Watching the Pens game with Walt, and we both agree there is something really wrong with Rosie. She was reacting very well to the prednisone, but there is just something wrong with her and I think we need to do some x-rays and bloodwork.
What is everyone else up to?
Betty Cracker
Still working — clearing the inbox so I can take Thanksgiving week off. Poor Rosie. I hope she is okay!
PigInZen
Dang man, 2013 is still shitty for you.
Yatsuno
Poor Rosiepuppeh. I hope it’s just something benign like an upset tummy.
Three hours away from a blessed week off. I don’t think the Who get-together is gonna happen though I gotta drop CaseyL a message here soon.
Comrade Jake
“My problem this semester is I have a girlfriend, and those take a lot of time” – a student in my office today, explaining why he hasn’t been adequately prepared for the midterms
Aji
Cole, what kind of symptoms is she showing? Pred can create secondary effects (one of ours is on it), and if she’s reacting to it, there are alternatives out there that should be less hard on her system. Give her a kiss on the head for me, poor little girl.
[Sigh] we just had one of our younger rescues DX’d with diabetes a couple of days ago. BG checks, insulin twice daily, new diet, various supplements, and a valiant attempt to prove wrong the vet’s prediction of full blindness within two months. And our 14.5-year-old big guy almost decided to leave us last night. I was up most of the night with him and then having to keep close watch on him all day.
Add all that to two horses with founder flares thanks to the weather, and not a good few days here, either.
Elizabelle
Hope Miss Rosie is right as rain soon. Worrying about her now!
Violet
So sorry to hear about Rosie. What seems off about her? Could her dose of prednisone be too high or not high enough? Steroids make me hungry and kind of hyper–maybe dogs have unexpected reactions too? Hope she’s okay.
@Comrade Jake: He’s not wrong…
kc
Oh no. I hope it’s nothing too serious.
Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader
Prolly gonna hit a bar or two here in an hour or so when a friend’s flight comes in at 10. I got one day tomorrow to get all my shit done because I gotta go up to NYC Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday and then I’ll have Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday off which is the longest span of time I’ve had off in two years.
khead
Trying to get caught up on work so I can go to NC and help with my bro’s recovery whenever he gets released from the hospital.
Today marks 10 days out from his having an aneurysm. He is very, very, very lucky so far in that he can walk and talk normally, but he is in a shitload of pain and basically sleeps all the time.
WereBear
@khead: That is quite the challenge, but he seems to have dodged some massive issues so far; may it continue.
Sorry to hear about Rosie. After all, you don’t know how old she is, really. It’s been my experience that is a tough call for vets to make.
Juju
@khead: Holy moly!! I hope things continue to improve for your brother. When he recovers have him buy you a Poweball ticket. Where in NC?
Cassidy
The commercials seem to tell me that tequila and rum are trying to market themselves as spirits to be drunk straight. Is that the new thing in bars now?
Gravenstone
Halfway through a semi-expected double shift. Then waiting until 0001 hours when my biling period rolls over to restart a beta patch because the damned thing was so large, it ate through my meager bandwidth allotment for November.
Hopefully Rosie is only dealing with something easily treated, with a minimum of side effects.
Anne Laurie
Cole, the heating system recently started running all day at your house? What’s the indoor humidity like? Our oldest rescue has also been acting crazy this week, I think because the dry house air / damp outdoors are making his skin itch & his joints ache. Last winter we had to put him on prednisone for a couple months to stop him chewing holes in his skin, but maybe Rosie needs her dosage recalculated?
Dee Loralei
Poor Rosie. Hopefully it’s just the meds and a new dosage or different drug will make her all better.
@Aji: Hope things get better for you too.
For me, I’m gonna kick off my shoes, grab a beer a dog or two and maybe a cat if she’s feeling sociable and plunk down in front of the tv for the Dr Who special. I gots kickoff at 11, so need to make it s semi-early night, since I need to make some munchies for the at home tailgate.

Prepping (mentally and otherwise) for a very very very cold day at the local football stadium tomorrow. Go Gophers!

@Juju:
Bro is in CMC. Lives in Rock Hill.
I mentioned his situation here last week but I never followed up. The lucky part involves his employer and wife. She went off to work last week while he was still in the shower. After he didn’t show up for work his employer called her, she went home to check on him…. where she found him in pain with a SEVERE headache so she took him to the hospital where the doc identified the textbook symptoms of a hemorrhage. Thank the deity of your choice and modern medicine.
MikeJ
Went out last night (Toulouse Petit, great food, asked what kind of bourbon I wanted in my Manhattan rather than knowing they’re made with rye) so staying in tonight. Gonna watch Doctor Who and probably play War Thunder.
NotMax
Was trying to motivate self to run out, find, and mail a birthday card to step-sister (never remember the exact date, but it’s sometime around Thanksgiving), but right now the weather feels as if the Sun has moved about 30 million miles closer to the Earth. So shall defer venturing outside until after sunset and drop it in the mail mañana.
SiubhanDuinne
Poor Rosie. Why is she on Prednisone? (Maybe I missed an explanatory thread.) Hope she’s better soon and that whatever ails her tonight is nothing serious or expensive.
Pogonip
I must have missed the original entry about Rosie. Why do you have to give her prednisone?
TaMara (BHF)
@Aji: My sympathies. Doing the BG here, too. It’s a chore and my baby is not reacting well to the insulin – we’ve had two low BG events in two weeks. I hope you’re little one has a good outcome.
max
Well, sorry about Rosie. (Need symptoms!)
NBC blew off Grimm so we can get two hours of Tom Brokaw and where we you when Kennedy was shot. I wasn’t born. My mother was in class in Oak Cliff. My grandmother was a volunteer server at the reception that Kennedy never arrived at. Enough already.
I don’t care where various celebrities were.

Getting my revamped machine (new HDs – loving my 500GB SSD and Raptor as my data backup, as well as a newer graphics card) up and running. I’m trying to consolidate, as I have 3-4 HDDs that I really have no use for – but I don’t want my data just sitting on them. So I hooked myself up with an external slot-loading device for internal HDDs and am just busy doing a transfer onto the Raptor. Then I plan to reformat them clean and keep them around just in case.
I suppose it’s a sad sign that the biggest annoyance out of it all is having to redo my entire iTunes…

Suzanne
Poor Rosiepuppy. I hope she is OK.
This week has been absolutely exhausting. At work, they told me that I am 185% booked for the next few months. So if I work 70 hours every week, I should be able to cope with the expected workload. And bill 40, of course. DAMNIT. Not to sound like an entitled whiner, but my bonus and raise better be fucking awesome.
So I am finally home, in my flannel PJs and a hoodie and slippers. We are having one of our rare long rains. It’s been pouring all day and the roads are a mess and there’s flooding. Pizza is on its way.
PsiFighter37
@max: More like Tom Brokaw needs to go the fuck away. All he does nowadays is reminisce about the awesome old days. I think it started when he got a little too into the whole ‘Greatest Generation’ bit (of which I do not think he belongs), but he carries himself with such a pompous self-importance that I can’t stand to tolerate him anymore.
Suffern ACE
@Comrade Jake: well then, give him a gentlemen’s ‘c’.

Pred might be a good med now. Trouble is, who knows? It’s a tough drug to get just right. Like Coumadin for humans, Warfarin, rat poison. Pred killed our dog, three weeks into treatment, intestinal ulcers. When it works, it works. When it doesn’t it doesn’t. No way to tell in advance.
Nicole
Spent some time tonight working on the Overall Relaxation Protocol exercises our dog trainer gave me to do with our rescue pooch. My three-year-old wanted to try it, too, and I caught a pretty funny two minutes of it on video. Which I am now unsuccessfully trying to upload to YouTube for the family to see. As a result, I am not Relaxed Overall.
Suffern ACE
@PsiFighter37: Kennedy was that Greatest Generation Breakout Star that even those ungrateful Boomers and Entitled Xers could love. I’m surprised he hasn’t spent 90 minutes lecturing us about how Kennedy really knew sacrifice and you don’t measure up.

