The Ted Cruz is showing he is a formidable force in Iowa.
Left & liberal Right are afraid of this brilliant academic, social and political leader. Just like Reagan back in the day.

Caught up on two weeks’ worth of TiVo’d stuff today. Very much liking “The Blacklist.”
The only problem I have with “The Good Wife” is that it’s on Sunday nights and in the fall in the Eastern Time Zone it gets bumped back because of football games running over (Curse you, “Heidi”!) and I have to remember to reprogram the machine to add an hour or so.
Yatsuno
Chinese food and Oregon spanked the Broonz. Watching for the Dangerman, hopefully he’s indulging in more pleasant pursuits than watching this.
Go BoSox. Also. Too.
@Keith P.: No mas burritos before bed for you young man!
Hill Dweller
The Twitter machine is telling me even the liberal MSNBC aired everything Cruz did today.
Keith P.
@srv: I had this weird Ted Cruz dream last night where he was my best friend. I was racing an F1-go-cart hybrid on the freeway, and he kept driving up in a towncar (or something like it) and hanging with me after my runs. Then it went to a flashback to us in college where Cruz had long hair and a beard, and was played by Jemaine Clement. Really strange, and I have no idea where it came from.
Valdivia
Saw a really good production of Measure for Measure today and now I am ready to collapse after having dinner with some friends who are in town. It’s still kind of cold. Also. Too.

Playing Batman Arkham Origins. It feels very similar to Arkham City with a touch of the creepy designs that Arkham Asylum was famous for.
It’s good, though some of the snow lighting looks like the city is draped in oatmeal.
It’s fascinating to see sections of Arkham City before the prison was built. Utterly fascinating.

The media horse race has already been set up: maverick underdog Cruz versus establishment hack Clinton in 2016. Be sure to stock up on sedatives.

@Yatsuno:
Just saw the preview for the special that will air next month and I can’t wait!
Pogonip
@Baud: I want a real government shutdown. No air traffic control. No border patrol. No weather service. It would last about 12 hours and from then on any Teabagger who started babbling about how we didn’t need government would be beaten to death by his enraged fellow citizens. Wouldn’t that be a wonderful world to live in?
Yatsuno
@Pogonip: Won’t matter unless Grandma doesn’t get her check. Then the wrath of the olds on the teafolk will be much to behold and they’ll be reduced to a minority party permanently pretty fast.
@MomSense: I’m delaying going home just so I can watch it with a bunch of BJers in town. I’d KILL to get theatre seats, but from what I understand those sold out in minutes. I love that they’re showing the debut in theatres though.

Upgraded the Macbooks from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and am not hating it too much except for the nonsense about scrolling. It’s a laptop that actually has to work for a living, not a silly toy, so the scrolling was fixed forthwith. Otherwise, it seems nice and solid.
Also, Gophers over the Huskers. I can die happy now…

And we weren’t even invited to the wedding??! Harrumph.

Updated the other night. It’s not as different as I’d sort of expected. I’ve noticed a few things (positive so far) but haven’t done a lot of exploring. Am so far disappointed that the Dock doesn’t show up on both my laptop screen and the large monitor when I’m using them both – I thought that was a new feature.
On a completely different note, wondering if I want to drive up to Huntington Beach to watch the Day of the Doctor as a simulcast in 3D, or just wait for later. Mr S isn’t a Whovian. Maybe my DIL would join me. My son likes the new Who well enough, but she’s the real fan.

One of the many things that pissed me off about the shutdown is that they kept the damn airports (with their many, many federal employees) open to make sure that no congressman would be inconvenienced by what congress did.

The main positive change I’ve noticed in Mavericks is that the scrollbars that got ridiculously skinny in Lion (10.7) at least now get a little fatter when you actually mouse over them, so you can actually grab the scroll thumb if you want to.
Also, Finder windows have tabs, which is a real if minor improvement.
There are a few application incompatibilities. They moved the Perl library in a manner that breaks Golly, the cellular automaton program (there’s a workaround that involves command-line fiddling).
The apps that come with the OS have generally gotten a flatter, more stripped-down appearance with less graphical frippery.
I haven’t played around much with the revised iPhoto or iMovie. I did poke at Garage Band a little, which seems to have a typically streamlined user interface but has not changed much in features. I heard that some podcast-related features were actually taken out.

Does anybody have fun Halloween plans? Our town’s block party was tonight but it was unseasonably cold and we’re expecting heavy rain Thursday, so Halloween 2013 is shaping up as a washout.
On a Halloween-y subject, I just read travel writer Gunnar Hansen’s “Chainsaw Confidential.”. Before he was a travel writer, it turns out, Mr. Hansen was the masked chainsaw wielding cannibal who chased poor Marilyn Burns over half of Texas. This is a well-written look at moviemaking in general and at what can happen when artists, however unintentionally, catch lightning in a bottle.

Rare public airing of the worries. My adopted daughter (canine type) Boo is close to 14 as far as we can tell. It’s starting to show, and right now I could just weep anticipating the time. It doesn’t help that my first dog, her predecessor Scooby had a horrid fast death when I was alone, and by the time I got him 5 minutes away to the vet, he was gone. Why THE F*(K do we do this to ourselves?
She’s scheduled for the vet Monday, but man, we all know it’s downhill from here, and it hurts.

I upgraded from 10.6.something a couple of nights ago. Mavericks is fine so far, aside from the scrolling direction (which I immediately reversed), disappearing scrollbars (which I turned on again–I like a constant visual indication of where I am in a window), and breaking one of my settings in Safari (for handling PDFs–haven’t figured it out yet).
@Matt McIrvin:
They don’t get fatter if you have scrollbars always visible. That’s an odd usability/consistency bug. Also, if they’re not visible, you need to use two-finger scrolling to see them. That’s another minor problem for new users.

Of course now I’m going to check the movie listings.

Our campus showed The Dead Zone one evening. My buddy and I had a few shots before going to see it. During one of the scare scenes (deputy steps out of a door along a darkened corridor) the entire theater jumped up, obscuring the screen, except for my buddy and I. As everyone else was dropping back to their seats, only then did my buddy jump in delayed response. I didn’t even twitch.

Omnes Omnibus
@ruemara: The movie is about the horrors of war and how people whose career choice is based around saving lives deal with being a part of it.
Ruckus
@ruemara:
Like a lot of movies the middle is not the whole story. As Omnes says this is about war, death, human destruction and how people deal with it. A lot of times they use dark humor to cope. The movie showed that and it was one of the good things about it. The old saying that war is hell is wrong. The correct saying is war is war and hell is hell and of the two I’ll pick hell. War brings out the worst and the best of people. Not to show that would have been dishonest. As most war movies up to that time had been. I was in the service during Vietnam when the movie came out. Most army bases would not show it and many navy bases as well. There was quite a controversy on the navy base I was on but they showed it anyway. Probably because it was about the army. The only people in the theater who didn’t like it were lifers. The rest of us saw it for what it was, a brilliant discourse about the cost and stupidity of war. Please try watching the rest of it with two things in mind. First what the movie is really about. Second, notice that women play a vital role in the movie and the pranks are very selective and why they are done at all. People in close quarters in war lose some of the objectivity that we like to see in society. Living in a life and death situation on a day to day basis does that.
