I’m having a really shitty day. I hope yours is better! If your day sucks too, please feel free to piss and moan about it here. If you’re having a great day, please feel free to rub it in the shitty-day-havers’ faces here too.
The only thing that could make this day better would be if someone stomps on this crap-day post with interesting, insightful analysis on some pressing concern or a hilarious rant about something stupid someone on the internet said. Obviously, I got nothing.
PS: Heard Obama gave a pretty good speech to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, but I didn’t get to hear it. Because of my shitty day.

I didn’t hear the speech either, and would like to see a thread on it.

I heard, right here in these here comment boards, that he didn’t address the ongoing voting rights issues in this country.
Is that true?

@Ted & Hellen: I heard he also didn’t address whether Booker was gay or not.

What I’ve seen is a few comments from so-called liberals that are the equivalent of the Doctor’s Don’t you think she looks tired? Jesus. What is it about liberals that compels them to crap on their own? Even on something that is obviously symbolic?

I finally broke down and talked to my ex’s childhood bestie. So he could talk to his parents for me about the depression. I know it’s not a conclusion, but I feel a lot better. If I can get them to convince him to move back to NYC and live with them and get treatment, I won’t care one whit how much he will need to demonize me so he can move forward. Plus, there were these two squirrels chasing each other while I was carting some mail between departments. You can’t get better than happy young squirrels. Should I go take pics to improve Betty’s day?

Keystone XL is like your favorite pro sports team demanding that your hometown build them a new stadium and then, once you build it, they move to another city anyway but come back every once in a while to use the workout equipment. What a deal!

I did not see the President’s speech either, but I’m sure a) it was a good’un, and b) no one will listen except for those of us who mostly already agree.
Meanwhile, I’m reading the best book I’ve ever read about America’s decline and fall: George Packer’s The Unwinding. The use of personal narrative provides that extra emotional punch. For maximum wistfulness, I recommend reading it in a dive bar on a weeknight.

Every day is a shitty day, when you’re 50, unemployed, and have no prospects of finding work in the foreseeable future – maybe ever.
My question to our idiotic politicians of BOTH parties, but mostly Republicans:
If you want to advocate tax breaks for corporations, why not, uhm… you know… give tax breaks for companies that hire the long-term unemployed – those, over 50, and, under 30 – AND pay livable wages, and give benefits?
Or, ANY and ALL long-term unemployed people?
It’s not SocialiFasciCommunism – it’s just common fucking sense.
Ok.

I see the error of my thought process, right there – it’s with the words “common fucking sense.”

I’m really looking forward to Chris Hayes tonight, they are going to run the I Have a Dream speech in its entirety, which seldom ever happens.

I read (in no particular order) Richard Wright’s Black Boy, a 20th century history of Iran, Freaky Deaky, Touch, Cat Chaser, Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive in not so dissimilar places. p.a.
Per Matt ‘well I guess I can see your point there’ Yglesias, the crack Obama economic team wants to compromise with the GOP to avoid a shutdown/default. Part of their reasoning: to lower retiree benefits to increase long term investment.
Because today’s drowning-in-cash corporations are doing such a bang-up job on that score; it’s full steam ahead for the middle class and the poor.
Dee Loralei
@lamh36: it was a little after 3pm EDT. There were some really good speeches today.

@Emma: for some reason, I doubt that Obama is going to suddenly be forced into resigning because he looks tired. Although, given the shit that the GOP has thrown at him for the last five and a half years, and the near constant “he sold us out” whining from his own party…. I wouldn’t be shocked if he was tired and just decided to drop the mic.

@Mary G: to be honest, I didn’t expect to see a thread on this here at BJ, maybe if Zander or ABL still posted regularly.
To some people, this was no big day, so it didn’t cross their minds, of course the AA blogs I frequent did have threads about it. Not saying this is the case with the FPers here, but just saying the blogs I expected to have post about it did.

Well, I’m having a shitty week, too. Had doctor’s appointment to go over blood work, etc. I am now diagnosed with hypertension, high cholesterol and type II diabetes. My feet are okay but now I need glasses and I have a baby cataract growing in my left eye. Two of my prescriptions are not covered by my insurance. Now I find out that insurance has yet to pay the bills from my dislocated elbow in June. They probably want my neighbor to pay because I fell on their property. That is enough to raise my blood pressure even higher.
Anyhow, I recall that a week or two ago, several commenters were discussing pedometers or activity monitors. Does anyone have recommendations for something simple for a sedentary obese person so that I can start walking again? I just want something that I can wear on my wrist or around my neck.
Darkrose
@R-Jud: OW!
I hope you’re feeling better soon. That sounds remarkably unpleasant.
Dee Loralei
@the Conster: I know isn’t it amazing that the part of the speech that sang and soared down through the ages wasn’t intended to be included? It was a moment of magic, or as Pres. Obama said it was the Holy Ghost. (That may have been another speaker, I’m a little high on codeine.)
ruemara
@R-Jud: Dang, son (in a gender neutral, respectful way). That better be one hell of a milkshake. Shit, that better be all the milkshake. Feel better soon, heal up well and remember that ab workouts can’t continue until the staples are out, and at least a month or so after surgery. Hang in there.

