I guess “kitten haters” was a much smaller voting demographic than Lhoti realized. Damn those unskewed polls!
I love the expression on Arthur’s face with his new mommy. Ahh, this is the life! You just know he’s purring with everything he’s got.

Has anyone else been having slow-load problems with the new design at Steve Benen’s place? If yes, and if there’s a fix, what is it?

Interesting to note that the newly elected mayors of Boston and New York are both outspoken supporters of labor and of labor unions. I’m so old that I can remember when one of our political parties was famous for being a friend of the working man.
@Mnemosyne: Arthur knows very well how to wrap his human around his paw.

@dmsilev: That’ll be me the Sat after this. A “leap” day will be necessary I’m afraid; I find staying up all night 2 days beforehand is the only way to be tired enough to shift my sleep pattern for a 3am wakeup. Blechh.

@Mike E: It’s not my favorite way of working, not by a long shot. Don’t have much choice though; my coworkers and I have time on a very expensive (and tightly scheduled) piece of equipment, so we use what we are given 24/7. Thankfully, my shift is almost over. Unthankfully, I get to turn around and do the same damn thing tomorrow. And day after… (we run until Tuesday).
Every once in a while I have to do that (3 am wakeup) to catch a flight or early train. Turns me into a complete zombie for the entire day. But I’ve never tried the “leap day” routine, and I fear I’m too old to do so now. I would epic-fail around 2 am, barely respond to my 6 am alarm, and be a zombie for THREE days.

Returned from Voodoo Music Fest in New Orleans. Beautiful venue in city park by art museum. Had fine weather all 3 days. Now I know what people were talking about when they raved about Pearl Jam as a live act. Wow! Also saw Nine Inch Nails, The Cure (Robert Smith in all his mopey glory), Paramore (Haley Williams was on fire), Gaslight Anthem, Macklemore (& Ryan Lewis!), Delta Rae, Shovels & Rope, Boize Noize, New Found Glory, Cults, A Silent Film, The Scorseses, Reignwolf, Flow Tribe, Moon Taxi. Youngblood Hawke, etc. etc.
Next year Halloween will be on Friday. I expect it to be pretty wild that Friday.
In other news, I’m trying to do a few things that scare me right now, so I volunteered to teach my co-workers how to knit. Right now, I have about 10 of them interested. Yikes!

Any Marylanders in the house? I’m going to a forum for the four candidates for Maryland Attorney General in Baltimore tonight. If there’s any interest, I’ll give impressions in the next open thread (or in this thread or whatever). The four announced candidates are all Democrats, so I don’t think we’re in too much danger of pulling a Virginia.

I saw Ender’s Game today. It looks like a good, thoughtful movie, certainly no mere shoot-em-up. I saw nary a hint of Orson Scott Card’s infamous homophobia. I did see his name in the producer credits, though, so I’m skeptical of the story that he’s not seeing a penny from the movie.
Hadn’t read the book, so I can’t yet judge the movie’s fidelity to it, but I will. Among movie reviewers who have read it, there seems to be a consensus that the movie oversimplifies the plot (but then fans always say that); also, that it softpedals the book’s (and Ender’s) violent side, among other things by casting a kid rather older than Ender is in the book.
@Amir Khalid: I hate the Ender Universe that Card has created, its ethos is the mirror image of the Trek verse. Every race/ethnicity has its own planet. Ender’s Game is not so bad but some other books in the series are nonsensical.
ETA: Weak female characters, also too.

@Xantar: I would be interested in hearing how things are shaking out.
I knit lots of stuff! Many hats, because they’re quick and easy and fun to make. Right now, I’m making this fancy-looking cape to wear to a big event on Sunday — it was super easy to make because it’s big yarn on big needles but will look very impressive.
I go back and forth between complicated/long projects and short/quick ones because I get bored easily (ADHD) so I end up with a million UFOs (unfinished objects).
I come from a crafty family, so I feel weird not having some kind of craft project going on. I tried crochet, but I suck at it — everything ended up a trapezoid. I used to needlepoint and cross-stitch, but my carpal tunnel issues mean I can’t hold the tiny needles for very long anymore.
My mom’s friend built a needlepointed dollhouse — as in, she needlepointed all of the walls with plastic canvas and then built a whole dollhouse out of it so her granddaughter could use it to play with her Barbies. Now that’s a project.
I don’t know of any knitters (ADHD or not) that don’t have many unfinished projects! I don’t think you qualify as a serious knitter if you don’t have at least 2 or 3 projects left to finish but you just can’t resist starting a new one.
