Ken Burns: Bill De Blasio Has Agreed To Settle 10-Year-Old Central Park Five Case
During a visit to HuffPost Live Tuesday to discuss his new initiative “Learn the Address,” documentary filmmaker Ken Burns gave an update on the ten-year-old Central Park Five civil suit and told host Josh Zepps that New York City’s new mayor will finally settle the case.
Burns’ 2012 documentary “The Central Park Five” tells the story of five juveniles convicted in 1990 of raping a jogger in Central Park. In 2002, the convictions of the five defendants were vacated when another man confessed to the crime. The following year, the Central Park Five filed a civil suit against the City of New York for their wrongful convictions that, after a decade, has yet to be resolved.
“Bill de Blasio, the mayor-elect, has agreed to settle this case, and though this is justice delayed way too long, and that is justice denied, [they] will not only be exonerated … but they will have justice, they will see some closure, they will be able to be made whole,” Burns said.
Burns joined HuffPost Live last year before the film’s release with one of the exonerated members of the Central Park Five. Burns said then of New York City’s refusal to settle the 10-year-old case, “the city has put molasses into the system,” and that 10 years later “this is still an open wound that we continue to pick the scab on.”

I love it when the weather gets a little chilly: I can drag out all my “fleecies,” the comfortable warm fuzzy things for lounging around in. Like being in PJs all day.
A “little chilly” for me is 40s-50s during the day. At night? I only go out if I gotta, once the merc drops below 40.
Except when it snows. Then I go out and make snow angels. I did a face-down snow angel once, just to see what it was like. Every pore in my face snapped shut so hard you could almost hear it. My cats at the time (Jazz and Ariel, of beloved memory) were watching and trying to figure out what Crazy Human Mom was up to now.

@Ash Can: So some total winner out on Phoenix’s west side went nuts and killed his grandmother. Then crossed the city to the east side, went to an elementary school, and carjacked a car with a kid in it (mom was running inside to get the younger kid and the older kid was in the car). Got about two miles away before the police stopped them. Kid is safe. I am freaked out.
Ironically, they had enclosed all their exterior circulation two years ago, and instituted the policy after Newtown that every visitor to the campus had to go through the office to check in. So this mom didn’t want to deal with the hassle and left her older kid outside.

I just got back from the vet…again. After almost killing my cat. His diabetes diagnosis seemed to be premature (sure, AFTER I spent $200 on the insulin bottle – yeah, you read that correctly).
Seems the infection he had was messing with his pancreas. I’ve been testing his glucose, but since it was over 300 all weekend, I thought I’d give his ear a rest this morning (that’s where you lance for blood) and gave him his prescribed dose (since only control freaks like myself test their cats)..6 hours later, he was so low he collapsed on the floor. Tested his blood- scary low. Corn syrup around his gums and rushed to the vet. By the time we got there – 10 whole minutes – he was up, around and yowling at the vet…I’m sure telling him what an idiot I am. The vet told me I did all the right things.
Someone should probably test my blood pressure. Tomorrow, when I”m more up for it, I’ll put the question to you smart people – any of you have a cat with transient diabetes and how did you handle it? But until then, sleepytime tea and a hot bath for me
p,s. A Steve interlude is just what I needed.

@Omnes Omnibus: Phoenix has many neighborhoods like that. It’s one of the weirder things about this city that is not really typical—some very nice, posh neighborhoods are separated by one little street from really scary, sketchy places. I used to live in midtown PHX, and in a pretty nice area. Up-and-coming gentrifying, houses started going for just under a million bucks a couple of years after I moved out. @2liberal:
It might _seem_ like that (my wife leans that way), but that is totally not true. The odds of your child, or really any child, being abducted are ridiculously low.
I found this info on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website:
To help put those numbers in perspective, the US Census estimates about 308 million people in the US in 2010, and 23.5% are under 18. That means almost 72.6 million kids.
Percentage wise, 797,500 missing out of 72.6m is .0025, or one-quarter of one percent.
For those missing kids – I think that includes runaways, kids who didn’t come home one night and the parents didn’t know where they are, and other things like that.
I’m not trying to minimize the need to be careful and vigilant with your kids (I have 5), but we all need to be aware of how fast stories like this fly around the world – you can hear about things like this minutes after it happens. Because they are heard frequently, people assume abductions are happening more than they did “when we were kids” (can’t find a cite for that). We should probably be more worried about car accidents, sports accidents, or drug addiction.
Wow, that turned out to be pretty long.