Spent the morning at the urologist, where a one-hour appointment stretched to two because this was the week they went to a new computer system (seems that happens a lot in the healthcare industry) and the whole place was one giant charlie foxtrot. Didn’t tell me I didn’t already know, like my bladder empties just fine, my prostate is fine(female docs FTW – slender fingers doing this particular exam are a lot less of a PITA), the kidney cyst that started all this is the same size it was last time and the time before that, and they want to see me in another 12 months. Fun.
I’m trying not to think about the cash value of the PTO I had to take to do all of this. I could have taken the frau out to a very nice dinner with cocktails and a show on that, with enough left over to leave a very nice tip.
Jennifer
@R-Jud: Ok, that was funny as hell.

Betty, there’s a post over at Roy’s that I think you would at least find amusing & might help cheer you up. It’s the GOP culture-war cage-match between Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.
And ruemara, I am a Friend of the Squirrels…have about a dozen of them that will come up on the porch when I’m outside, including two who will come jump up on my lap. One day about a week and a half back, they just…disappeared. I couldn’t see any of them coming down to the ground or even moving around in the trees. Only one of the juveniles was coming around at all. Then a couple of days ago I saw one running down the powerline from the roof to the alley with what looked like a baby in her mouth. I saw her make this trip several times with several (presumed) babies. The next day, the tame male (Grampa Munster) showed up again. I think maybe when they’re birthin’ babies they run the males out of the territory, and stay close to the young ‘uns for the first week or so after they’re born. Really was just relieved that they hadn’t migrated, which I was amazed to learn they will do. Or emigrate is more accurate. There were accounts from Lewis & Clark about watching thousands of squirrels swimming across the Ohio River over a period of 3 – 4 days. Apparently back when there was pretty much unbroken forest north to south from time to time the squirrels would emigrate en masse. Just the thought of what that might look like is enough to cheer you up.
Origuy
@sacrablue: You can get a cheap pedometer for a few bucks. It goes on your waistband so that it can sense when you take a step. If you have a smartphone, there are a bunch of apps, some free, that work with the GPS to track your walk or run. Given your weight, age, etc. they can even estimate calories burned. I think some will work with heart monitors but I have no experience with that. I have used a Garmin Forerunner to track my runs. I have the 305, which is out of production, but I think the 110 may be the least expensive that works with a heart monitor. They go on your wrist.

@eataTREE: I read it a couple of weeks ago in one sitting. I believe at the time I suggested — and I will reiterate, with your support — that “The Unwinding” would be a fine discussion book here at Balloon Juice. Has anyone else read it? What did you think?
Betty Cracker
@lamh36: None taken at all!
@Jennifer: I like to watch squirrels, but I’ve learned so much more about their range and habits since a freaky white squirrel showed up on our block. It’s not an albino squirrel (I don’t think) because it doesn’t have red eyes. Anyhoo, because it stands out, I see it all over the neighborhood. I hadn’t realized how far afield they go, let alone that they emigrate, which is really cool to know.

the incompetent rummy masquerading as my supervisor screwed up & did not get the purchase request in for $2million in equipment we need to do what he has committed us to do next year. Next years budget came today & the money was not moved forward & won’t be. The best part is that the rummy has not told me yet that he fucked up royally. At this moment I have no plans for how we will get past this. It could end with us having to cut some contract positions – which is doubly unfair when it is rummy that should get the sack but probably won’t.
The network design I provided to the implementation group was put in incorrectly and is now keeping people from working. When I checked what happened the network guy told me what he configured and how that differed from what I designed. When I asked him why he didn’t do what I said he claimed he didn’t know what it was that I wanted . . . after stating what I had told him in the design earlier in the same email.

@BillinGlendaleCA: I am seriously curious about that. I did see somewhere that both Presidents Bush declined because of “health reasons.” I’ll give Poppy a pass on that — I don’t think he’s in very good shape — but Dubya had a fairly routine heart procedure weeks ago (an artery stent), by all accounts he is very fit for a man his age, and he’s still citing “health” concerns? I had quadruple bypass surgery and was back at work part time and going out to dinner within about 10 days of the surgery.

A good day here in Sonoma. Got a much needed haircut so I am feeling a bit more glam, a box of color to temporarily cover the grays as I get busy with my job search, car repairs are going to cost just over half what I expected, and my elderly kitty and I have solved her “peeing outside the box” issues.
I was going to put a tray under the box until I glanced to my left and realized that the itty bitty shower stall is essentially a tray with a drain in it. Cat box in the shower (except when I am using it and we rarely overlap), and kitty has figured it out. Face it – we all pee in the shower – and kitty is not only permitted, but encouraged to do so. A quick tidy of the errant litter in the shower stall with a whisk broom and dust pan, a rinse from the shower head a couple times a day and problem is solved! Creative solutions like this always make me happy – wonder if I can use this in a job interview?

