What if voters just don’t care about this shit at all?

Gossip website TheDirty.com claims to have acquired more sexually explicit online chats between Anthony Weiner and a young woman — chats that the site claims took place after Weiner resigned from Congress in disgrace in 2011. The site claims Weiner used the laughable name “Carlos Danger” in some of his messages and sent sexually-charged messages as late as last summer.

Perhaps the dude has problems. Probably you have to have problems to want to be mayor of New York.

If Sanford, Weiner, and Spitzer are all elected, maybe the political press will stop being the sexytime police. Maybe.

Yeah, not counting on that any more than counting on “sexytime” not being used in any story like this, no matter how far beyond old it gets.

(especially since I’m not gonna click and look): is there any evidence they’re correct when they claim it’s Weiner? After all, if I were going to trawl secksytime chat sites in 2011, I might be inclined to troll them at the same time, posing as Weiner, for the lulz as they say. I got no love for the guy, at all, but he’d have to be dumb as dirt to have done this. Though I suppose the evidence points to him actually being that stupid …

Are you kidding? Nothing sells newspapers like a sober conservative pundit talking about politicians doin’ it. I’d say newspapers would start devoting an entire insert to political sexting, but that would imply they weren’t going to stick everything on the front page.

Anthony Weiner like a true sex predator promised the young woman many things like a job at Politico and a condo in Chicago (a place they could meet up and have sex). The best part was Anthony used an alias this time thinking this would protect him.”

Politico? Is that what Politico is, a washington whore house where powerful people can stash their mistresses and rent-boys? No wonder they suck (no pun intended).

@Warren Terra: Addiction trumps intelligence. He may or may not be stupid, but if he is still sexting, he needs to seek help. Whether it’s “sex” addiction or just addiction to risky situations, the need for the next “high” overrides all common sense. And he will eventually take himself down all the way. Sadly, his family may go down with him and he could also do more damage to the party.

Also, if I had a progressive alternative to vote for and I lived in NYC, I would not ignore what is either blatant stupidity, incredible self-deception, or rampant egotism that would let Weiner think that after getting into trouble for this already, he could go back and do it again and not get caught.

@VividBlueDotty: Agreed. This is where it actually matters from a public standpoint. I don’t care that Obama used cocaine in his younger years. But I wouldn’t want him to be POTUS if he was currently addicted to cocaine. Who would?

Weiner appears to be actively suffering from an addiction, and if that’s right, he needs to get treatment before he runs for public office.

OK. Does this disqualify him for office? No. But if this is true and it occurred after the scandal derailed his career, then no, voters should look at other candidates. The press is NOT going to stop flogging sexy time stories, we are not going to stop reading about them, and since Hair Weener is not going to stop philandering, voters are going to have to put up with stories of how naughty the mayor is, rather than how great New York is doing.

    @VividBlueDotty:
I can sympathize (though thankfully not empathize) with the travails of an addict, but if he did this as recently as a year ago (as it now appears he did), a year after his fall from public life, it’s clear that his addiction has a greater power over him than does his desire to be a useful public servant. I can feel sorry for his difficulties, but I cannot forgive the arrogance and the selfishness that caused him to attempt to again seek public office without having put this more fully behind him.

Weiner obviously likes risk and danger. Have you read the texts? That he would risk those going public is astonishing to me. @Senyordave: New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner acknowledged Tuesday the existence of online messages between him and a woman not his wife that were sent after he resigned from Congress in 2011 for a similar sexting scandal.

“I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have,” Weiner said in a statement put out by his campaign. “These things that I did were wrong and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from Congress.”

If we’re going to delve into this again, a scandal involving on-line identities, I really want to know who was behind the phantom identities in the last scandal, the teenage girls who turned out not to exist, and the guy who re-tweeted the original pic and then disappeared off the face of the earth.

This isn’t about Weiner’s suitability as mayor, or what you think about sex addiction; I want to know what’s going on here.

“Fake Identities Were Used on Twitter in Effort to Get Information on Weiner” by Jennifer Preston:

At least three months before the revelation that former Representative Anthony D. Weiner was sending lewd messages and photos to women online, a small group of self-described conservatives was monitoring his exchanges with women on Twitter. Now there is evidence that one or more people created two false identities on Twitter in order to collect information to use against him.

A Twitter user employing a fake name posed as a 16-year-old California high school girl in May and tried to get Mr. Weiner to be her prom date, according to people with knowledge of the communications and a review of documents. The person behind another Twitter account created under a fake name claimed to be her classmate and offered to provide the group with incriminating evidence about Mr. Weiner.

One Twitter user the group observed seeking to interact with Mr. Weiner was called “Nikki Reid.” She started an online campaign to get Mr. Weiner to be her prom date at Hollywood High School in May, using the account @starchild111. Within days after Mr. Weiner started following her, a Twitter user, also using a fake name, Marianela Alicea, and pretending to be Nikki Reid’s classmate, contacted a member of the #bornfreecrew and said she had information about Mr. Weiner, but never provided any.

But there is no evidence that either girl exists. There is no Nikki Reid or Marianela Alicea enrolled at Hollywood High School. In response to requests from a reporter from the blog Mediaite, a woman claiming to be Nikki Reid’s mother provided documentation to substantiate her identity and her daughter’s identity. But records show the street address the woman provided does not list anyone named Reid as an occupant. State officials in California have confirmed that the driver’s license this woman provided to Mediaite was false, as well.

From “Andrew Breitbart: Psychosis in a Political Mask Part Two”:

The outlines of the story are very simple. Anthony Weiner, the congressman from New York, spoke to a number of women on twitter, one of whom, college student Genette Cordova, he tweeted a private picture of himself. Before he was able to delete this same picture, it was re-tweeted by a twitter user named Dan Wolfe @PatriotUSA76. It was this tweet which would unleash the rest of the scandal, with several women coming forward to say that they had exchanged texts with the congressman that were sometimes intimate and sexual. One woman, Megan Broussard, would reveal that she and the congressman had exchanged photos as well. A painstakingly detailed timeline of the events leading up to this, including many mysterious events discussed here, is by Greg Beato at his website soundbitten. Beato is a libertarian, and doesn’t like Weiner very much, but his work appears diligent and trustworthy, his first impulse to record what took place, rather than what he wishes took place.

Dan Wolfe, whose twitter profile had the description, “Conservative Reagan Republican. No Obamacare, socialism, sharia. Proud of the USA & Proud to be an American with NO apologies. No elitists need apply.”, and an avatar of Ronald Reagan, would soon disappear entirely, the focus shifting entirely to one of his on-line friends, the twitter user @goatsred. @goatsred was the handle of a man named Mike Stack, and it was @goatsred who first tweeted about the possibility of a sex scandal involving the congressman. However, Stack insisted that he had first heard of the possibility of such a scandal through @PatriotUSA76. Though it is believed that everyone dearly wishes to be famous, Dan Wolfe / @PatriotUSA76 shared none of this lust. He made no attempt to contact Andrew Breitbart by phone, though Breitbart wished to speak to him and give him the same publicity that James O’Keefe got from the ACORN scandal. Two emails from Wolfe / @PatriotUSA76 to Andrew Breitbart make his feelings clear: he is worried about an ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend with mental problems, and is worried what will take place if he appears publicly. On June 2nd, Breitbart would tweet “Lookin’ for some clarifying data from @patriotusa76. Call me. I’m listed.” There would be no reply.

Well, since he’s a pure progressive who regularly bashes the most liberal president in our lifetimes, President Obama, I think us white folks should stand by our Weiner-man. Never mind the fact that he seems to be a pathological liar to his various mistresses and wife who was home with their infant child while he was out trying to buy condos for his mistresses and getting them jobs at Politico.

That’s it, maybe President Obama should start having affairs and lying about them, then make sure Michelle stands by him even after that, and THEN he’ll finally get support from the white privilege progressives. Seems to have worked for the Clintons and Wieners. I suspect though that President Obama will continue improving the lives of millions around the world, especially those in extreme poverty, and re-building America’s middle class, and leading by example in his personal life and on and on, instead of following the Clinton/Weiner paths, so he’ll just have to keep doing without support from white privilege and online progressives. Yes, but the issue here is that people are assuming these are current texts – and that Weiner therefore has an ongoing problem. My point is that the date stamps were removed for a reason. The likeliest reason, IMHO, being that the texts reflect old behavior (still foolish and inexcusable relative to his wife) – but not current behavior (which would disqualify him in the eyes of some people as a candidate for office). In other words, Weiner might have actually worked on and dealt with his problems and be getting hammered now for old behavior.

