Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People are complicated. Love is not.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

The words do not have to be perfect.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Let there be snark.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

This fight is for everything.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

“But what about the lurkers?”

If anyone in Seattle is considering this:

So I’m coming to Seattle for business in a couple weeks (July 29-Aug 2), and I was hoping to get some help from a local. Is there anywhere I could score a small amount of bud for my brief stay. I don’t want to give ripped off by some junky on the street so I thought I’d ask here. Thanks! Jake

    Answer:

selling marijuana is still technically illegal in Washington State, until the state licenses growers and retail outlets this December.

I’m kind of bummed that Yutsano/Yatsuno is organising a Balloon Juice meet-up, on my birthday of all days, and didn’t invite me. Yes, I know it’s in a bar, and Seattle’s out of my way, and I don’t drink and besides it’s Ramadan, but still … Pout.

A couple of interesting-sounding upcoming movies:

HBO documentary — The Battle of AmFAR, about Mathilde Krim and Elizabeth Taylor teaming up to fund the early research into AIDS

Fruitvale Station — a docudrama about the death of Oscar Grant, who was shot in the back by a San Francisco transit officer. It’s getting HUGE buzz on the indie circuit, including Oscar talk about former The Wire star Michael B. Jordan, who plays Grant.

Not to keep on beating the Sharknado drum, but found this a little bit interesting.

Today, Syfy averages 24 movies a year, each with around a $1.5 million budget….
    [snip]
“The phrase we use internally is ‘ridiculously entertaining,’” says [exec. v.p.] Vitale. “We have fun brainstorming sessions, I can tell you that.” In those sessions, Syfy movies are usually conceived title first, plot second.…
    [snip]
So who watches Syfy’s movies? Older dudes, mostly. According to TV research firm Horizon Media, viewers of Syfy original movies have an average age of 52. […] According to the Los Angeles Times, Sharknado was watched by only 1 million people, which makes it a bust, even by Syfy standards. Most Syfy originals have an average viewership of 1.5 million people, with some getting twice that.
    [snip]
…in August, Syfy will debut a new film, Ghost Shark, about—well, you can probably guess. Source
