Ok, call me back when a Scotsman manages to beat a blancmange.

The Newsmax headline box on the front page says that “Florida prepares for riots after Trayvon verdict.” I could have sworn the defendant’s name in that case was Zimmerman.

I love people who are very, very patient.
@Big R: Martin stole bullets from Zimmerman’s gun!1

English sporting triumphs are few and far between. They must forever suffer the humiliation of being eclipsed by other nations in sports they themselves invented — football, rugby, cricket, even — no, especially — tennis. Let’s not begrudge them a rare victory celebration, the poor dears.
Besides, producing a Lego animation of a tennis match takes an admirable amount of dedication, no?
Roger Moore
@Big R:
Yeah, and the defendant in the Rodney King trial wasn’t Rodney King. Doesn’t keep people from calling it that.
PeakVT
@Big R: I’m almost tempted to click on the “Dershowitz: Find Zimmerman ‘Not Guilty’” so I can renew my contempt for the guy. But I won’t.

I’m reading Ruta Sepetys’ BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY, which is about the Soviet deportation of Lithuanians in 1941. It’s YA and very grim and very well done. It has a totally kickass first line: “They took me in my nightgown.”
But it was first published in 2011, and I wonder if Sepetys has since flinched over the “Shades of Gray” title. Apparently people sometimes show up for her readings expecting E. L. James.
Amir Khalid
@Big R:
Don’t you get it? To them, Zimmerman is not on trial for murder; Trayvon is on trial for being black.

Well, budget vote went through and I am official out of this job and relegated to a clerical job for about 11 months. Same hours and pay, but I lose access to the cameras, the software and any creative work that made the poverty, demeaning loss of home, family and a future a bit more bearable. And then my pound of flesh investment camera broke last month, so there goes that. Slept about 4.5 hours after last night’s 4-12:30 am work and just wandered right back into work. Having a hard time concentrating on this last video piece, though. I’d like to have a serious temper tantrum or something. Epic meltdown, what have you, but inside I just feel like death with a human husk tossed about my shoulders. There has got to be some shred of creative insight I can bring to this short so I can close the books on this. I have about a week to wrap up all projects, turn them and my equipment over, then I vacation so I can clear out my storage unit then report to the mailroom. And hopefully, cut my throat over a copy machine.

@PeakVT:
Dershowitz has destroyed his legacy pretty much the way Ralph Nader has. He’s irredeemable scum now, especially after his whole-hearted embrace of the “ticking time bomb” scenario as a justification for torture. He marked himself as a sack of shit who would have no real problems with working for Reinhard Heydrich.

Classic, darn that George W Bush regulation all to heck. Is this binding in any way, or the equivalent of eleventy-seven votes to killz Obummercare?
By this yardstick, our cars would lack seatbelts, even lap belts, fuel injection, crumple zones, collapsing steering columns, catalytic converters, safety glass, side impact beams, air bags, reversing lights, rear view mirrors…heck even the pedal order “You can’t make us stop putting the throttle on the steering column–we’ve ALWAYS put it there and our customers would get confused!”

This is the first time I’ve seen a Lego tennis match re-creation, but for some years now the Guardian has been devotedly presenting Lego football (soccer) matches. Google “Lego soccer world cup 2010” for hours of um, entertainment.
Here’s a recreation of Germany’s 4-1 thrashing of England that year:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/video/2010/jun/29/world-cup-2010-germany-england-brick-by-brick
And here’s the “brick-by-brick” of Bayern Munich’s 2013 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/video/2013/may/27/champions-league-bayern-brick-by-brick-fussball-video
(my apologies if these Youtube clips begin with ads)
Also too, I always thought that people “with too much time on their hands” commented on blogs. for example….

@PeakVT: I’m sure you can renew your contempt without subjecting yourself to that!
I know I can!

That’s “real tennis” as opposed to “lawn tennis” which is the basis of the current game that is televised and played at obscure places like Melbourne Park, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon, and Forest Hills.

No matter how many barbaric procedures they put me through, they still cannot tell me if I have cancer or not.
Which is, I suppose, much better than having cancer so advanced that there is no question about it.
Still, this time I have to wait 6 months before I learn anything more. Ugh.
I’m a huge tennis fan, but I’ve missed the end of last season and all of this season so far. By the time I get back to it, I wonder if I’ll recognize the men’s draw anymore.

