I’d have more to say. But I’m posting via mobile, which sucks big green gators. Mississippi State is playing Texas A&M tough from behind. Looking forward to ‘Bama-LSU. (Geaux Tigers!) Discuss whatever.

Can’t get into football this year. Between the suckage that is exemplified by both Pitt and the Steelers, the latest locker room nastiness and all the brain injury stuff, I just can’t take joy in it the way I used to. Waiting for the Pens game to start tonight and Pitt basketball to start the real season.
Joseph Nobles
Geaux Tigers? Oh, man. You’re going to have a bad time.

Am doing Saturday “stuff,” which always sounds more interesting at work than when actually doing it. Need lawn goats–two should do.
Amused that below the Tunch “Feed” poster is an ad for plus-size fashions. Tunch lives.
Betty Cracker
@Joseph Nobles: You’re almost certainly right. And in a way I want an undefeated ‘Bama to crush whatever the basketball conferences offer up as an opponent in the championship game like a rotten walnut. Because I’m an SEC homer. But I like LSU.
Violet
Going out to a movie. First time in months–maybe six or nine months. I mostly watch movies at home these days.

Somehow, I don’t think Coach Hoke is the answer for Michigan. My Wolverines are a sad bunch right now.
raven
Let’s see if the Hokie’s D can keep em in it!

Trying to decide whether or not I have enough $$$ to go see Mike Doughty perform tomorrow night. Le sigh.

This will turn your stomach —
Texas prosecutor to serve 10 days for innocent man’s 25-year imprisonment
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/nov/08/texas-prosecutor-ken-anderson-michael-morton-trial
Anderson faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted of tampering with evidence in the 1987 murder trial of Michael Morton, who wrongly spent nearly 25 years in prison.
Sounds like they deliberately took a dive to let this scumbag off easy.

It makes me a little bit sad when Michigan, Nebraska, and Florida are mediocre football teams, and I don’t even have a dog in that hunt.
FSM knows I would love to see AL go down, though, and I don’t have a dog in that hunt either except for my contempt for all things AL other than my brother and the food and hospitality.
SarahT
Laundry and PBS. Boy do I ever feel old (not “Matlock” marathon old, but close enough…).

Just got a call from my aunt that my 94-year old grandma had to be taken to the hospital. They think she has an infection or possibly a blood clot in her leg.
Do not have a good feeling about this. :-(

@raven:
Canes go 80 yards on the second play. That theory is off to a bad start.
raven
@tybee: When does the line jump the roller?
The Penn I’m looking at is $159.
I’ve never paid that much for a reel
It’s nearly as much as a day on a charter instead of a headboat,
I surf fish a lot for the week I’m down there but only go once a year
khead
@raven:
Uh, no. Just shoot me.
raven
@Thlayli: It wasn’t a theory it was a hope.

@raven:
the line only jumps off the roller during a “slack line” situation with a loop.
doesn’t happen often and only with no tension on the line.
think fish running at you and the curl in the line causes a loop that jumps off.
then think how you get that line back on the roller when line is peeling off.
it doesn’t happen often and it wouldn’t stop me from buying the reel, especially if i was only gonna use it for surf.
$159 isn’t too bad for a decent reel these days but shop carefully.
i own a bunch of penn slammers and even the small ones (260 size) push that cost.
go for it.
YOLO.

I hope you do! Man, I love listening to that guy sing.

@Violet:
What are you going to see?
I have passes to see “The Book Thief” this Wednesday before it opens widely in Atlanta. The young star, as well as the novelist and the director, will be at the screening to make remarks and take questions.
But mostly, I don’t “go” to see movies. I wait until they’re released on DVD (I’m old-fashioned that way) and watch them on lazy weekend mornings.
SiubhanDuinne
@SarahT: Who is this young whippersnapper “Matlock” of whom you speak?

‘The Last Emperor” is on our PBS station tonight at 9PM

Thank God for football or nobody in this country would even know that Mississippi has a state university. I wonder if the GOP down there even funds the education part of the place?
SarahT
@efgoldman: No idea who watches them; Maybe the same people who listen to Celine Dion and Josh Groban ? Ugh – if you’ve let yourself sink that low you might as well just give up.
SarahT
@SiubhanDuinne: heh

@shelly: And it’s not Pledge Week, woohoo !
WereBear
@Violet: Hope it’s a good one!
Mr WereBear and I catch up with movies through HBO or Amazon Prime. He can’t get out much from his chronic illness.
And in a PSA spirit, we’ve discovered he’s a mutant. (Yeah, Wolverine. We kind both wish.) Seriously, he has a mutation on his MTFHR gene. Which could have an impact on his illness. So he’s taking methylated B’s and feeling crappy which is a good sign that his methylation cycle is working.
Mentioned because it affects perhaps 1 out of 3. Those are serious odds! I’m awaiting my own results.
Go Obamacare! (cuz’ I’m an Obot.)

Gold Diggers of 1933 on TCM. Loves me some Guy Kibbee and Warren William. (Ginger Rogers and Joan Blondell are OK too.)

And 80% of them have the same damn plot. Career-driven young woman (usually in New York but sometimes on the West coast) is forced to return to her quaint home town ’cause a family member is ill/to save the family farm/has to take custody of her three suddenly orphaned nieces. There she reconnects with her old school sweetheart (who, despite being handsome and hunky, is suprisingly still unmarried.) Also reconnects with all those old-fashioned values she forgot in her souless climb up the corporate ladder. Cue the snowfall on Christmas Eve.

Saw “All is Lost” this week. Highly recommend it.
Robert Redford as guy sailing alone in Indian Ocean who runs into trouble.
95% of spoken dialogue is in the first four minutes.
Credits were interesting.

Anybody else see “12 Years a Slave”?
Hard to watch, but worth seeing.

@Cacti: Hope your grandma is okay. I have a couple of old grandmas too, and it’s scary as hell when they have a medical issue. It’s NORMAL, of course, but shocking somehow when they aren’t 100% themselves. Best of luck.

@shelly:
It would be fun to take that set-up and write a “Murder of the Week” made for TV movie.

@gogol’s wife:
I love Warren William.
We never existed in the same plain of time.
Never heard of the guy until last year, but he’s addictive.

The streak is now at 61 but it should be zero. The St. Cloud State Huskies! Huskies! Huskies! played hard and aggressive. The Gopher defense can look really shaky against a strong forecheck. Give ’em time to make decisions and they’ll pick you apart, even with three freshmen back there, but pressure gets to them. St. Cloud deserved to win this game and with three minutes left it looked like they were going to. Then Dani Cameranesi tipped Baylee Gillanders shot into the net at 17:58 and then the Huskies let Milica McMillen skate in unmolested a minute later and she buried it for the 4-3 win.
North Dakota next week. The Gophers need to play a hell of a lot better than they did today for the streak to reach 63.

Alabama’s inability to pressure the QB without a stunt or blitz is going to hurt them at some point this season.
SarahT
@Elizabelle: Just gut-wrenching. But I really think everyone over age 14 – or maybe 16 ? – should have to see it. And confederate flag-loving morons should have to see it with their eyes propped open, “Clockwork Orange”-style, so they can’t look away during the most brutal parts.
WereBear
Ack, bad link. MTFHR gene and health.

Wtf

Thinking of you.
Never know what to think about 94 year olds. If in good shape, wish them more time in health.
If not, wish them a peaceful transition.
Have a wonderful 89-going on 60 year old friend.

It was interesting how some of the sympathetic seeming non-slave characters just refused to let their thoughts reach the logical conclusion. They just didn’t want to go there.
Have the book. Going to crack it soon and see again to see how they adapted it.

@SarahT:
“12 Years” was actually more brutal than “Django Unchained”, a Tarantino movie. He’s good at redirecting attention and leavening with humor.
In this one, you saw the blood mist fly when skin was flayed with a whip.
I wonder if it will find its audience, as praised as it is.
John O
@efgoldman:
Premature jubilation, say I. Looks like LSU can run the ball a little. They just might want to think about hanging on to it for a full series.
SarahT
@Elizabelle: Haven’t seen “Django” – not much of a Tarantino fan. But I can’t imagine any depiction of violence being much more real and painful than “12 Years” – so haunting and overwhelming. I should try to read the book, too.
John O
@efgoldman:
I was just a kid in the ’60’s, and barely knew Joe Willy went to ‘Bama, but he was a true childhood hero of mine as a Jet.
And LSU gets on the board, and takes the lead. 2 turnovers and a lead is a good place to be.
Anoniminous
@shelly:
New Plot:
Career-driven young woman returns to her hick home town ’cause a family member died from a overdose of library paste. There she reconnects with her old school sweetheart who is still as dumb as a brick – but who has achieved alcoholism – and has been married, divorced, married, divorce, married, divorced, and is on the run for not paying support for the kids he sired. Also reconnects with all those old-fashioned values: bigotry, small mindedness, ignorance, and cat-fight vindictiveness that caused her to run away screaming in the first place. Cue airplane taking off on Christmas Eve to the tune of the Hallelujah Chorus with a mushroom cloud rising in the background.
Anoniminous
@efgoldman:
It’s a Christmas story. It’s supposed to be heart-warming.
Elizabelle
@Anoniminous:
I’d pay to see that movie.
SiubhanDuinne
@Elizabelle:
Reason enough that I will not see it.
A Humble Lurker
@shelly:
I swear, I could almost not be disgusted by those things if just those parts were not in there. How come there’s never a story about a country bumpkin who goes to the city, gets a job instead of marrying at 18 and becoming a mother at 19 and finds fulfillment that way?
Elizabelle
@SiubhanDuinne:
I don’t mean to keep you away from a very good movie.
The blood mist was about the worst of it, viscerally.
The plot, though, was as horrifying as being in a science fiction movie and realizing you’re the food animal. And it really happened.
gogol's wife
@Elizabelle:
Have you seen Gold Diggers of 1933? He is absolutely the funniest actor in the film, and he has stiff competition. He’s not usually thought of as a comic actor, but this time my husband and I were marvelling at how good he was in this. “Peabody, you’re disgusting!”

@WereBear:
