New scienterrific theory says that King Tutankhamun died in a chariot crash. No mention of an inscription translated as “Live fast, die young, make a beautiful corpse”, but that would seem exquisitely suited to the cultural context…
In the Atlantic, Alexander Huls explains “The Ender’s Game Movie Is Secretly a Defense of Millennials”:
… A stigma, most recently exemplified by Joel Stein’s controversial Time magazine cover story “The Me Me Me Generation,” has developed around the group of people born approximately between 1980 and 2000. They’re hounded by the perception that they are “lazy, entitled narcissists,” financial drains on their parents, and exhibitive of unjustified confidence and unorthodox thinking that makes them affronts to Boomer models of career paths and workplaces. Even Millennials virtues that have the potential to “save us all” (as Stein put it)—like their tech prowess—are frequently treated as problems that need solving…
Ender resembles Millennials in other ways, too. He is innately comfortable with tech gadgetry. He is perpetually connected to and through digital devices. He sees email as an inalienable right (the film calling it email, which the book doesn’t, is a telling contemporary update), fills downtime with games on a tablet synched to his subconscious, “hacks” computer consoles to send text messages to fellow students during class, and learns best through video not reading… and demonstrates a leadership style that (even more so than in the novel) supports free-flowing brainstorming without hierarchical boundaries.
What makes Ender’s Game a true Millennial story is that it sees these as valuable attributes. Boomers tend to represent Gen Y’s virtues simultaneously as faults (Millennials are great at tech! Millennials are narcissistic and distracted workers because of tech!) but the film understands the impulses behind them…
And a college professor gleefully shares with the NYTimes how he tortured his students:
… “I want you to send a text to a friend,” I told students in my course, “The Search for Intimacy in the Age of Facebook.” “It has to be a text that shares your true feelings about something this friend has done or said that upset you but that you never said anything about. And you can’t spend a lot of time agonizing over the wording. Say what you mean and hit ‘send.’ ”
Their eyes bugged wider than when we had talked about hookups. “I’m really hating you right now,” one student murmured, half-jokingly, her eyes locked in the oncoming headlights.
This dilating of my students’ apertures, I’ve come to believe, is exactly what they need both in and outside the classroom if they are going to have the kind of success and fulfillment they desire. That’s because the parts of their lives that truly matter to many of them during college — high marks and solid “A” social lives — are undermined by a widespread, constricting social anxiety that comes, paradoxically, from two of their greatest pleasures: texting and social media. A small but growing body of evidence suggests that excessive social media use can lead to an unhealthy fixation on how one is perceived and an obsessive competitiveness. Perhaps not surprisingly, this angsting can also lead to an unhealthy quest for perfection, a social perfection, which breeds an aperture-narrowing conformity….

I was explaining to someone the other day that the subtext of “The Hunger Games” is basically, Kids, the adults fucked up the world you have to live in, so you’re going to have to do better than they did and save yourselves. Given the success of the books and the movie (my 13-year-old niece was Katniss for Halloween this year), I think the message resonated.

My daughter was born in 1987. She has some health issues, yet works overnight shifts as an ICU nurse. She does not live in my basement. It is wonderful that folks like to categorize all millenials, but it is every bit as wrong as characterizing ObamaCare by the small number who will pay more for healthcare. Many millenials are useful contributors to society. These generalizations annoy me no end.

Yes no one my age ever talks to people we all just text and facebook. All day. Of course this is all just old people bitching about about the kids on their lawn and has happened reliably since the days of ancient Greece whee Socrates complained about writing making the kids lazy and Plato bemoaning that the kids didn’t respect their elders.

There’s an election going on…so paying attention to that. Maybe exercise in a little bit.
I would’ve thought the margin in VA would’ve started closing by now. I forget when Obama flipped it on Romney last year. I know it was later (think it was around the 70% mark)…but given that T-Mac should (supposedly) be outperforming, it’s still disconcerting to see a 7% deficit with 40% in.
That said, I think we have the LG race in the bag (Northam is already 2% up on the crazy pastor). Obenshain is up nearly 10%…would really hate to lose that one to a social extremist.

That’s exactly what happens. The urban counties don’t have enough voting infrastructure to carry the load, whereas the rural counties are determined to make sure every slope-headed ridge-runner can vote with ease. And be counted. It’s odd. It’s almost like the VA state government only liked a certain type of person voting or something.

Haven’t shared this over here yet but John’s posts about Steve made me think of it … our Maine Coon, Quinn, was diagnosed with lymphona a few weeks ago. They say cats actually do lymphoma really well .. and if a cat has to have cancer, this is the one you want them to have. So he’s on chemo, and high-dose steroids, and anti-nausea medication AND now he’s on a liver protector. Poor fella gets a pill rammed down his throat about every 3 hours and I feel so bad for him. He’s doing a little better, actually, though the liver pills are think are a problem.
The problem with veterinary medicine is so much of it is based on human medicine. Quinn’s liver pills are human sized and he gags every time I have to give them to him.

