Chew on this for a while.

Why? Maybe it’ll give birth to a cute little Raspberry Pi server!

Who is the father? Should we congratulate you or John or was it Steve before he was “fixed”?

It’s humid in NYC and sorta hot. Of course, the server doesn’t feel well.
Betty Cracker
@raven: I’ve only seen snippets of Honey Boo-Boo (length of viewing confined to the time it took me to find the remote and change channels), but is it accurate to describe them as poor? I get the larger point the author is attempting to make, but I’m not sure the examples he cites support the cause.

If it is pregnant then I want to know who was fucking around with it!

There are many Planned Parenthood adorable baby killing centers still open that you can drive the server to in order to D&C the little bugger. You just have to get by the protestors….

Honey Boo Boo is just the reality television way of making fun of poor people while saving money and not creating a scripted television show.

The more stuff I read written by Rajan, the more he sounds like an intellectual love child
of MoU and Bobo. Centrist globalization fluff combined with conservative market dogma. He is getting extremely good press from the Indian media with no questions asked whether it is OK for a non-citizen to be installed in such an important policy position. They are treating him like the second coming of Jesus. His initial prediction of the credit crisis not withstanding he is thoroughly an apologist for the Banking Borg. You shall be assimilated, resistance is futile.

I used to work for a big corporation. I really liked the people I worked with. Trouble is, since it was a corporation, I was horribly underpaid and they cut benefits every 10 minutes. So a few months ago I found a new job with smaller group (not a corporation), paying a lot more money — the high-deductible bullshit “health insurance” still sucks, but the higher pay takes the edge off. And on this salary I might even be able to retire one day.
Trouble is, I hate, hate, HATE it. Long hours and long commute (which I thought I would be okay with), the work’s not remotely challenging (which is surprising), and I won’t even get into the personality disorders of the person running the place.
How do you start job hunting again when you’ve only been at a new job for five months? I’m thinking you don’t, and I’m stuck here for at least a couple of years.
Going back to the old place isn’t an option — I left because I couldn’t afford to keep working there.
Ugh. Don’t mind me. I’m just kicking myself and completely miserable.
(But at least I’m not pregnant. Speaking of which, when’s Limbaugh going to go off on a three day rant about that slut of a server?)

@piratedan: I think the same is true of Roc, which at least the way I remember it was essentially “Black Honeymooners.” It didn’t mock poor people, it depicted them with sympathy. Was Sanford and Son mocking in tone?

Herewith, in response to the possibly pregnant server, the currently “Most Viewed” article on the Guardian website:
“10 Rules for Managing Your Penis”
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/aug/07/10-rules-managing-penis-sexting-wine-toaster
Helpful hints such as:
“3) Do not stick your penis into household objects.”
Or the regrettably necessary reminder:
“5) Do not ever put your penis into someone who does not want this.”
Worthwhile, um, tips, regardless of one’s chromosomal composition.

I haven’t thought about the issues in the lawsuit in any depth yet. The plaintiffs may actually have a case. However, I applaud the City of Richmond for thinking outside the box in an effort to actually help some of its residents.

@piratedan: Were the people on Roseanne really poor? I didn’t see it much, but my recollection is right about median income, maybe better, but not upper middle class. Here in NYC though, there are lots of people who can’t believe you could live on less that $200,000 a year, when national median income is a quarter of that.

@David in NY: yes, they were really poor, Roseanne was a factory worker until the plant closed down. Goodman’s character was a construction worker. Her sister was a small town police officer. @burnspbesq:
From a cursory reading it looks like the only losers may be the very people causing most of the problems. ED has to pay a fair price for the properties and it looks like they intend to do that. ED has to be in the public interest and this looks like a much better public interest than a football stadium or some such. The bond holders will never be made whole given the properties but this gives them something. I think what big finance is fighting is that if this is successful, they would be finished. Sort of hoisted on their own petard.

The grief will subside, life will go on. But I look upon those moments of grief as a tribute to the memory of that person. It lets me step back and think about them for who they were, not their interaction with me.

@PeakVT: I think we’re pretty close. But some group of national politicians needs to decide that this is an issue that they need to speak out about, and that hasn’t really happened. Someone needs to demonstrate that they won’t get destroyed politically for supporting this.

@Belafon: I was thinking, since one look at my resume would show that I’m not doing nearly as much at the new job as I did at my old one, “Great people, wonderful organization, unfortunately there’s not as much expected of me as I’d hoped there would be. The laid-back pace makes for some easy work days, but I’d like more challenge and responsibility.” Or something.
@raven: 85 into downtown Atlanta. The Peach Pass is why I thought I could live with the commute. It actually does help, plus the fact that I don’t have to be downtown at exactly the height of rush hour, so traffic moves more than it jams. Two jobs ago I had the same commute and I was okay with it — but my last job was closer to home, and I didn’t realize how used to that I got in the years I was there.
(If it were 316 I probably would have thrown myself under the wheels of my own car by now. They’re doing a serious re-engineering of the intersection at 124/20, which might help eventually, but I don’t want to be anywhere near it now.)
jl
@burnspbesq: IANAL, so don’t understand that legalities of it.
Economics-wise, the issue is the plaintiffs say (from your link)
“The program would harm owners of mortgage bonds by paying them too little for loans,”
It is certainly debatable what the mortgage bonds are worth, and whether or not the bond holders get whatever the banks think they should get (‘everything’ I assume) would produce the most economic benefit.

@Ruckus:
That’s pretty much my first take. The big banks’ balance sheets are full of stuff that, it seems intuitively obvious, should have been written down (or off) several years ago. They’ve managed to avoid taking those writedowns because they’ve been able to claim a lack of reliable data prevented them from accurately revaluing those assets. Well, here comes a big-ass data set, and their insolvency will soon be on display for all to see.

@Betty Cracker: I saw that misbegotten show the first and only time when we were stuck in an ICU waiting room last summer. I cannot actually believe that there are people who watch it on purpose although I guess anything’s possible but it seemed like a horrible thing to inflict on people who were anxious & grieving. My sweet nephew who is developmentally disabled managed to get the agreement of everyone in the waiting room to switch to Sponge Bob Square Pants which seemed like a rare, intellectual treat after being exposed to Honey Boo Boo.

I haven’t watched Honey Boo Boo or any other reality show except when forced to in gyms or waiting rooms, but based on what I know about it, it’s really unfair to compare it to Roseanne. The family on Roseanne were whip-smart and funny. It was anything but making fun of the poor (and I’d say they were lower-middle-class, not poor). They were pretty fully rounded human beings for a sitcom.
ETA: Not to mention they were fictional characters.

Never had the displeasure of seeing HBB but I have had to sit through a couple of SpongeBob episodes with a 5 yr old. That SB is an intellectual treat in comparison tells me all I need to know. I some times wonder if one has to be emotionally and mentally hollow to get a job in modern TV and that the few shows that are good are aberrations.