After a 10-year absence, my vertigo returned with a vengeance on Tuesday. The world has been slightly spinning for 3 full days now and it’s making me a little cranky.
Aji
@Dee Loralei: Thanks, hon. I’m with you on Rosie, too. Hope she’s better soon.
geg6
Poor Rosie! Get her checked out, Cole.
Fucking Pens better win this.
Aji
@TaMara (BHF): Aw, thanks, hon. Sorry to hear about yours. Dog or cat? And how’s s/he doing, especially with all the little jabby things?
Ours is canine – She-Wolf. At the moment, under 62 pounds, which is like a 20-lb.+ drop for her. At the vet’s, her BG was 584, so that kinda settled the DX right away. She’s had low BG episodes the last two mornings, so I’ve been bringing her food inside at night to make sure she eats again before she goes to sleep, and then again when I first get up in the morning.

Badgers and Whioux are tied 0-0 after two periods. Wisconsin’s lucky to still be in the game.

@khead: I worked at the Domino’s right across from that hospital, the stories I could tell…my best to you and your bro.
Suffern ACE
@Cassidy: yes. Sipping tequilas have been around awhile now. And Rum is the next Bourbon.
TaMara (BHF)
@Aji: Cat and I think it’s pretty clear his pancreas is starting to function again – it’s a cat thing – so the insulin is just too much. By the vet’s recommendation I’m letting him be higher than we’d normally do and only give insulin when it’s off the charts.
Yesterday he tested at 370, I gave him a half unit at 7am and by 4pm he was at 50 and crashing. After the holidays we’ll do more blood work to make sure there’s not something serious going on, like cancer, causing the swings.
He’s fine with the shots, not so much the blood tests – mostly because I’m still clumsy.
jak
Our JRT was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 7 yrs old. 2x shots of insulin daily. Plus a pill for thyroid. Went blind shortly after diagnosis. Had eye surgery that restored sight. Not cheap but worth every penny. He was with us for another 8 years.

@Suffern ACE: The “L” attack alone is chastisement enough from Mr Broke-L, let alone the generational burden he likes to wield against us all (I just read this sentence in his voice, ugh).

@efgoldman: nah. You’re not much of a sitcom writer. I think the scenario is that the good perfesser should offer to teach the lad some life lesson about time management only to end up… Oh never mind. Just give the kid a D.

Just saw the stats and Wisconsin got outshot 12-1 in the second period. That matches with the run of play I saw.

Sitting at the bar of an Italian restaurant in Pasadena sipping a glass of Prosecco and waiting for my mini pizza. Life is good.
My mom texted me to let me know she fell into a cactus yesterday, which would be funnier if she wasn’t on blood thinners and had to go to the ER. We REALLY want her to winter out here instead of in Arizona, but she’s stubborn.
Aji
@TaMara (BHF): Wow. Poor little dude. I’m so sorry.
So by “a cat thing,” do you mean temporary diabetes? It’d be nice if his pancreas just needed a jump start. Good thoughts for him (and you) that it’s nothing more serious.
She-Wolf doesn’t seem t mind the shots in the slightest. The testing, though, is another matter; I feel horrible every time we do it. Where do you do it on a cat? For the dog, it’s the underside of the upper lip (or, apparently, the inside of the ear on dogs without a lot of fur, which lets that out as an option for her).
raven
Hang tough Rosie girl.
My bride had her “procedure” so, after not eating for a day and a half and waiting 3 1/2 hours after her appointed time, she got a clean bill of health as far as the Gastro doc is concerned so it’s off to the beach in the am!
PsiFighter37
@Mnemosyne (iPhone): I wish i was there right with ya!
I do hope to be out in SoCal again next spring…maybe we can see what the appetite is for another Juicer meetup down the road!