Any drug testing experts here? I’ve been interviewing for a job and on my final interview they told me that I would need to go through a background check and drug test. The problem for me is that it’s a hair drug test. I’ve only smoked a small amount of marijuana in the last 3 months (since Memorial Day), 4th of July weekend, and it was mid to low grade stuff at that. My hair is always kept short and I’ve had it cut at least 3 times since the last time I smoked. I have a fast metabolism and exercise semi-regularly. From what I can find on the internet it says that it’s detectable in the hair up to 90 days. How likely is it that I will test positive?

And don’t wait for a Powerball win to move to Sonoma. Not sure where you and your fam reside, but I am able to live here – (recently) unemployed and pretty broke – in a wee cottage that suits me in a place that feels very much like home. Wonderful place and people here. I was talking to a visitor the other day and she asked how many people here are “full-time” residents. I was all like “Well…most of us. There are city folks with summer homes, but this ain’t the Hamptons – it’s a real place filled with real people and a strong sense of community.” Napa can be pretty precious, but Sonoma can be pretty gnarly and organic, depending on where you find yourself. What I love about Weight Watchers is that it gives you your daily points, some guidance, and a few extra whoopie points for that ice cream craving. Living in a Cuban household there’s a lot more rice and other stuff than in a general American diet, but I can account for that.

@seaboogie: I live in eastern North Carolina. I would love to move to your area, but circumstances won’t permit that now. When I visited northern California I felt as if I fit in. I have never felt that here in NC. I’m a fair skinned red haired, non baptist woman, and I don’t much care for deep fried foods. I am also a woman who has no problem expressing myself, so NC has not always been a good fit, but things are improving. My mom is 80 and I am needed here for a while. A fairly long while if I’m lucky. I do hope to visit northern California again some day, so there is that to look forward to.
I am very much a dog person, and this is the first time in 20 years or more that I haven’t had a dog in the house. I’ve usually had two dogs, so there has always been a fury presence. It’s oddly quiet here and I hope to get some dog noise back someday soonish.

@sacrablue: Yeah, the little New Balance pedometer is good; less than $20, and, if you’re a female type person, small enough to tuck in a bra. For the men, put it in a wrist band.

It looks like all federal gun control laws are about to be null and void in the not-so-great, but clearly insane state of Missouri, and any federal agent trying to enforce a federal gun control law will be a criminal in the Show-Me State. Some might argue that the Republicans are insane, therefore they can’t be held responsible for this kind of bizarre lunacy. But what about Democrats?
The Onion is becoming superfluous.
With Democrats like that we don’t need Republicans to wreck this country. I certainly hope this clown has some stiff competition from other Democratic candidates when he’s up for re-election.

Third day with a cold — cough, sore throat, low temperature, shivers, sweats, phlegm, etc. I need more cough drops and don’t feel like going out. Tried to sleep during the day, was able to get in some nap time but it hasn’t made me feel better.

@Trollhattan:
Idiotocracy seemed most appropriate considering it was Douche & Bag we were discussing – I bet IRL DOuche & Bag’s name is Frito Starbucks Costco brought to you by Carl’s Jr.

@Schlemizel:
Sounds like you could use some management training classes. Everything is somebody else’s fault, am I right?
Ted & Hellen
@Schlemizel:
Maybe if you spent less time on the intertrons trolling a blog about people you don’t like, your work situation wouldn’t be such a shit pile.
Just trying to help.

Can’t tell you all how much this thread amuses me. Be careful. You can’t say too many mean things to Cole’s sycophantic court jester or the shut in will start deleting them.

@amk:
Oh…you don’t support them, enema breath?

@Cassidy:
Assy! You’re back!

@Juju:
Now don’t be silly.
It’s because there is always a driver but not always a passenger, so it gets ‘used up’ on the driver’s side faster.

@amk:
that is an insult to douche bags.
turdfistshellen is not quite up to the level of a douche bag.
Omnes Omnibus
@Dead Ernest: Not on right hand drive cars.
Dead Ernest
@Omnes Omnibus:
An Excellent point Omnes.
…I’m just gonna say ‘Mobius Strip’
then run away.
Juju
@Dead Ernest: That sounds reasonable to me.

First day back at work after being off 4 weeks for surgery.
Not a bad day, not a good day. Just another day;

@Juju: Well, thank Dog you’re not a Baptist, else when you arrive here and fall into a vat of fermenting grape juice, you are apt to fell a might bit confused. Outspokeness is welcome, because how else would the Sebastianis (of fermented grape juice fame) have been able to support the Mormons on Prop 8 on the ballot here? Everyone and their dog is welcome here. As I used to tell Seamus…”soon, soon…” or maybe for you as he also understood “after, after….”
Steeplejack
@PurpleGirl:
Bummer. Hope you feel better soon.
Cassidy
@Jane2: Not back.

@seaboogie: Make sure you flush it frequently. We had a cat who developed the convenient habit of peeing in a particular sink, and all was sunshine and roses, except that his pee corroded the hell out of the drain.