Maybe so, but they did get last year’s Tour de France, which is the only sporting event that really matters. Shouldn’t that hold them for a while?

I’m always impressed with these stop motion folks. It takes so much patience and sensitivity. So maybe it is too much time on their hands but isn’t it a fun way to spend it?
And this news sucks, but remember, outsourcing saves money in pension and health benefits, even when it costs 2x the amount of salary, pension and health benefits. Local Republicans? No. Our local Democrats. I couldn’t muster the will to support the party’s funding efforts this year. Wonder why.
@Gex: Sorry, Gex. I hate advice like this, but, you know what to do. Distract yourself, take a breath and wait it out.
I was gonna watch tennis, but it’s been too hectic and I decided I could watch balls be knocked around any time on the internet.

@Villago Delenda Est: @raven: see, e.g., this.

You are aware, I know, that lawn tennis, not real tennis, is what they play at Wimbledon and elsewhere. Not a lot of people play real tennis anymore since it was supplanted by lawn tennis in the late 19th century.

Why I’ve completely stopped watching local teevee news, summarized in a single example.
From our “Fox 40” totally epic news team’s newsy news website.
Web headline: Huge Marijuana Grow Uncovered Deep in the Cosumnes River Preserve
Video title: Huge Marijuana Bust Carried out Near Elk Grove
Accompanying text: “After two months of planning, the team enters the site tucked deep in the Cosumnes River Preserve. They find a small grow of no more than 500 plants, but it’s enough to cause serious damage to natural resources….The job now is sifting through the evidence to see if they can find a link to any suspects.”
Somewhere in their lengthy journalistic mission, the epic Fox 40 news team took a “small grow” uncovered by cops but with no arrests and transformed it into a “Huge Marijuana Bust.” But that’s not the clincher for me, the article’s first sentence is.
So much fail in one sentence.

The wingnuts in the NC legislature are on the verge of passing legislation forcing anyone on public assistance to take and pass a drug test. As we’ve seen in other states, the administration of the program will likely cost more than any money saved from rejecting assistance.
The Republican party plays no constructive role in this country.

@The Other Chuck: There is a new ad on the site today that is really full of shit. They offer free samples, and show pics of Tide etc. It turns out to be a survey of 100s of health problems, and being signed up for their newsletters. Each page of 20 more diseases says “just one more step!” at the bottom. Not so, I suppose they are counting all 17 pages as one step. They want to send you medicare scooters etc. It was tough getting to the point of asking for the samples, and they don’t tell you in advance which these might be. When I finally made it to the samples page, 3 of the 5 links brought me to a 404 not found message. None of the items shown on the first page were there. I assume I will be spending the rest of the week unsubscribing to things I didn’t want, and only clicked because they force you to in order to go on and see the samples.
This ad is worse than Newsmax, which at least brings you to the thing you clicked.

@Hill Dweller: Hate to say it, but the Dems have been just as bad on the drug-testing front as the GOP.
The news turds yesterday were losing their shit over the Asiana pilots not being drug tested. The gruesome truth that they’ll never say: no other citizenry in the world submits to drug testing like we do. It would be considered unthinkably crass to ask and inconceivably servile to consent to such a thing.

@IowaOldLady: Jasper Fforde – author of “Shades of Grey (2009)” – finds it hilarious and says he has gotten a very, very, very, very slight boost in sales from the confusion. He also reports that librarians and bookstore clerks take great and unholy glee in giving his book to hapless patrons who ask for “Shades of Grey” even when said librarian or clerk is 99.999% certain the patron wants “50 Shades …”

Has anyone else been reading Sully’s threads on putting down their dogs? God I’m crying. Don’t get me wrong, they have been really good threads (it’s a continuing thing for now) but it brings emotions to the front that I haven’t been able to hold back. That and we had to do it to our 17 yo child last year. The actual experience? It wasn’t as bad as I had feared and I do feel better about being there with her when it was going down. It made us all feel more comfortable. Didn’t stop me from crying like a baby once I left the office though. I waited till we were walking out. I didn’t want my last time with Wiley to be tainted by my emotions. I wanted them to be easy. I wanted her to be at peace. She was. I was not.
