I’m not sure how many people here would be at all interested in something that can be roughly labeled as post-rock/progressive metal, but if anyone is, Cloudkicker — a one man, home-recorded, independently distributed, non-touring “band” with a pretty significant following for such an entity — recently released a new album called “Subsumed”, and it is no joke. Heavy, dense, intricate, beautiful and just generally fucking impressive music.

Hmm, is our resident medical insurance expert around?

    I has a question.

I need to have a skin tag removed. Turns out Obamacare doesn’t start on Oct 1, ENROLLMENT starts on Oct 1, and coverage doesn’t start until Jan 1 2014 (California).

So I want to get this skin tag among my eyelashes removed. It’s growing rapidly and it stings and is uncomfortable, feels like something stuck in my eye.

    No insurance, of course.

Opthalmologist quotes $200 to remove it. Not bad, I can do that, I mean, it’s my eye, FFS. But then says it might need to go out to biopsy. How much will biopsy cost? THey don’t know, ask the hospital pathology lab. Christ. So I’m waiting for a callback from them. Of course they say “it depends on the medical code”. Christ. Who determines that? The doctor does! SO back to the doctor. Which medical code? I dunno, depends on what it looks like. Christ. ALL I WANNA KNOW IS HOW MUCH WILL THIS FUCKING THING COST AND CAN I EVEN AFFORD IT SOMEBODY GIVE ME A MOTHERFUCKING BALLPARK JEEEEBUS!

So, in the Bay Area, what should I expect to pay out-of-pocket for pathology lab fees to microscopically and expertly examine a tiny skin tag on my eye (probably looking for cancer cells, I’d guess)?

That is, if a biopsy is even necessary. Maybe it won’t be, and I’ll walk out of there all better and only lighter by the cost of, say, a dental filling. I can handle that. But I live in MORTAL TERROR of getting a bill for say $10k or something for some deluxe fancy biopsy I can’t afford.

Any ideas or words of wisdom?

    @fuckwit:

Here’s my experience, for what little it’s worth:

My last couple of visits to the dermatologist were paid out of pocket, since I’m currently uninsured. I have a history of basal cell carcinoma (the very best kind of skin cancer to get, if you must—slow-growing and almost never malignant!), so I have to go in regularly to get checked. The doctor biopsied a very small discoloration on my leg last autumn, and about three months later I got a bill for the biopsy that was about $300. I can’t imagine a simple skin tag would be much more than that, although in our current health-care system nothing would surprise me.

I will add that this is a perfect example of how fucked up our health-care system is and how it is impossible to “shop” for health care, in any meaningful economic sense. The last few times I have been to the dermatologist I have informed them that I’m not on insurance and need to pay cash. They never “remember” the information—they always have me down as being with the insurance company from my previous job—and it is a huge ordeal for them to come up with the amount I need to pay. And, as you discovered, it’s just as bad trying to get an idea of costs ahead of time.

The last time I went all I had was a simple body scan, where the doctor examines your skin from head to toe to see if there’s anything going on. That’s got to be about the simplest, most basic thing he does, and still it was an ordeal for them to determine the amount owed. It ended up being $155.01—I remember the specific number because the one cent was a ridiculous flourish—and even then a month or two later I got a bill for “unpaid fees” of about $75–100. WTF?

I think their whole model is built around (semi-automated) billing to insurance companies for amounts determined after the fact. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that their bureaucracy billed my old insurance company anyway, it got kicked back because I’m no longer a client, and then the rest of the bill got sent to me as an “unpaid balance due”—even though I had been prepared to pay my total bill on the day of treatment.

Needless to say, I am in the process of looking for insurance under the new Obamacare framework.

About as modern as this geezer gets: a favorite by Philip Glass (sadly, the highs and lows in the sound track seem a bit too compressed, but a much better quality audio-only version here.)

Especially in a year when the A’s are vying for the AL crown.

    Major League payrolls / records:
    New York Yankees $228,995,945 / 83-77
    Los Angeles Dodgers $216,302,909 / 92-68
    …
    Oakland $68,577,000 / 95-65
    …
    Houston $24,328,538 / 51-109

Looks like there’s a lower bound to moneyball

The Astros are singlehandedly an argument for relegation in American sports. Yes, yes, I get that the trendy thing now is to tank as hard as you can so you get the best draft picks, but they (and the Marlins and the Cubs) are an embarrassment. Somehow, the Cards and Braves have managed to consistently replenish their rosters without stripping themselves bare and tanking for half a decade.
