@TheMightyTrowel: Oh good Lord are they ever, bless their hearts. I think I’m an addict.
I think I said that I read the Grapes of Wrath and was not interested in seeing the movie. Had seen some outtakes.
I read a lot of books that I just don’t want to see the films that are made out of them. LOTR, for one. I have my own images in my mind, and don’t want to have to see them reconciled with a film image.
But as for the Grapes of Wrath, that was a terribly depressing book, not least because I could imagine it all being true.
Admittedly I’m def a movie person especially in the summer. During the fall/spring though, I still see a number of movies, but it’s Fall television season.
So far I have a pretty full slate of returning shows I plan to watch: Luther (of course!!), Person of Interest, Elementary, coupla sitcoms, Body of Proof and others.
So far, I haven’t heard of any new shows that I’m thinking I should give a try this upcoming season, but it is still kinda early, but with school starting and next month being September, it’s almost time.
So any new Fall television shows anybody looking forward to checking out.
Or what returning shows are ya’ll waiting for that ya’ll think I should try to catch up on.

Dean Baker manages to bash Summers and Brooks and Bezos in one column:
But Summers supporters countered that the country needed his brilliant mind. New York Times columnist David Brooks led the charge, telling the audience of an NPR show about Summers’ “meta-cognition skills,” which Brooks defined as his ability to know what he doesn’t know.

As for Dubious Battle, sounds interesting. I read The Worst Hard Times (Tim Eagen? It’s on my Nook so I can’t readily lay my hands on it) and it was amazing to me that the people actually rode out those ghastly dust storms. Well, they had no where else to go.

@Yatsuno: I read the complaint and, as I remember, most of the complaints revolved around Deen’s brother’s behavior, but, as Deen is the majority owner of the restaurant, I think (I’m not a lawyer) she still ends up liable, yes?
I’m mildly surprised she didn’t throw her brother under the bus the second all this stuff went public. And that the media didn’t want to highlight him more, because some of the stuff alleged- holy cow. And yuck.

@JPL: Soon as I read the headline on twitter, I knew the usual suspects would be ready to start with the Paula Deen is the “real” victim line. The lawsuit was always about much more than the n-word.
Still this lady was white but she was speaking as a manager and you could say on behalf of her workers. So basically the Black folk shoulda spoken up for themselves
It’s really unfair though. I’m assuming that the Black who she was speaking for due aren’t staying in the employ of Paula Deen being treated so disrespectfully (allegedly) if circumstances were such where they were able to find employement, in other words, how can one leave a job when they have no other job and even though it’s crappy, they still need to make a living, so they suffer in silence.

Posted this in the previous thread too, but the point that was made is a good one, IMHO.
A Lawyer from the NAACP legal fund on Hardball this afternoon said something that makes a lot of sense. And this headline fits what she said. What these Stop and Frisk laws are doing is cultivating a distrust of the police force and thereby making law enforcement harder. These same people who they are “stopping and frisking” are the same people law enforcement need to serve on juries and to help solve crimes by reporting and also being called as witnesses. The stop and frisk policy just make it so that these same people will not have any trust in law enforcement to be fair.
@TheMightyTrowel: Worst part is trying to figure it out sometimes. I thought I was getting the off-again speech then three days later it was more or less a never mind. But while he’s at Yale it will be more off than on. Maybe. I dunno, he’s just fun.

@schrodinger’s cat:
If the cat likes falling asleep in your lap, you can sometimes trim their nails as they’re falling asleep. Wait until they’re really sleepy but not yet all the way asleep, then go after the nails. Just have some styptic powder ready- for the cat if you cut a nail wrong and for yourself if the cat objects too strenuously.
Though it will probably quickly devolve into teen/20-somethings angst (it is the CW network, after all), the first few episodes of The Tomorrow People may be worth a look. trailer

Feeling slightly spent after watching Skyfall on Epix a while ago. The previews were good, I was really sorry I missed it in the theater, but now I’m a little relieved that I did. It sort of petered out, and it was about 30 minutes too long—and it felt like it was about two hours too long. Javier Bardem was wasted. They should have brought in his character from No Country for Old Men to be the supervillain. Now there’s some pure evil!
Maybe it just hit me on a bad day. Anyway, looking forward to the new hot Moneypenny and Ralph Fiennes as M going forward. And that young Q guy. Semi-reboot, I guess.
Left it on Epix and sort of half watched Goldfinger in the background afterwards. That really doesn’t hold up well, especially in comparison to Dr. No and From Russia with Love, which are both pretty well constructed.
Eh, that is all. I got nothing else, and I’m thinking about going to bed early, which is heresy for me.
@raven:
It’s worked for me. The trick is to do it while the cat is sleepy and relaxed, but not actually all the way asleep. They’re usually too out of it to object, and if they do object they’re too slow to do any damage. But don’t wait until they’re all the way asleep, because you’ll get torn up if you startle them awake.
@rikyrah: I love JRM even with all his issues, but I’m a little taped out on vampires on television. I had a personal boycott after Angel was cancelled and then a moratorium for a while after that and only got hooked on Tru Blood cause of a free HBO marathon (I’ve since gotten over the Tru Blood obsession).
I’ll admit, I’m too young to have ever watched the original Ironside show, but anything with Blari Underwood (my college era crush) I’ll give a try.
Brooklyn 9-9 I’m only gonna give a chance because of Andre Braugher! Andre Braugher had me at Homicide and so Brooklyn 9-9 had me at AndreBraugher…lol
Wondering when I can tackle my cat and clip her nails, they’ve gotten too sharp and pointy but I’m solo and she’s a handful.
The Spousal Unit has good luck using his own nail clippers on the cats, casually grabbing a paw & clipping one or two pointy ends off before they yank away. The (narrow) depth of the clippers means he doesn’t worry about clipping into the quick.
If you can get your cat into a carrier without too much trauma, sometimes groomers at the big-box pet stores will clip cat nails for a modest fee. And if you’re really desperate, your vet (or the vet tech at the vet) will do it for you.

