Welp, I’m off to bed. Night BJ. I know I’ve been harping on the Idris Elba show Luther, but it really is that good. Case in point, tonight’s episode was soo good and so full of suspense. It has been a long time since I yelled at a tv screen or that the ending of an episode mad me damn near cry. Tonight’s episode did that. Damn. I’m telling ya’ll if ya got Netflix, you need to watch Luther season 1 and 2 and then wait for season 3. It is worth it. Tomorrow night’s episode is the last one for at least awhile unless/until they make the Idris movie sometime next year (the writer says he already has the script written, but Idris Elba is kinda busy and if the Nelson Mandela biopic is any good, he’s gonna be even busier!) and then that’s it. Damn you Luther writers.
Alright, found this gif for the ladies and all @idriselba and #Luther lovers! Enjoy and good night!

That’ll teach ya not to have ravens in the bed. Shouldn’t birds be in a nest?

Hurry up offense + thin air = serious ass kicking.
And I like the new informative shit.

Who won the Superbowl, again? These guys stink.
TheMightyTrowel
Had one of those great cultural differences moments today. Mr. Trowel has a bunch of grey coming in on his beard/sideburns and I was trying to be cute and sexy so I told him it gave me ‘hot for teacher’ tingles. Then I had to explain ‘hot for teacher’, Van Halen and American 80s hair rock/metal. Mr. Trowel was in his teens in the 80s, but damn if he seems to have existed entirely in a cocoon of pot smoke, nail polish and goth bands.
ETA: losing my mind and substituting phrases I hear on the radio for words I meant to type. Jesus.

And that Ravens-Broncos game is majorly rain delayed. If the Ravens were going to shit the bed, they could have just let everyone know and get the locals to their newscasts in a timely fashion.
taylormattd
Fuck the Ravens.
But more importantly, GO HAWKS!

Take this job and shove it.

And omg, Cole, where are you at in Breaking Bad? What season? I only started it this summer, and just got caught up this week. Holy fuck, you have *no* idea.

Folks need to check out Lawrence O’Donnell’s rewrite this evening on Ronald Reagan and chemical weapons and Saddam Hussein.
St. Reagan was Saddam’s supplier! And Twice Alleged Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld sealed the deal.
The collection of garbage known as “The Republican Party” needs it’s face rubbed in this shit.

“Drive, She Said” is also an excellent song.

I wish you would stop using shitting the bed as your go-to metaphor. It’s disgusting.

The Dangerman
Leon Lett is smiling tonight as he’s no longer the person that fucked up the worst in a game; give up 7, hurt one of your own players, keeps Manning in the game (where he can get hurt). He best hope he’s not on the cut line or he’s unemployed tomorrow.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Bruce S: That was a pretty damn good Rewrite.
Punchy
In his defense, Raven is pretty old. Perhaps shitting beds is a sign of advanced age, or ‘Nam-induced PTSD.
Face
@The Dangerman: what happened? Turned it off. Did he showboat into the endzone and get caught from behind?
The Dangerman
@Face:
No, he had the Pick 6 and dropped the ball a yard or two early in his premature celebration; watching it live, I thought, damn that was close to a fumble, but watching replay, it was clear. Ball went through the end zone for touchback.

Celebration injuries are the best injuries.

@mdblanche: Huh. Something’s going on out there.
I haven’t seen many people writing about the potential influence of Obamacare on the labor market. Job lock is a pretty big phenomena, especially for lower-middle class workers, and more of them should start feeling empowered to leaved jobs. And it seems to be telling even lower-wage workers that (employer mandate) they deserve better treatment and compensation than they’ve been receiving.
I wonder how much of the GOP opposition to Obamacare is simply the recognition that it empowers workers over employers.
Face
By my rough calc, that last TD pass by Manning just gave him the All-Time Highest Fantasy Points Award. Depending on scoring, he’s got at least 60pts
Redshirt
@? Martin: You sound like a Communist. And I like it.
Also too, I drafted Peyton and Demarius.

I have been, having The Talk with my nine-year-old for the last few months. Tonight, I touched on STIs and condoms.
Me: “Do you know what a condom is?”
Her: “Yeah. Didn’t we find one on the sidewalk that one time?”
Awkward. Hilarious.
mdblanche
@? Martin: I’d say it’s also a sign of improvement in the labor market even if the quality of jobs is still a serious problem. Nobody feels empowered to leave their job if they doubt they can get a new one.

In one of my FF leagues one team has both Peyton and Julius Thomas. They had a total of 88 fantasy points between them and they were both on the bench. The owner won’t live that down for a while. (He drafted both Manning and Drew Brees, which means this kind of thing will be happening to him all season.)

@Suffern ACE: Putin would get 44-48% of the US vote if he ran as a Republican. Free Republic has gone Full Putin, for reference.

