Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Glad to see the league acknowledging that the Packers didn’t get screwed by a blown call, they actually got helped by a blown call on the same play when the Niners’ Joe Staley got flagged for getting his face mask repeatedly in the way of Clay Matthews’ fists.

John, your Mountaineers may be getting some indirect taint:

“The Oklahoman reported, citing an unidentified source, on Saturday that former assistant coach Joe DeForest is accused in the story of running a bonus program, paying players for big plays as recently as 2011. DeForest now works as an assistant coach at West Virginia for head coach Dana Holgorsen, who is a former offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.”

Okie St looks to be headed for a fall, and Holgorsen will probably be found to have played some role.

On another note, Novak blew the 3rd set and never got his head back in the game. If he bothered to keep the intensity up at all times, he’s definitely superior to Nadal…but he just seems like he gets bored during the match and phones it in at certain times.

    Hill Dweller

    September 9, 2013 at 8:58 pm

    @PsiFighter37:

I’ve heard this rumor – why do people think Nadal is a doper?

That rumor has dogged him since he came on Tour. He was purportedly one of the names on the client list of the doctor at the center of the huge Operation Puerto doping scandal. The judge for said doctor’s trial in Spain just ordered the 200 bags of blood and plasma destroyed. So, we’ll never know.

Also too, watch him play. In ’09, after playing a nearly 5 hour semi against Verdasco(another rumored doper), he beat a rested Federer in the Aussie Open final by wearing him down physically in the 5th set.

This year is a great example of Nadal’s miraculous jump in level. He hadn’t won a hard court title in 2+ years coming into this season, but he’s now undefeated on hard courts this season. Something far better hard court players never accomplished. Granted, the glacially slow courts and balls certainly help a clay courter like Nadal, but he is still an inferior hard court player to several other guys on Tour.

  44. 44.

    PsiFighter37

    September 9, 2013 at 9:01 pm

@Hill Dweller: To be fair, the other Top 4 guys outside of Federer (Djokovic and Murray) are also great at recovering from long matches as well. Fed was great, but he never was anywhere close to the kind of shape that these 3 are in – they’re all physical specimens who can grind away for hours.

@PsiFighter37: Actually, Djokovic used to wilt in any sort of heat, but after “cutting out gluten” he also became an energizer bunny. Murray tends to fade in long matches.

No one has ever done what Nadal does. Keep in mind, we’ve been told he’s had knee issues for the better part of the last decade. Degenerative knee issues demand less training, not more. But he always seems to be fitter than anyone on Tour.

If there is doping in tennis(very likely), it’s the fault of rocket scientists running the sport. They decided in the last 5/6 years to homogenize the Tour, and force the players to endure clay court points year round. It’s become a war of attrition, as opposed to a game of skill. Tactics have gone out the window.

LAKE MARY, Fla. (AP) – The sobbing wife of George Zimmerman called 911 Monday to report that her estranged husband was threatening her with a gun and had punched her father in the nose, but hours later decided not to press charges against the man acquitted of all charges for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin.

Lake Mary police officers were still investigating the encounter as a domestic dispute, but no charges had been filed Monday afternoon. Shellie Zimmerman left the house after being questioned by police. George Zimmerman remained there into early evening and his attorney denied any wrongdoing by his client. He was not arrested.

I’ll note for the record Belichik has never won a Superbowl without Romeo Crennell and Charlie Weiss, his then long time assistants. I posit these two familiar coaches absence has made the difference in the Patriots Superbowl woes. Oh, what could have been…

    September 9, 2013 at 9:50 pm

    @MoeLarryAndJesus:

My bad, two winning season without Brady as his QB. You don’t believe me?

Bill’s record as a coach here. His first year with the Pats Bledsoe was his QB. In 2001 Bledsoe gets injured and Brady steps in.

He sucked as a coach, while at Cleveland.

He sucked his first year in New England, with Bledsoe under center. He was 0-2, in 2001, before Bledsoe went down.

It’s always hard to separate how good a coach is versus how much talent he has on a roster, but to think Brady isn’t responsible for most Belichick’s success in New England just ignores his lack luster results without Brady in New England and Cleveland.

  61. 61.

    MoeLarryAndJesus

    September 9, 2013 at 9:59 pm

@gene108: Hey, stupid, he’s only had four seasons as a head coach without Brady.

In one of them he made the playoffs with the CLEVELAND BROWNS.

In another he went 11-5 with MATT CASSELL as his QB.

You have no point. You’re a baboon with a stick up your ass, representing your Belichick hate.

    efgoldman says:

But the fact remains: Belichik (and Brady) have won a shitload of games, been in three more Super Bowls, but the three they won were with lots of players left from the Parcells regime, and they’ve lost the other three.

In fact there were NOT “lots of players” left from the Parcells days on the 2nd and 3rd SB winners, but why let facts get in the way of a good Belichick-hate session?

Will Parcells worshippers admit that the Tuna never won without Belichick on his staff? Which coach owns more Super Bowl rings, Parcells or Belichick?

Only a moron who thinks footballs are round could conclude that the Tuna was a better coach than BB.

  63. 63.

    gene108

    September 9, 2013 at 10:04 pm

    @efgoldman:

Yeah, but the ghost of Johnny Unitas infused with Dan Marino’s ectoplasm couldn’t win all by himself.

Yes but there have been plenty of good defensive coordinators, who do not make it as head coaches because they do not have a reliable offense.

Brady gave Belichick the elite QB, almost every other team in the league wishes they had and thus an offense that could go along with a good defense.

Bledsoe, McNabb and many other QB’s are very good, but they have some throws they just can’t make. That’s not the case with Brady, he can make any throw accurately and that is rare. Hell, I’d even throw Favre into the fatally flawed QB category, because he’s prone to turn overs.

  64. 64.

    MoeLarryAndJesus

    September 9, 2013 at 10:07 pm

@gene108: Any longtime Patriots fan knows that Belichick helped Brady grow into the QB he is today.

In 2001 Brady wasn’t BRADY, get it? His role has grown as time has gone on. The coach-QB partnership hasn’t been an accident.

  67. 67.

    gene108

    September 9, 2013 at 10:16 pm

    @MoeLarryAndJesus:

Hey, stupid, he’s only had four seasons as a head coach without Brady.

    Wrong.

Seven seasons without Brady. 5 in Cleveland, first year in New England and the year with Castle. He had 2 winning seasons out of those seven.

Please tell me how much winning ANY great coach has done without a good QB.

Trent Dilfer won a Superbowl, so did Jim McMahon and Jeff Hostetler, along with the post-Joe Theisman journeyman QB’s Joe Gibbs won with, at Washington.

In the modern NFL it’ll probably be really hard, because defense has been devalued by the recent rules changes and it has become a passing league, but teams have won without elite QB’s in the past.

No one knows what Belichick would have done without Brady, any more than anyone knows what Parcells would have done without LT and Belichick.

BB’s piss-poor drafting has somehow led to an endless stream of 10+ win seasons. Please tell me what Parcells ever did worth a damn after leaving the Giants and why he’s supposed to be the better judge of anything.

@Corner Stone: RG3 should be paying attention to Vick. He’s looking at his miserable future if he keeps this “running QB” crap up.

@MoeLarryAndJesus: Vick is faster, quicker, has a stronger arm – and still gets his crotch hurt trying to get a few extra yards.
I don’t have the stats in front of me but I’d bet Vick also outweighs RG.

That was awful, awful….awful DB play by the Iggles. Just awful.

What is wrong with ESPN’s coverage of Texans @ Chargers? Berman and Dilfer sound like they are in a van somewhere in FL SAC command calling in play by play strikes.
This is fucking awful commentary, and I happen to dig Dilfer on analysis in the studio.

    @Irony Abounds:

Having built (with my own two hands, and the hands of many friends) a winter vacation home in way SE Arizona, imagine my dismay to see RichRod’s nasty face on billboards all over the state.

I was glad to see the bastid gone to Michigan, where he failed properly.

Why would any successful college program hire a dishonest and incompetent bastgid like RichRod?

Why do I still have to see his face and hear his “coaching” discussed by so-called experts in teh NCAA football sport?????

Chris Berman must be on Quaaludes. He is awful.

If Berman were any *less* enthused by that Texans TD I’d call him clinically dead.

Vick’s 2 inches shorter and 2 pounds lighter. Either way their shared approach is not a recipe for a healthy or successful career.

@Corner Stone: Yeah, Berman is the worst play-by-play guy on Earth right now. Why is he even bothering to do this job these days?
