Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

The words do not have to be perfect.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

I really should read my own blog.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Republicans in disarray!

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

The revolution will be supervised.

A dilettante blog from the great progressive state of West Virginia.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

    @raven:

I think I said that I read the Grapes of Wrath and was not interested in seeing the movie. Had seen some outtakes.

I read a lot of books that I just don’t want to see the films that are made out of them. LOTR, for one. I have my own images in my mind, and don’t want to have to see them reconciled with a film image.

But as for the Grapes of Wrath, that was a terribly depressing book, not least because I could imagine it all being true.

But as for a question..? Still coming up blank.

Admittedly I’m def a movie person especially in the summer. During the fall/spring though, I still see a number of movies, but it’s Fall television season.

So far I have a pretty full slate of returning shows I plan to watch: Luther (of course!!), Person of Interest, Elementary, coupla sitcoms, Body of Proof and others.

So far, I haven’t heard of any new shows that I’m thinking I should give a try this upcoming season, but it is still kinda early, but with school starting and next month being September, it’s almost time.

So any new Fall television shows anybody looking forward to checking out.

Or what returning shows are ya’ll waiting for that ya’ll think I should try to catch up on.

Dean Baker manages to bash Summers and Brooks and Bezos in one column:

But Summers supporters countered that the country needed his brilliant mind. New York Times columnist David Brooks led the charge, telling the audience of an NPR show about Summers’ “meta-cognition skills,” which Brooks defined as his ability to know what he doesn’t know.

@JPL: Soon as I read the headline on twitter, I knew the usual suspects would be ready to start with the Paula Deen is the “real” victim line. The lawsuit was always about much more than the n-word.

Still this lady was white but she was speaking as a manager and you could say on behalf of her workers. So basically the Black folk shoulda spoken up for themselves

It’s really unfair though. I’m assuming that the Black who she was speaking for due aren’t staying in the employ of Paula Deen being treated so disrespectfully (allegedly) if circumstances were such where they were able to find employement, in other words, how can one leave a job when they have no other job and even though it’s crappy, they still need to make a living, so they suffer in silence.

Posted this in the previous thread too, but the point that was made is a good one, IMHO.

A Lawyer from the NAACP legal fund on Hardball this afternoon said something that makes a lot of sense. And this headline fits what she said. What these Stop and Frisk laws are doing is cultivating a distrust of the police force and thereby making law enforcement harder. These same people who they are “stopping and frisking” are the same people law enforcement need to serve on juries and to help solve crimes by reporting and also being called as witnesses. The stop and frisk policy just make it so that these same people will not have any trust in law enforcement to be fair.

Feeling slightly spent after watching Skyfall on Epix a while ago. The previews were good, I was really sorry I missed it in the theater, but now I’m a little relieved that I did. It sort of petered out, and it was about 30 minutes too long—and it felt like it was about two hours too long. Javier Bardem was wasted. They should have brought in his character from No Country for Old Men to be the supervillain. Now there’s some pure evil!

Maybe it just hit me on a bad day. Anyway, looking forward to the new hot Moneypenny and Ralph Fiennes as M going forward. And that young Q guy. Semi-reboot, I guess.

Left it on Epix and sort of half watched Goldfinger in the background afterwards. That really doesn’t hold up well, especially in comparison to Dr. No and From Russia with Love, which are both pretty well constructed.

Eh, that is all. I got nothing else, and I’m thinking about going to bed early, which is heresy for me.

They’re usually too out of it to object, and if they do object they’re too slow to do any damage. But don’t wait until they’re all the way asleep, because you’ll get torn up if you startle them awake.

Wondering when I can tackle my cat and clip her nails, they’ve gotten too sharp and pointy but I’m solo and she’s a handful.

The Spousal Unit has good luck using his own nail clippers on the cats, casually grabbing a paw & clipping one or two pointy ends off before they yank away. The (narrow) depth of the clippers means he doesn’t worry about clipping into the quick.

If you can get your cat into a carrier without too much trauma, sometimes groomers at the big-box pet stores will clip cat nails for a modest fee. And if you’re really desperate, your vet (or the vet tech at the vet) will do it for you.

I’m just having trouble being positive on it and the amount of people who think I should be fine with it because, hey, at least they just transferred you!-blows my fucking mind. Fucking servile mentality. I was shittily paid, but I made that position do things we needed and I worked hard. Now, my greatest issue is avoiding paper cuts and stacking all the old cpus I need to erase into stable towers. Every time I pass the people responsible-I get an urge to pimp slap them back into the last century. The fact that people now treat me differently-if they’re even willing to talk to me-is not making it any easier. It’s not supposed to be a demotion or any statement of lack on my part, but it certainly is looking more like it. Yes, it was much better news than a heart attack. Can’t understand it, he is fit as a butchers dog as they say having worked very hard to get the weight off after the previous heart attack. Apparently (according to the Cardiologist in Wilmington) the people in Whiteville just panicked thanks to his prior history and air lifted him to New Hanover for no apparent reason. Which means that we are now stuck with a$15,000 air lift bill which the insurance will pay but will leave us with a whopping deductible. Sigh.

As for my Mum, yesterday my Bro in Law was telling me to book my flights home, this morning the nurses are telling Norman that she is cracking them up with her jokes. I am not sure that I can handle this amount of stress in two days.

My Boss said “if anything happens do you know anyone around here who can type?” (ETA we do have a very important brief due in Federal Court in the next two weeks, I do understand his concern because I am so familiar with the case that I can sort of read his thoughts on his dictation and a newbie would be lost).