OK, I was a teen in the 80’s and I existed in a haze of cigarette smoke, beer and industrial/goth/alterna/whatthefuckever and I knew what the fuck ‘Hot for Teacher’ was, so I say…’Husband in a Coma’.
I love his solo efforts, and always did love Wall of Voodoo, so this is a nice earworm to have.
Stan Ridgway – Talkin’ Wall of Voodoo Blues Part 1 (5:55)
“Yeah, we played a show for 40 grand / and the manager took … every… cent”
Which makes me feel kind of bad about linking Wall of Voodoo — Call of the West (1982) — Call of the West (6:00)
This might be better: Stan Ridgway – Mosquitos (1989) – Newspapers (2:42)
But honestly, Stone Temple Pilots – Purple (1994) – Vasoline (2:57) fits my mood better.

Wall of Voodoo. Best thing they ever did was the “Ring of Fire” cover in Francis Della’s art-porn masterpiece “Nightdreams”. Colloquially known as “The Burning Wall of Cowgirl Cunnilingus” scene. Now THAT was a music video.

@lamh36:
(Note: no spoilers included.)
I (mini-)binge-watched the first two episodes of the new Luther early this evening. Very good. My only minor complaint was in the second episode, where two women had an attack of horror movie “What’s that noise? I’ll go look!” syndrome. Does no one ever think to get out of the house, go to the neighbors’ and, oh, yeah, call the cops on your cell phone while you’re doing that? Jeez.
But, like I said, minor complaint. The visuals are good, the acting is good, the story is good (so far). And Idris Elba does have, uh, charisma. Looking forward to the next two episodes.
And the first two seasons are very good, for people who haven’t seen those.

Great song John! I always thought Ridgway a great crafter of lyric. “Drive, She Said” is another favorite from his solo work.

Love Payton, can’t stand his brother. Also that jailtime-skirter Ray Lewis. Hated it when my Niners lost to the Carpetbaggers last year. Without him though, the feeling just isn’t the same. No hate, no schadenfreude tonight. Especially since I kind of like Joe Flacco.

Would just like to thank John and many BJ commenters for their recommendation of the ”furminator’. Wow! Mine arrived yesterday( purchased through RSPCA, so good works from profit) and both my kitteh and puppy love it. Even tho I had seen the pics still could not believe the amount of fur it removed. Thanks all.
OGLiberal
One player keeper league and I kept Peyton. So disappointed. Much more disappointed that I passed up Demarius Thomas for somebody else (can’t recall but not a slacker so not that disappointed) because I was concerned about losing two key guys on a bye week. I could have won the week outright tonight had I had D. Thomas as well. Will win anyway…have 67 points already and Peyton only guy who played so far.
Julius Thomas went undrafted in my league. Guess who’ll be the top waivers pick (not mine) this week?
TheMightyTrowel
@Debbie(aussie): How are you holding up with all the election horriblity? The electioneering is actually not too bad (ironically) in the capital, but it seems like Brisbane is constantly on my news….

@Debbie(aussie): I just got one too and I agree – it’s pretty amazing. I could probably sit there brushing her for an hour and still have more fur coming off. And she seems to love it, which helps, because she’s usually pretty…averse, shall we say, to any sort of grooming :)

News from the Golden Chersonese: The Malaysian government has denied US metal band Lamb of God a permit to play a gig here on September 28 — on the grounds that the band has been known to quote the Quran in its song lyrics. Not being a LoG fan, I have no idea if the quotations are out of context or otherwise offensive in themselves, although I do know that the Malaysians who support this kind of ban have no great love for metalheads.

@TheMightyTrowel: hubby and I voted Tuesday, we fly to Townsville to visit our daughter(so excited) tomorrow.
I am not impressed. I despise Tony Abbott and am very disapointed with the ALP all around, voted Greens 1, AlP2nd. The senate was a bitch. Wanted my preferences to count so had to vote 1-82. Very scared about federal level austerity. We have already experienced it here in Quinceland. Absolute fools if they vote as the polls suggest.
Debbie(aussie)
@Alison: I had that experience too, Fry just loved it, don’t stop. Can see some quality time in ou future:)
Anne Laurie
@Amir Khalid: The Wiki says the band “frequently use biblical references, but often convey anti-religious sentiment”. Even just using those references would be a red flag for some censors, wouldn’t it?
Suffern ACE
@Debbie(aussie): there is actually a city of Townsville down under?

@Debbie(aussie): Ugh. it’s a shit show all round – i have my fingers crossed that the polls here are as bad as the UK polls that predicted a blowout for Cameron in 2010. Not hopeful though. I’m constantly astounded by the level of pettiness mixed with amateurishness in Australian politics. It’s like watching middle schoolers fight for a student council seat so they can be the one to plan the next dance. No long term thinking, no policy, no respect (even if only for themselves). It’s been ugly and depressing to watch, but as a non citizen, thanks for voting Green. I’m thinking green thoughts for the ACT senate seat.