You miss the significance of the date stamps. Weiner isn’t saying he is being framed – he’s saying that these are old messages – whereas the people presenting them to the grateful world are trying to make them look current. Why else would the date stamps be missing? It’s possible that Weiner did deal with his problems and has now learned to behave himself – but the people presenting these texts as current obviously don’t want that to be a possible interpretation.

If Sanford, Weiner, and Spitzer are all elected, maybe the political press will stop being the sexytime police. Maybe.

Oh, come on. Are you asking the press to stop doing its job? This is important stuff here, the stuff of scandals. It isn’t like it’s a case of some elected official being a racist or lying the country into a needless war or trashing the world’s economy or willfully screwing the country for cheap, short term political gain; this is serious. All those things I listed above may or may not be all that big a deal; opinions vary on that. And even if they are big deals, it’s too hard to prove, and it deals with shit like reading numbers or calling racist Republicans out for their racism. And, really, those things never really hurt anybody, unlike sex scandals. Have you forgotten how hurt and angry all the Washington press people were when President Clinton lied about getting a blowjob? Those people were hurt, hurt badly. And those people are important. They tell us as much every day. I just don’t believe you understand how jounalism works. No wonder you’re just a vituperating, foul mouthed blogger.

I think that’s exactly the point of the missing time stamps. If, as I suspect, these are old texts, it looks tacky, but it’s not the same thing as Weiner carrying on his online games in the present day. I think voters wouldn’t care so much if the messages are old ones from the time of Weinergate.

    Tom Q

    July 23, 2013 at 5:08 pm

Thinking strictly of the politics here: if this is coming from another of the candidates, it’s proably not Quinn. Quinn is likely to make the runoff regardless, thanks to all her institutional support. Because her candidacy has such half-hearted support in the general electorate, her worst fear would be to have an acceptable alternative around whom all not-Quinn voters can rally in the second round. Which is to say, she wouldn’t have wanted this stuff to come out till AFTER the first balloting, when it would likely be between her and Weiner, and this could make him unacceptable, allowing her to default her way to the nomination (and, almost certainly, election).

If anyone has motive to release it now, it’s one of the other not-Quinns, who could hope to be at worst the second place finisher, and get his shot at coalescing the somebody-else vote.

Of course this website is one of the few that lost a lawsuit ins spite of the CDA. Of course that suit was as notable for the plaintiff’s table as anything. Multiple license suspensions for counsel for Rule 11 type stuff, and the plaintiff herself is engaged to her former high school student. She plead, in a deal that kept her out of jail and off the sex offender rolls, to the charges that their relationship was illegal because of the teacher/minor aspect.

It takes slime to lose a defamation action in that situation.

It’s a mistake to lump Sanford, Spitzer and Weiner together. The first two actually seem like men who have somewhat sincere desires to public service (although in the case of Sanford, his notion of “public service” is pretty messed up). But Weiner strikes me as a huge ego who craves nothing more than attention. Even when he was saying stuff that made other liberals stand up and cheer, he always had the stink of smarm about him. Sanford I can understand, falling in love and making bad decisions because of it. Spitzer I can understand, driven by the combination of power, money and lust. But Weiner’s sexting is just onanistic play-acting. Looking for attention in ways that would make most adolescents turn away in disgust. Sexting. Man, what can be more lame? And for what? He’s sucking all the air out of the mayoral race for what? You think he’s got some plan for the city of New York beyond having his picture in the paper every morning and being the big shot? You think he cares one bit about anyone else who lives in New York?

Honest to christ I hope he drops out of the race and never shows his face in public again. It’s not just his own bed he fouled, but also those of a lot of people who really do care what happens to New York City. He’s Rahm Emmanuel except without all the charm and good will. I hate these machine Democrats, I really do.
