I hate seeing Tbogg leave, but at least he is doing it on his own terms. Here are some of his greatest hits, although I always loved this post back from the Beauchamp days. The list of funny names and funny titles and awesome posts is almost too long to list, but I will always remember his skewering of Bob Owens as up there- various names included Gun Counter Gomer and the Von Clausewitz of Chigger Creek and so on.
I suppose it is fitting he is riding off into the sunset as the same time as his favorite recent target, Mayor Filner.
And how are we every to forget him calling Chris Christie the Outlaw Jersey Whale? Fucking genius.
Have a good life cleaning up Basset drool. We’ll miss y’all.
Mary G
Ditto. Will miss Thursday’s Wembly and Fenway.
Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader
Never cared for Tbogg. I don’t go in for that blog snark shit.
Elizabelle
I wonder if he’ll stay gone longer than JCole usually does.
Me, I see a Shakira GIF. And the Jersey Whale was one for the ages.
Come back on your own terms some day, TBogg.
kc
“Flowers for Goldberg,” hehehe.
Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader
Don’t even get me started on Bassets. Satan’s Very Own Dog Breed, after Beagles.
Yatsuno
Guest. Posting. Gig. Or at the very least get him commenting round these parts. My friend who breeds Dobies lives in SD, when I’m ready for one of his puppehs I plan on a meet-up before the road trip.
Anne Laurie
@Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader: Hey, the least we owe the internets is seriousness, knawhutayemeen?
LittlePig
I’ve been reading Tom since the old days, so it’s a tough day for me. I may actually have to become a Twitter feed follower, something I have studiously avoided to this point.
I always got a major kick out of his writing. Aw well, Pierce is still pitching.
Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader
Everyone’s always like, “Oh no, my Basset is different.” No, they’re all the same. A plodding infected stomach nose thing that makes a weird sound when you step on it.
Suzanne
@Yatsuno: THIS. Can’t he have an occasional home here??
JCT
His “Camp Journal” for Mayor Filner a few weeks ago was a side-splitting epic. I’m going to miss him.
Alexandra
I always had this irrationally slender hope that he’d pitch in here… but why give up your own masthead?
Might be a shitty silver lining, but when the next goober Republican president comes along, here’s hoping they’ll stir fresh new writing talent out of the minor leagues.
Felonius Monk
I came to TBogg kinda late, but have enjoyed his wit and humor. Sorry he’s leaving, but it is on his terms – so there’s that. I think he has some very unique ways of calling out the assholes.
Jane2
I’ll miss Tbogg, one of the three political blogs I still read. Now I’m down to Pierce and BJ.
kbuttle
I still like him heeding John’s call from some months back on the Republican skinny dipping in Israel story with the headline “Junket Drunk Dunks His Junk”. Fucking genius, indeed.
Loneoak
Adios to one of the funniest bastards on the net. A spot on BJ would be superb, and probably a lot less work that trying to maintain own’s own personal page.
Is it the death knell for FDL?
kindness
TBogg was one of the last redeeming features of fdl.
Zifnab
Never read him regularly, but BJ linked to him often enough that I never felt I had to. :-p He’ll be missed.
LittlePig
@Loneoak: Is it the death knell for FDL?
Only if it dies of terminal earnestness.
Aimai
I was reading tbogg back in the days of “America’s worst mother” with her children chigger, Teflon, florid and boopsy. His invention and invective never flagged.
burnspbesq
Love TBogg, wish he were continuing to blog.
But I still think that the real reason he is stopping is that Gerard Pique’s people figured out where he lived and threatened some awful fate if he didn’t stop messing around with the guy’s wife.
Baud
@Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader:
Agreed. Hopefully, now the Internet can get back to the serious discourse for which it was invented.
Comrade Jake
@kindness: try the only redeeming feature.
Sloegin
Dang it all. Well at least I can still catch him and Billmon on twitter.
Comrade Jake
From his most recent post:
McMegan will write something about public policy that will be completely wrong because she will be “unconvinced” due to the fact that the numbers fail to translate into cups, tablespoons, pinches, pounds, and liters … and also because she is paid to be wrong. But even if she weren’t paid to be wrong she’d still get it wrong.
Fucking perfect.
Roger Moore
Tell him he’s free to continue visiting Balloon-Juice as often as he likes.
Keith P.
I thought TBogg quit several months ago. Am I thinking of a different blogger from the same site…maybe a woman? I think I read about it here, but it was one of those that I didn’t read (like TBogg).
Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader
Never could figure out if Tbogg was one of the Jane Hamshers of the Left or not. Let’s just say he was a little ambiguous about his textual origination.
gogol's wife
I’d love to see him post here occasionally (or more often).
Odie Hugh Manatee
@Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader:
He was the spare tire on their jalopy, the only thing keeping it moving in any direction since there were still three other flats dragging it down.
kindness
@Keith P.: Na, he talked about leaving not to long ago then he announced he’d be leaving the end of the month. Here we are.
dewzke
TBogg was the only reason I continued to visit FDL.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
I’m glad he’ll be tweeting, but I predict he won’t be able to walk away, and won’t be able to contain his snark to 140 characters
donnah
Balloon Juice, Booman, and TBogg are my three favorite blogs, and I read all of them every day. Tom’s a genius and while I don’t blame him for getting while the getting’s good, I’ll miss him very much.
If you haven’t read him, definitely check out his classic posts. I laughed til I cried at some of them.
Xecky Gilchrist
I get all broke up every single time he quits.
But seriously, I will miss Mr. Bogg something fierce.
JPL
@donnah: He’ll pop up here in the comments or on twitter, at least I hope. What might be missing are the photos of dogs and hopefully he knows were are a pet friendly group.
Omnes Omnibus
He was one of the truly memorable posters back on Salon’s Table Talk.
jamick6000
Tbogg was a glib, middling writer. He should have quit 7 years ago.
jamick6000
I’ll miss TBogg’s blog.
The callbacks to sorta funny jokes he made 8 years ago. The hippie punching. The constant Sarah Palin jokes, because it’s *still* 2009.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Omnes Omnibus: Speaking of Salon, and you did, somebody there found Camille Paglia wandering its virtual halls talking to her imaginary relevance, and for some reason decided to interview her and publish the words.
Xecky Gilchrist
@jamick6000: He should have quit 7 years ago.
The only people more tenacious than TBogg were his purity-prog regular detractors.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Xecky Gilchrist: A Naderite version of Richard Cohen’s “I’m funny, and I can tell you, Stephen Colbert’s not funny”.

On the ‘net the bloggers come and go
Hostile or muy simpatico
jamick6000
Man, I loved when “TBogg” used to rip on Tim Tebow. That was some original, funny stuff. I’m going to miss that kind of funny, original thinking of making fun of Tim Tebow.
jamick6000
Wait, Chris Christie is fat … LIKE A WHALE, WHICH IS ALSO LARGE??????????? How does “TBogg” think of this stuff? Amazing!
LanceThruster

Omnes Omnibus
@jamick6000: Dude, as you are discovering (well, demonstrating), comedy is hard.
Just Some Fuckhead
Don’t be sad for Tbogg. This just means he’ll be eligible for the Blogging Hall of Fame sooner than his contemporaries.
Odie Hugh Manatee
@Omnes Omnibus:
And yet we laugh at him…
Oh, right… “at him”.
Desert Rat
@kindness:
By last, you mean only. I bookmarked his site on FDL. I haven’t had their mothership site bookmarked since Marcy Wheeler left.
Desert Rat
@jamick6000:
Tom wrote this post just for you, nitwit.
jamick6000
@Desert Rat: that is a very old post (from 2008). how did you find it so fast?
Omnes Omnibus
@jamick6000: It is in the links at the top of the page.
jamick6000
@Omnes Omnibus: ok I see it. It’s like the fourth one down on tbogg’s farewell post. thank you
Bobby Thomson
Hey remember that time that jamick6000 wrote that really funny post and everyone laughed and laughed? The intentionally funny one?
Yeah, me neither.
Felonius Monk
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Over at Esquire Charlie Pierce had a few words to say about Ms. Paglia yesterday, but then he linked to this Molly Ivins classic on said Camille.
danielx
I’ll miss that blog, and not only for TBogg letting me be a front pager on his turf (once, but it was oh so good). One of my proudest moments and fondest memories is being told that I – I personally, you understand – was an example of everything that’s wrong with this country. And all for saying that what TBogg needed was more filth and provocative headlines…the things people will get upset about, I tell ya.
tybee
doghouse died.
tbogg quits.
damn.
just damn.
Roger Moore
@tybee:
And the shitstain trolls keep on going.
Liberty60
@jamick6000: I only likedTBoggs first album; after that he sold out to the man and became commercialized.
Hal
FDL is pretty much a cesspool. I can’t even figure out who meets their standards anymore. The last peak I took was a few weeks ago and another poster referred to Obama as a house nigger. Tbogg actually called them out and was accused of being an apologist for Obama. Too bad. Some other sane people there would have been nice.
jamick6000
[dramatic pause]
[the tension builds]
@Bobby Thomson: an homage to Tbogg’s famous “snark”?
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
I’m gonna miss TBogg and the bassets on the internet something awful. To say I’m distraught would be histrionic, but I am damned upset.
LittlePig
@jamick6000: You obviously wouldn’t know. Perhaps you can sell your sour grape wine and purchase a sense of humor.
LittlePig
@Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader: Okay, look, you can get your FDL purity points, or you can say stupid shit like this. If you didn’t read the man, then why are you surprised your Derrida-esque analysis fails due to lack of input. Tom pissed off the FDL puritans because he could simultaneously hold two beliefs at one time (as I do, as in “Goddamn I’m glad Obama is president and not fucking Mitt Romney” and “President Obama really needs to cut off this New East Germany horseshit”). He seems like the sensible middle to me, as in understanding that politics is the art of the possible. The security state ain’t going away, but we damn sure need a new Church committee to bring this bullshit into the 21st century. Christ, it’s like the horse traffic regulation being a concern in 1930, long after autos had taken over. That’s precisely what drove the firebaggers to despair.
ira-NY
I will miss him, but not having to deal with the insanity of FDL will be a relief.
It seems with each passing day they become more unhinged. Now, there most popular topic is how the Tsarnaevs were framed.
ira-NY
I will miss him, but am relieved not to have to deal with the insane asylum FDL has become. It has really gone round the bend.
There most popular thread for weeks has been a bizarre rant about the Tsarnaev brothers being framed.
Hawes
Worst day on the internets in a while.
Gus
“National vodka repository Peggy Noonan…” I’m gonna miss stuff like that.
StringOnAStick
All total, Tbogg did his thing for about 13 years, and all just for fun. That’s a ton of time spent away from your family, your dogs, your meat space life, etc.; I’m so grateful for his work because it entertained the hell out of me and was always my favorite stop on the web. Keeping a daily blog going by yourself and at such a consistently high level of writing is certainly something to be proud of, but wow, what a lot of work too.
I’ll miss him terribly, but I have to say that will be tempered by knowing he chose to hang it up so he could spend more time enjoying life with his loved ones and away from pounding on a keyboard. Tbogg made a choice about what he felt mattered in his life, and I respect him for it.

“A womb with a view” for Romney’;s claiming to remember the Golden Jubilee of the Car, in Detroit, when he was sitll a fetus was terrific, too.
