Fruitvale Station looks like an amazing movie. I won’t be able to see it in theaters, but here is the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ceVVVils8z4
Also, it’s the summer Steam sale, if any of you who play video games haven’t had all of your money extracted by Steam just yet.

Anita O’Day. It’s her pig latin stage name, get it?
“Born Anita Belle Colton, O’Day was admired for her sense of rhythm and dynamics, and her early big band appearances shattered the traditional image of the “girl singer”. Refusing to pander to any female stereotype, O’Day presented herself as a “hip” jazz musician, wearing a band jacket and skirt as opposed to an evening gown. She changed her surname from Colton to O’Day, pig Latin for “dough,” slang for money.[1]”

IMO, through the decades of the “golden age” of jazz, scat/vocalese are really the only areas in which women were equal to or arguably superior to men.

@esc:
As with other sales, it only benefits me if there is something which I would like to own available. I’ve already got all the Civ V updates and prefer the Xbox for my shooters so probably won’t get anything. But if I check it out & do get another time waster can I blame you when my wife gets mad at me?

The first five minutes of Jazz on a Summer’s Day, with Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Berkmeyer and co, are maybe the greatest mixture of picture and sound ever.
You think it’s some special film score music under the opening sequence, until the picture cuts to the musicians onstage, playing the music live, and the moment is just sublime.
Everyone here needs to roll that Youtube clip back to the beginning and just watch until the first musical number is ended. Between that and Thelonious Monk (plus the Anita O’Day), it’s all maybe the best music video on the Internet.
different-church-lady
Yeah, mindblowing. Supposedly she was high as a kite during that performance.
Seanly
Speaking of jazz, is the Ken Burns documentary on it any good? Wife had me add that to our Netflix Instant queue, but we haven’t watched it yet.
I’m an oddball who hates the sax-heavy extemperaneous stuff but loves fusion jazz.

@raven:
She was also high as a kite.
I wonder what that era might have been musically if the greatest musicians hadn’t been decimated by heroin use.
cleek
love love love that movie.
bought myself a lot of Anita O”Day records after seeing it, too.

@Seanly:
Like all of Burns’ big works, he puts a sharp focus on a handful of important figures while breezing by others of note. All-in-all it’s very good for anyone but completists.
cleek
@PopeRatzo:
in Anita’s case, luckily not much different. she got clean and lived a long time.
cleek
@Seanly:
it’s good. definitely. tons of great footage and history. but, it’s clear that he (and co-producer Wynton Marsalis) thinks that everything in jazz revolves around Armstrong and Ellington.
esc
@Seanly: Sure. I warn you though: it’s amazing what you discover you’d like to own when that thing is less than $5.

Then do I have an essay for you!

Hubby and I want a dog. A small-ish adult poodle mix, or some other type of fur that won’t send me to an emergency room wheezing hysterically. Looked at Georgia Poodle Rescue, and they won’t adopt if you don’t have recent experience with poodles; the Carolina Poodle Rescue FAQ strongly implies that they won’t adopt to you if you have a full-time job. WTF? (And would hiring a dog-walker help?)
We’d probably want to bring home this pup, whomever he/she may be, in September. But I’m not sure we’re giving ourselves enough time to find a group who’ll adopt to an exurban/rural homeowning, responsible, childless, animal-loving adult couple who can afford a groomer, dog walker and pet health insurance. (Our property has no fence, BTW, so we definitely suck.)
Okay, maybe I should actually apply and get turned down before I get discouraged. But I don’t like the looks of the info on these websites. Does anyone know a group that’ll adopt a small-to-medium sized adult hypoallergenic dog to scum of the earth like us?
Mnemosyne
@Karen in GA:
Don’t have any specific advice since I’m on the opposite side of the country, but I would start looking at Petfinder.com and see if there are dogs available from smaller (and not so picky) local rescue orgs.
One of my friends at work was trying for years to adopt a rescue pug but kept getting turned down because he’s a smoker, so I know what you mean about certain types of Rescue People.
raven
@Karen in GA: Get a cocker, they are real dogs.
Karen in GA
@Mnemosyne: Thanks. Petfinder.com’s been my go-to site the entire time hubby and I have been talking about this. I think we may have one or two possibilities as far as smaller groups, but given that they’re smaller, they don’t have much in the way of what we’re looking for. And I like the Georgia and Carolina groups just because they seem to know the dogs pretty well, so we can get a good idea of which would be right for us.
We’re going to try Carolina anyway, only because a Google search late last night spat out one message board post by someone from two or three years ago that said, in essence, that this group isn’t staffed by crazy people, and the “wrong” answers on the application are just a springboard for discussion rather than an excuse for instant rejection. (The Georgia group, OTOH, looks like it would be a complete waste of time.)