Tired of all the hating on younger generations. AFAICT they have got their shit together a lot better than mine did. We were total assholes, and were proud of it, it was a RIGHT, it was PUNK, it was GANGSTA, it was MONEY. I think my generation was severely fucked up, and I think the boomers before us had serious problems too, though I respect them for the major, epochal social changes (civil rights, environment, peace, music, art) that they made happen… before they went all yuppie anyway.
These kids today are better, I think, than we GenX’ers were. They’re growing up in an interconnected, public, living-in-a-fishbowl world in which they CANNOT get away with being assholes. They get shunned and shamed for shit, so they’re just nicer, overall. Not quite Canadians but they’re approaching that asymtotically.
The white folks among the young generation are also more liberated and open to other races, ethnicities, genders-and-gender-continuums, sexual orientations, cultures, etc, than we ever were.
I think they’re better people, overall, in as far as it’s possible to make any generalizations, which isn’t very scientific. But that’s my perception of them.

Having a GOPer governor in NJ meant a lot to Dole, Bush, and Romney.
Or something.

@Elizabelle: I was waiting for TWiB to post.
Eventually I had some actual (local) news to report, but Cole beat me to the front page, because I stopped to clear the moderation cache.

@fuckwit:
Please stop with the fiction that the baby boomers made civil rights happen.
The oldest boomers were still in high school when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act. The silent generation did most of the heavy lifting of the civil rights movement.

@Cacti:
Of course. Remember when McCain not knowing how many houses he had was bad news for Obama?

Frankly, I think Enders game the movie is a great movie for 15 year olds of all generations. Play video games and take karate lessons and you too can be a hero and save the world.

@Chyron HR: I expect to wake up to the Great Liberal Freakout, wondering how you were able to call this.

@Elizabelle: I’m just aghast at exurban hell Prince William County voting Democratic. Wonders never cease.
When I lived there… well… who even wants to recall that election.
MANASSAS home o’ da racists even voted D today. lol
I guess we can blame VRE. Transit is a known vector for voters who want “things”. Look out, Stafford County, you’re next!! Own-goal, Paul Weyrich, own-goal: spin in your grave you papal pustule, spin!

@Chris:
It was a notion that always struck me as being halfway between genius and stupid; like he grokked that whole internet thing, even that whole blogger thing, but the idea that one or two bloggers could alone just be so genius and persuasive that they could anonymously change the entire political landscape… well, it was so “mad jobber” (the complaint lobbed about Batman, that his power is to make all of his enemies suck at fighting) that I had trouble believing that bit.
YES I CAN BELIEVE ANGRY SPACE WASPS WITH ANSIBLES WHO TELEPATHICALLY HACK COMPUTER SIMULATIONS, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

@Another Holocene Human: Prince William County isn’t what it used to be, and I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief at that.

Woot woot in Virginia and NYC.
Only stuff on my ballot was a couple of school bonds. I voted NOT ONLY YES, BUT HELL YES.

@David Koch: VA is full of FYIGM federal employees and federal contractors’ employees so there must have been people (like Mr PWC Muslim in the PWC article) who switched their votes (in his case due to the summer of hate in 2010 or maybe it was some of its precursors but I personally feel like summer of hate was the point of no return) and I’m wondering if GWB administration just generally sucking and the sucking becoming more obvious as time went on had something to do with it. Useless wars chewing up soldiers and spitting them out also, too. A lot of folks got spitting mad at Clinton for closing bases and basically attempting (but not succeeding) at right-sizing the MIC, but Bush was a lying liar who lied and everybody but the big defense contractors paid dearly for that. Oh, it is so so sweet to see those closest to the whole “gov’t can’t work and we’ll prove it” parade rejecting it and them with votes.

@Keith G:
I take it you missed STAR TREK III.

@Another Holocene Human: wait, the buggers telepathically hack the simulation? Is that in one of the sequels?

I will respectfully disagree. My friends and their children are horse owning families and we all volunteer our time and our horses to teach special needs children to ride and care for the horses.
We are 5 adults, 8 children and 9 horses. The kids range in age from 7 – 23 and the kids all volunteer their horses and ponies to help other children. Plus they assist in the classes as well.
The younger children help the younger special needs children and their siblings to play and socialize as well and they have fun doing it.
They never adjust their feelings downwards, they just accept these other kids as kids.
We adults teach everyone the same safety lessons for dealing with horses and my special needs kids are now teaching other kids these same lessons.
