Can’t sleep, mainly because I started watching this HBO documentary (Legendary Nights- the Tale of Gatti-Ward) on the Gatti-Ward fights, which were hands down the greatest fights I have ever seen. You can have your Mayweather and Tyson and other high-profile fighters, I’ll take guys like that over anyone.
I watched everyone of those fights live, and I still get chills thinking about them.

You should’ve seen the Melendez-Sanchez fight two weeks ago. Insane.
Steeplejack
Not a fan of the sweet science, I’m afraid.
I ended up going on quite the lengthy rant about The Counselor two posts down. That’s my big contribution for the night. Tl;dr version: miss it if you can.
I’m going to finish watching White Collar, obsessively mash the “Refresh” button here a few times and then hit the rack.

Had no idea Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed were married. Lordy, all that crazy, amazing talent under one roof. Laurie’s thoughts on Lou.

@trollhattan:
I read that earlier and read it as Loni Anderson. Was very confused at first.

the Gatti-Ward fights, which were hands down the greatest fights I have ever seen.
That’s a bold statement.

” I have ever seen.”
Hi, I’m a conditional statement.

Enjoyed some of Laurie Anderson’s work a lot. Never could stand Lou Reed. Sorry.

Late night Chinese with a Dawg. I just lent him my car. Please tell me I’m not a complete idiot here.

Little Floyd Mayweather is generally considered a douche around Grand Rapids. Funny, because everyone loves his dad and uncles. But the kid is a genuinely great boxer.
Maybe a bit before your time, Cole, but here’s a great one: Danny “Little Red” Lopez vs. Salvador Sanchez. Loved watching Lopez fights when I was a kid.
Keith P.
You should have seen Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo. It’s easily found on youtube, and it’s incredible (at least watch the 10th round). The other two fights in the trilogy weren’t nearly as good (neither fighter was the same after the first). In terms of trilogies, I think the Israel Vasquez-Rafael Marquez fights were better as a unit than Gatti-Ward, as both fighters were top-level fighters showing more skills (and power) than Gatti-Ward.

@Hal:
I read it as Louie Anderson.

@Keith P.: vasquez-marquez are the greatest fights i have ever seen because they were genuinely great boxers on top of the mayhem they inflicted in the ring. Hearns-Hagler, however, is the gold standard for anything boxing. (Pryor-Arguello was a classic too)
eric
@Keith P.: I remember when showtime ( i think) showed them back to back to back and i remember callign my father and saying “I know these have already happened, but you have to see THIS.”

Gatti-Ward is two clumsy white guys beating each other up.
The best?
These three guys going against each other.
Hagler-Hearns-Duran
Saw the Hagler vs Leonard fight at the Liberty theater in Jersey City, surrounded by hard core fans who payed 40 bucks to get in (back in the 80’s that wasn’t cheap). We all walked in talking about how Hagler was going to kick Leonard’s ass, walked out chanting Suger Ray! I’ve watched the fight many times, still can’t say who won.

Huh. I thought she was dating David Byrne.

Jeez, I think I might have done a little work on that show — was on an HBO crew that trailed Ward around one day back in the summer.

@trollhattan: Some years ago my daughter was waiting tables at a small resturant in Portland, Maine. I’m not quite sure why she recognized Laurie Anderson as a customer one night, but she did. Somewhat uncharacteristically, she asked for an autograph. Andreson obliged, but shared a laugh with her dining mate, who said “Well, that’s a first!” He wound up paying the check, signing “Lou Reed.”

Gatti’s best fight was the one with Wilson Rodriguez. The greatest fight I ever saw (the fight that many boxing experts consider the best ever) was Ali-Frazier (the Thrilla in Manilla) on closed circuit tv in 1975. @eric: The first round of Hagler-Hearns was the best 3 minutes of boxing I’ve ever seen.@The Pale Scot: 4 guys. Hagler-Hearns-Duran- & Sugar Ray Leonard. The 80’s were loaded with great welterweights and middleweights. However, the best decade of boxing in my lifetime was the 70’s, with all the great heavyweights- Ali, Frazier, Holmes, Norton, Foreman, Quarry, Shavers, & Lyle.
