Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

The lights are all blinking red.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Let there be snark.

Consistently wrong since 2002

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

“They all knew.”

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Commentor Raven linked to this the other night, and it just seemed appropriate.

Besides mourning, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

Figure that running a half-marathon is as good a way to kick off my annual ‘getting into proper shape’ drive in the fall…so I’ll be kicking off another round of P90X in about 5-10 minutes.

Other than that, I just feel a bit weary overall. This year went by quickly, but it never stops. There are times where I would like to just blow off work for a month or two and fully recharge myself – I haven’t had a long stretch of free time since my middle school summers (I worked during all my summers in high school and college). Taking a sabbatical from work for a few months, even if unpaid, would be awesome.

I’m also afraid that I’d like it too much and decide to never come back.

    SPOILER dude.

Some of us are still languishing in the first season of BB. (Arrested attention spans.)

Also: having snarked this morning about how cynical I’m getting about the mass shootings, I am just so sad tonight. The idea of 12 local families without a loved one returning home tonight, just for having gone to work on a grey, slightly rainy morning in Washington, DC.

ETA: I was drinking coffee on the deck while they were being killed or injured, and we shared the same sky. Horrifying.

I know not everyone was a fan of the new season of AD, but I thought it was really cleverly done. My only request is that if they do another season, they have to make sure everyone has more time to spend together. It’s not quite the same show when you only get 1/3 or 1/2 of the insanity at the same time.

Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years A Slave, which as you linked to it, has been getting great reviews at the film fests. Michael B Jordan for Fruitville Station and hey, the academy already loves Forrest Whitaker, so the Butler may have a nom somewhere too!

@lamh36: I’m walking on eggshells here because it is so easy to offend inadvertently (and please call me on it if I do, and I will retract and apologize immediately) — but I yearn for the day when an AfAm film actor can play a role that isn’t necessarily defined by being a Role of Colour.

It’s happening in opera, has been in fact for several years. I saw a Met performance of Rossini’s La Cenerentola about four or five years ago in which Cinderella was white, Prince Charming (Prince Ramiro) was African American (Lawrence Brownlee), and nobody blinked. Lots of other examples. A black Ariel in a version of The Tempest, and I’m sure I’m forgetting lots of examples. Point is, it’s a medium where race is becoming/has become almost irrelevant and has nothing to do with the part the singer plays. That’s where I’d like movies to go.

Again, if I have inadvertently offended I do apologize.

I really hope that makes sense. And again, if I stepped in it, I

@normal liberal: Haven’t people been hoping Madigan runs at some point for something higher for a long time now?

Besides, wouldn’t there be loads of stupid psychodrama written in the paper about the governor being under the thumb of her father (he’s Speaker of the House, right)? I’m not super-familiar with Illinois state politics (except that it might be even more fucked up than NY state politics, even though Democrats run the show), but that seems like something our wonderful MSM would drool over.

  64. 64.

    lamh36

    September 16, 2013 at 9:30 pm

@SiubhanDuinne: no offense, but in all the movies I’m talking about the characters are real people who are all people of color so by definition the roles they are playing have to be defined by being P.O.C.

Colorblind casting is all well and good, but in these cases, the fact is that the people they portray are P.O.C. Nelson Mandela, Solomon Northup (the real free man who was sold into slavery) and Oscar Grant. This is not a case of blind type casting, but I do agree with you comment there.

So your sentiment while all well and good in other cases, doesn’t fit in the cases I’m presenting.

Unfortunately though, we are still at a point in the world where the first Miss America of Indian descent is being racked over coals by bigoted idiots…so sensibility in casting ain’t happening anytime soon

    September 16, 2013 at 9:32 pm

@lamh36: I thought the new movie did a number of things correct, even while it chose to go in a slightly darker (supposed to be modern) direction.
    1. We watched the original movie after the new trailers started showing but before the movie came out. If you watch, you will see the “S” being worn by Jor El. The new movie explores it more.
    2. It got rid of the whole “how does Lois not know who Superman is?” thing. I was the only one who laughed at “Welcome to the Planet.”
    3. It played with how Superman would actually hide in the 21st century. Though, if you’ve seen Justice League, you know it’s only a matter of time before they figure it out, especially since Lois did.
    4. How Lex figures out Superman is allergic to kryptonite in the original was lame. Glad they left it out.

    September 16, 2013 at 9:40 pm

@Belafon: I’m not a huge ‘Superman’ fan (for whatever reason, I subjected myself to 7 torturous seasons of ‘Smallville’ before I decided to give it up; and I saw ‘Superman Returns’, which was bad in many, many ways), but I thought the new one was done decently. I do wish there was a bit more backstory on Clark as a kid, and I thought the way they handled Jonathan Kent was a bit contrived, but if anything, I thought they did a really good job. One of the main complaints was how much the end of the movie was just pure action – but it made total sense. If you have Kryptonians fighting each other and humans, it shouldn’t be a fair fight – it should be an absolute demolition derby, which is what happened.

In all, I thought it was pretty solid. I don’t know if a Superman/Batman movie is really going to work well together, Ben Affleck aside…in the universe they’ve created, Morgan Freeman is going to have to be hiding some really fucking awesome toys in that underground bunker of his for Batman to even fight anywhere close to the same level as Superman.

    @PsiFighter37:
Yes, we’ve been Waiting for Amy for quite some time. No one seems especially concerned about the Daddy problem (Madigan pere isn’t the drag that, say, Richard Daley the Elder was).

She’s been AG for forever, without drama and scandal. As you note, she hasn’t seemed like she wanted it. She could easily have had Mark Kirk’s Senate seat, but I’d prefer it if she turfed out Quinn and stomped on whichever victim the Republicans run this time. Quinn barely hung on the last time, and the state can’t be having with the creeps that form the R front bench.

@SiubhanDuinne: I can think of a couple of movies, but I’ll list one:
The Avengers. A white Samuel Jackson could have played in the role, but I don’t think we have a white Samuel Jackson. The comic book character is white, though.

@normal liberal: Well, on the bright side, if a Republican gets elected governor, it should be their turn to go to jail for something, right?

That said, it does sound like Lisa Madigan won’t run for governor as long as her father runs the House…and he’s been Speaker for nearly the entire past quarter century (thank you, Wikipedia). Talk about having an iron grip on your caucus…basically just like Sheldon Silver here in NY (that fucker will never, EVER quit. He will always be 1 of the 3 men in the room).

@Belafon: The Marvel Cinematic Universe is actually based on the alternate Ultimates timeline. When it was first under development in the comics back in 2001, the artist decided to base the look of his Nick Fury on Samuel L. Jackson, who gave them permission on the condition that he get the role if they ever used Fury in a movie.

Since the spectacular success of the Avengers movie, the main timeline has been shifting the characters’ appearances toward the movie visuals: Hawkeye’s costume has changed and he’s gone from blond to brunette; the original Colonel Fury has disappeared and been replaced by his son, who looks an awful lot like a young SLJ; Coulson shows up frequently.
