Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People are weird.

Giving up is unforgivable.

I really should read my own blog.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Republicans do not trust women.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Let there be snark.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Everybody saw this coming.

Open Thread: Boston-Area Meetup Next Week?

Since it’s the season, commentor Lahke has proposed a meet-up for next Wednesday, July 17, at the Watch City Brewing Company in Waltham, around 7pm. I can attest to the excellence of their burgers (even the veggie version) and I hear the beer ain’t bad, either. Spousal Unit and I will be there; who else is in?

And apart from party planning, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

Well, well, to quote Black Dyanmite’s Daddy Bye…

    @CBSNews 2m
Elisabeth Hasselbeck leaving “The View” to join Fox http://cbsn.ws/16oNsSU

Apparently this is a surprise to The View, don’t know why, since it’s like a homecoming for Hasselbach anyway.

I never liked Hasselbach, she was just another dumb blonde spewing Faux News talking points. But what really cemented the dislike was during the ’08 campaign I believe, when Michelle Obama came on The View and was her usual warm and charming self, Hasselbach went on Fox the next day and completely bad-mouthed Michelle Obama right after smiling in her face the day before. From what I understand, she was made to make amends before Michelle O came back on the show, but I’ll never forget it.

Oh, and Gretchen Carlson is getting her own daytime talk show, because according to Roger Ailes (please hold your laughter)

@mikeallen: Ailes on Gretchen to daytime: “her strong interviewing skills make her a natural fit for daytime programming”

I want to share this sequence of photos from the Junior World Orienteering Championships, which just ended in the Czech Republic. It starts out with a simple picture of some of the American team, and turns into a flash mob as more and more kids from all over the world join in. Just kinda sweet.

Okay, we need a Western PA/Eastern Ohio/Northern WV meet up. I’ve agitated for years for a Pittsburgh meet up and can’t herd those cats. But if we expand it and go somewhere between Pittsburgh and Cleveland and/or Columbus and/or Morgantown (all within a couple hours drive of each other), maybe I’d get some bites. Like maybe Kay could decide to visit her daughter and be available. Maybe even Cole would decide to have an adventure close to home. Come on people! Let’s do this, dammit!

Last walk through tomorrow for our new house before taking the keys on Friday. There are a few things that need to be fixed, so we are stressed. Assuming things go well…..after we sign our lives away we will have done our party for the economy – so it will be up to the rest of y’all after that.

@lamh35: Who are they getting rid of to give Gretchen her own show?

I can’t stand Hasselbeck either. She’s a good fit for Fox.

@lamh35: That’s nothing more than a way for Sarah to fill up her PAC coffers. Donations have been slowing. She doesn’t want to do any work and being a Senator involves more work than occasionally showing up to read a speech off a teleprompter to a forced birth group. She’s not going to run.

@lamh35: Never watched The View, but I have vague memories of Hasselbeck giving Sarah Palin wardrobe advice or something during the ’08 campaign. In other words, I know her name, but not in a good way — but if she walked up to me right now and introduced herself, I wouldn’t know her. So I guess, since I’ve never seen her and I never watch F&F, it’s a good fit.

@Violet: I don’t know. I imagine they will just get rid of one of their “America Today” headline news-like segments and give it to Carlson

As for Hasselbach, Faux News is a perfect fit for her. But apparently, her last day is either this Friday or next, which is, I guess, more sudden than The View producers expected.

So now with Walters, Behar and Hasselbach leaving, it’ll be Whoopi, Sherri Shepard and 3 completely new people…unless they convince Behar to stay now that Hasselbach’s leaving? I suspect that Behar’s CURRENT Tv show won’t make the transition to the new Al Jazeera upgrade, so I wonder if Behar can be convinced to stay?

I honestly don’t care much, but I actually did watch The View early on, but once they hired that Hasselbish, I was done with it. I can’t imagine that I’ll watch it again once she leaves, but I do know that it’s been written that no one liked her and the viewers of the show really didnt like her

But yeah, she’s Blond, she’s good at spewing talking points from a card or telepromper and she dumb…perfect fit for Faux News

Was the second season where that kind of good looking guy ended up winning and went on to try to have a TV hosting career or something, but he sucked at it? Or maybe that was another season and he didn’t win. You can tell I’m not really a fan. LOL.