@Roger Moore: I have zip experience with cats. We have 6 or 7 lying in the street every morning when we take our dawn walk. They seem to know that the dogs are leashed and just barely look at us. There is one black and white that other cat people seem to think is semi-abandoned and he’s really bold. He came up on the porch behind the princess when she came home and the Bohdi made a break for him. No damage but it worries me. . .some.

I was sitting in my new work environment (shared table) and realizing how much more my life sucks than even before, when it sucked prehistoric saurian donkey dong. I’m just having trouble being positive on it and the amount of people who think I should be fine with it because, hey, at least they just transferred you!-blows my fucking mind. Fucking servile mentality. I was shittily paid, but I made that position do things we needed and I worked hard. Now, my greatest issue is avoiding paper cuts and stacking all the old cpus I need to erase into stable towers. Every time I pass the people responsible-I get an urge to pimp slap them back into the last century. The fact that people now treat me differently-if they’re even willing to talk to me-is not making it any easier. It’s not supposed to be a demotion or any statement of lack on my part, but it certainly is looking more like it. I think I just about hate everyone, since I get asked to help out people on their video projects, but no one is helping me with anything I’d like to film. I fucking HATE everyone. /rant

Having a shitty day. My mother is in the hospital in the UK having suffered yet another heart attack, my husband is in the hospital in the US having suffered a suspected heart attack but it turns out it was some very long word which means that he had an infection in the muscles that surround his heart. Turns out the Emergency Room people misread his EKG. Ugh. I think the FSM hates me.
98.
raven
@Litlebritdifrnt: Aw dang, sounds like your hubby’s news it a bit better than it might be.
Raven swims every day, I believe, which also has a tremendous effect (as would any regular exercise). He probably wasn’t doing that when he was drinking.
Yes, it was much better news than a heart attack. Can’t understand it, he is fit as a butchers dog as they say having worked very hard to get the weight off after the previous heart attack. Apparently (according to the Cardiologist in Wilmington) the people in Whiteville just panicked thanks to his prior history and air lifted him to New Hanover for no apparent reason. Which means that we are now stuck with a$15,000 air lift bill which the insurance will pay but will leave us with a whopping deductible. Sigh.
As for my Mum, yesterday my Bro in Law was telling me to book my flights home, this morning the nurses are telling Norman that she is cracking them up with her jokes. I am not sure that I can handle this amount of stress in two days.
My Boss said “if anything happens do you know anyone around here who can type?” (ETA we do have a very important brief due in Federal Court in the next two weeks, I do understand his concern because I am so familiar with the case that I can sort of read his thoughts on his dictation and a newbie would be lost).

@ruemara: When it gets like that, the best advice a lawyer gave me was “Their job is to give you work, and your job is to do it. Also too, as it is an update/remake of an 8-season British series from the 1970s, before strident angst became de rigeur, the usual CW eye-rolling elements you cite may not kick in for a bit.

Intersting start to Breaking Bad, Low Winter Sun looks interesting, but if I had anything to do with the running of AMC there would no more guests outside of the Breaking Bad writers and the cast, allowed on Talking Bad.
That diarrhea-mouth from Modern Family ruined it, I envisioned Mike Armentrault popping a cap in her.
I can’t right now, not only because my passport is expired (although I know from experience that the British Embassy will move heaven and earth for me should it be needed) but the $2K air fare is out of reach. Having said that I do not think that Mum wants me there right now. She would much rather I wait until November and go to celebrate her 80th birthday, she is a tough old bird and is determined to go to that party!
119.
Violet
@Litlebritdifrnt: If you need to go, you can sometimes find last minute airfares. Bought a ticket to Manchester last year a week ahead and it was cheaper than the one purchased six weeks before for the exact same dates. Hopefully you won’t need to, but airfare might not be as bad as you thought.
Following my own advice, went back and re-watched a handful of Wonderfalls episodes last night.

But as for a question..? Still coming up blank.

The edit button seems to be gone. Did not mean to say “outtakes,” rather maybe scenes from the movie. Outtakes might be something different. I am a total ignoramus when it comes to movies.

Re: the Paula Deen thing- the judge made the correct ruling- it’s a reach for the plaintiff to say that the pattern of racial discrimination was discrimination against the plaintiff.

@PaulW:
