Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

In my day, never was longer.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

The words do not have to be perfect.

No one could have predicted…

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

A dilettante blog from the great progressive state of West Virginia.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Bark louder, little dog.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Some people have reported malware warnings in my Fifty shades thread. Are you getting that? Due to iPad blogging from the road I can not check much of anything. Also no categories for my posts, because a check button is apparently too complicated for WordPress and iOS to work out between themselves.

Also, here is a pic of a spider that I took a few weeks ago. Panasonic GH2 with an OM 50mm/1.8 on macro tubes, a LED ring light and a radio-slaved manual flash with a diffuser in my left hand. 1/160 s. at f/11.

It’s a Chrome and Firefox thing, not an AV thing. Anything not running the google stopbadware.org blacklist isn’t going to see it. A site owner can get a more detailed report that includes the specific URLs identified with malware and determine whether it’s an ad and which one.

Sudden thought O/T about computer talk, but………

If Zimmerman was unarmed he would never have pursued TM, despite admonitions from trained 911/311 staff to stand down.

Zimmerman is an inadequate man who needs a gun to feel something more about himself than he is, ever has been, or will ever be.

Crap, can’t edit. In short, the Google spiders hit a malware-laden ad while crawling the site today and has put the entire /2013/ directory on the malware list. The site owner will have to request a recrawl after tracking down which ad and arranging to block either that ad or the ad provider.

More importantly that is a sweet shot Tim!

Also, thanks for posting the shooting info…as one of the photobugs here, I really appreciate it. I’ve never been much of a macro shooter, but I can definitely appreciate an incredible shot. I guess that ring flash is a must to really make macro photos pop.

As I continue my photography learning experience, a little over a year in, I’ve finally outgrown the two lenses that came with my DSLR, and my first Canon L-series lens (24-105 f/4) is due to arrive tomorrow…I can’t tell you how excited I am.

I signed on for the Banfield Pet Hospital wellness plan for both the puppy (Flossie) and the new adoptee (Skeeter), the puppy plan includes spay/neuter surgery as well as all shots and unlimited vet visits. Because Skeeter was already one year old they let me sign him up for a modified adult plan which includes his neuter surgery and all shots and unlimited vet visits. Flossies plan is $33.00 a month, Skeeter’s is $29.00 a month with a small supplement for the surgery. I am quite happy to pay the money after my memory of Judy being bitten by a copperhead one weekend which required a costly $500 trip to the emergency vet and when we got back home to find out that Lucky had been bitten by the same damn copperhead which required another $500.00 trip to the emergency vet which meant I couldn’t pay any of my bills that month and put us in a world of hurt. Banfield is open seven days a week so there is no need to go to the vet equivalent of the ER. I can absorb $60.00 a month into my budget quite easily, $1,000 in one fell swoop will kill me financially.

Some quick mental math has me guessing at 5-6 thousand over a lifetime – if that includes shots, neutering, wellness and dental, it can be a good deal.

Still may want to breed the tyke.

I’ll call the vet tomorrow – the insurance brochure was missing from his “new puppy packet” when I took him in for boosters today; I’ll ask which one he works with most frequently.

I’ve been trying to like it but for me, on a crop sensor camera it just occupies that space where I find it’s either not wide enough, or not long enough for what I may be trying to shoot.

But it is fast and sharp, that’s for sure. I wish I could use it more. Probably speaks more to me not being creative in using it though. For a prime, I think I would be happier with either a 35mm or a 85mm.

Holder: After Trayvon’s Death, I Talked With My Teen Son About The ‘World He Must Confront’

PERRY STEIN 5:17 PM EDT, TUESDAY JULY 16, 2013

Eric Holder, the country’s first African-American attorney general, talked about the killing of Trayvon Martin in personal terms Tuesday, telling an audience at the NAACP 2013 Convention how the shooting prompted him to have a conservation with his 15-year-old son about race.

“Trayvon’s death last spring caused me to sit down to have a conversation with my own 15-year-old son, like my dad did with me. This was a father-son tradition I hoped would not need to be handed down,” Holder said. “But as a father who loves his son and who is more knowing in the ways of the world, I had to do this to protect my boy. I am his father and it is my responsibility, not to burden him with the baggage of eras long gone, but to make him aware of the world he must still confront. This is a sad reality in a nation that is changing for the better in so many ways.”

Holder also said the death of Trayvon Martin reminded him of experiences he had as a young man of being pulled over and having his car searched twice on the New Jersey Turnpike for no apparent reason. More recently, when he was a federal prosecutor, he was stopped by a police officer while going to a movie at night in Georgetown in D.C

    @Botsplainer:

For me the most important thing is that Banfield is open 7 days a week, most vets are not, and no matter what insurance plan you have if you can’t access your vet 7 days a week it is going to cost you a fortune for the ER vet care.

BJ commenters, perhaps you can help me. A long-ass time ago, there was a little kerfuffle with right-wingers trying to make hay about poor black people having Xboxes, sort of the new T-Bone Steaks and Welfare Cadillacs. Can anybody point me in the direction of posts on the subject?

I’m back. We landed the copter on Spencer Glacier and drank purer water than any of that crap that gets sold in bottles.

Life is good. We got back and have been pounding beers ever since.