@Violet: I am a Survivor die hard. Love the show, for the psychological aspects of it. It’s mild torture, for our entertainment!

While I love the first season, its not even close to the best in my opinion since only one person knew how to play the game that season – Hatch. Everyone else was doing something else. The last episode was great, and there were certainly some great characters (the Hatch/Rudy friendship; Sue Hawk; Coconut phone guy).

The second season I think is the best, since everyone was playing hard, and it was the most brutal conditions of the show, ever.

And yes, Colby had a lock on the win, then got fooled/beguiled and essentially gave it up. He sucked on his return visit. He hosts the show “Topshot” now.

I used to write recaps for a reality tv blog many years ago. Although I always went for laughs and snarkiness, you can’t help but come to appreciate the show’s storytelling ability, the strategies the players use, and the social skills and psychology employed. It’s actually quite complex and certainly one of the least exploitive reality shows. The winner almost always deserves to win because he or she has almost always outwitted, outlasted and outplayed everyone else. There have been exceptions, but not many. I think it’s a fun social experiment.

The Whitey trial intrigues me because he was the most wanted man after Osama and for another reason, his connection Jai Alai. That part doesn’t seem to be covered though. There were only two FBI agents charged, one Connolly who was convicted and the other Rico who was charged but died before his trial. I’d like to know about Rico and why so many former agents protected Jai Alai…

Donor Gave Additional Money to McDonnell Corporation

A prominent political donor gave $70,000 to a corporation owned by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and his sister last year, and the governor did not disclose the money as a gift or loan, the Washington Post reports.

Jonnie Williams also gave a previously unknown $50,000 check to the governor’s wife, Maureen, in 2011.

The money brings to $145,000 the amount he gave to assist the McDonnell family in 2011 and 2012 — funds that are now at the center of federal and state investigations.

IMHO, what this is shaping up to be is another OJ trial just in reverse where all the news media is doing so much slanting in this case on the defense side, that if there is a conviction on the murder2 (which I don’t expect), then thanks to the MSM slanting, I fulling expect people who followed the news reports will be completely flabbergasted.

If Zimmerman is acquitte of murder2, but guilty of manslaughter, then it will be a good result in most people’s eyes, I suspect.

Gold Cup, US v. Belize. US lineup is a head-scratcher. 4-1-3-2, Orozco Fiscal and Goodson as center-backs, Diskerud favored over Stewie, Corona and Torres on the wings, Landycakes and Wondo up front.

Would have liked to meet up with you Anne. You are one of my most favorite “front pagers”. My family is from MA (Haverhill, Worcester, Boston and Newburyport). Irish immigrants. I lived as a little kid in Springfield but really grew up in Pittsburgh, (a great place to grow up in by the way) but we retain close ties to the Bay State and southern NH, which has changed drastically in my lifetime (mostly for the better). My work is largely international so my schedule makes a meet difficult. Hope to visit a friend in Rye Beach, NH in August, though.

Need sleep. Have a sf convention over the weekend, so won’t be able to recover much then. Alas, I will find it difficult to sleep as I have just read an advance copy of a novella by a Certain Scottish writer which involved unicorns meeting HP Lovecraft. “My Little Pony : Friendship is Magic” – where there’s a lot of little ponies, some magic, and no friendship at all – but an awful lot of reproductive activity…

Judging by the picture, the message probably ought to be “If you’re that scared of being accused of rape, don’t have sex with women who are too drunk to remember who you are in the morning.” Of course, for some of the targets of the poster, that probably amounts to an abstinence campaign.

There’s some sort of plug-in the kids managed to install on one of the computers that basically adds search links related to the webpage you are viewing. At some point I will need to clean it out of there but consider the list it just generated while I was reading a post at Sadly No!