@raven: Last time I tried to live with a non-hypoallergenic* dog, I ended up in a real emergency room with a real inability to breathe.
*For want of a more accurate term.

@Karen in GA:
Go to the pound. There are lots of lovable mutts (and probably some purebreds there also). They won’t be so high-faluting about whether you have a job or the proper airs.
Not to say the organizations for various purebreds don’t do a lot of great work, just that there are lots of animals who need a forever home.

@Karen in GA: If you can’t find a poodle, the bichon frise has a similar coat (and a nice temperament).
WereBear
If you have seen the latest “smear tactic” against cats, I have a post up:
Why I am not afraid of cat poop
As always, it’s bad science.
Mnemosyne
@WereBear:
Heh. Yesterday, some of my co-workers were talking about being grossed out that their cats would dig in the litter box and then put their “poopy paws” on human faces, but I’m pretty sure that’s not what the article is talking about.
Karen in GA
@esc: I love bichons! My sisters have had them, which is why I know I can tolerate the coats. They have a reputation for being difficult to housebreak, though — that’s why I was looking for a pup more poodley.
WereBear
@Karen in GA: If you can handle a poodle mix, can you handle a bichon or any number of wire-hair types?
I’d start emailing everyone you are willing to drive to. What is the local shelter situation like?
I know it sounds woo-woo, but there’s an energy in these situations. If you start sending in applications, making yourself known to the local rescue people, and be sweet and stubborn as needed, exactly the right dog has been known to pop up as a result.
Death Panel Truck
@cleek: Marsalis pretty much despised Miles Davis, so that why there’s not much of him in Jazz. He and Stanley Crouch said that Filles De Kilimanjaro was Davis’ last “important” album. In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew are both masterpieces, IMHO, but the former was too electric, and the latter full-blown fusion, so they don’t count.
WereBear
@Mnemosyne: Have they seen what dogs do with their tongues?
My cats’ paws are as clean as the litter box allows, ya know :) And I have no problem letting them put their paws on my faces.
PurpleGirl
I’ve been looking into adopting an adult cat from a shelter. They ask the same type of questions, so I’m not sure I could adopt an animal. I’ve not owned a pet myself but friends had a small manegerie, which I watched and took care of when my friends went on vacation or business trips. (They had a cat, a Dobermann pinscher, 3-4 retired racing greyhounds, 2 parrots, 3 ferrets and a varying number of gerbils.)
What I’ve decided to do is to volunteer at a shelter and build-up some credibility that way.
WereBear
@PurpleGirl: An excellent plan!
I deplore the too-fussy demands of some groups; just as bad as the screw-you-we’ll-just-kill-them attitudes of many municipalities.
It not only establishes your bona-fides; it lets you observe the field. Good luck!
Mnemosyne
@WereBear:
I tried to point out that the cats lick their paws clean after the litter box, but I started laughing halfway through and ruined it.
These are people who are germaphobes in general, so it’s not that they think cats are specifically gross. They just think about GERMS EVERYWHERE a little too much, including their pets.
Mnemosyne
@PurpleGirl:
Like Karen in GA said, sometimes they ask the questions to make sure you’ve thought about the issues they’re bringing up and don’t actually want a specific answer, but you can usually figure that out by talking to the rescue org. I remember sending an application to one no-kill shelter that never responded, so I wrote them off as a possibility. :-p
scuffletuffle
@Karen in GA: Try smilingdogfarms.org. They are in Texas and have upward of 400 dogs.

Talk about hijacking a thread!….”enough of this boring Jazz crap, let’s talk about our dogs.”
Anita O’Day was great.