@Comrade Jake: That is some weak fucking tea. Either he’s dating someone who is too needy, or he has no idea how to balance multiple things in his life.
Just another sign, probably, that at nearly 28 years old, I’m too far removed from college and pretty damn unsympathetic to those who are out of my nearby age cohort.
hilzoy
Wait, what did I miss? What’s up with Rosie?
Aji
@Mnemosyne (iPhone): Pouring rain last night turned into 5″ of snow by this morning. Bitterly cold now, several more inches of snow on the way over the next 3-4 days, and then temps will drop to single digits.
But just rub it in, whydoncha?

@Looking for a Canadian (fka wini): You might be the only person here who says that…most everyone else here bitches at me about how young I am and how I don’t know jack shit yet. Oh, and about what an alcoholic I am.
Mike E
@PsiFighter37: Rage on, youngblood! Now keep it down, I gotta turn in so I can get up at 5a.
raven
@PsiFighter37: I didn’t think you were that young.
Aji
@Omnes Omnibus: If I still skied, it might, but I don’t, so it doesn’t. All it means is the arrival of hordes of monied tourists who don’t know how to drive their monster SUVs in snow and ice and who spend shitloads in town and at the Ski Valley but want 80% discounts from tribal artists.
Just Some Fuckhead, Thought Leader

Hey, it got all the way down to 50 degrees last night. And it rained for at least an hour yesterday, which is the So Cal equivalent of a blizzard. Cars were crashing all over the freeway.
It’s still chilly and drizzly, so my next stop is the big independent bookstore down the block. Then Michaels for craft supplies after I sober up a little more.
Looking for a Canadian (fka wini)
@PsiFighter37: Well I, for one, think you and your fiance/gf should hit up Minnesota for a meet-up! We’re cooler here than people think we are.
Calming influence
Grant ap. due Dec. 5, which has maybe 2% chance of getting funded, so spending the weekend writing and trying to stay positive. Considering the use of nitrous oxide to achieve that end.
Hope Rosie’s OK.
Aji
@Omnes Omnibus: No, they’re not. Well, not with us, at any rate. But some folks are in sufficiently dire straits that they feel they have no option, and there’s a certain breed of tourist who takes full advantage of that.
I have had people come in and look around at the art, seize on, say, a $400-500 piece of his silver work, and then profess shock that it’s not $35. I’ve also had people assume that we’ll be so desperate for a sale that we’ll take half or less of the price and get hugely offended when I politely decline. And those are the polite ones. You wouldn’t believe some of the things people think it’s okay to say to us.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
And Wisconsin just got away with a ridiculous trip to avoid a 2-on-1 break.
Aji
@Mnemosyne (iPhone): Here’s my tiny violin. I’ll see what I can do about squeezing out a tear or two for your “chilly and drizzly,” too. :-D
Gravenstone
@Looking for a Canadian (fka wini): That’s because everything is colder in Minnesnowta.
Omnes Omnibus
@Aji:
You’re probably right.
BTW: I like the “Red Wind” earrings. A couple of years ago, my ex and I took a long trip through Europe. While we were there we stayed with a number of her friends (she was European) in some of the more expensive cities. It saved us a lot money, but we needed to offer some kind of hostess gift to everyone. We used Native American silver earrings. We thought it would be different than anything they had – plus, they were small and easy to pack. Everyone was thrilled. Native American silver work isn’t seen all that often over there.
Looking for a Canadian (fka wini)
@Gravenstone: Touche! It certainly will be cold tomorrow. I wouldn’t complain, but for the fact that I will be sitting/standing outside for 3-4 hrs.

Poor Rosie. I’m hoping she doesn’t have anything seriously wrong and that she feels better real soon.
This year my birthday comes two days after Thanksgiving. It is also the 5th anniversary of losing my job. I’m going to a Irish pub for Thanksgiving. I may celebrate my birthday with a friend or by myself — maybe do a Japanese restaurant or Indian. At any rate both days will include special food.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)

Every single time Obama comes to town for one of those private, $xx,xxx/person Dem fundraisers, my local RW radio dude goes apeshit: 1) because apparently Obama INVENTED the practice – no GOPer would stoop to such a tacky thing! and even more bizarrely 2) that the rich liberals hosting and attending said functions are all suffering from “wealth guilt”. On and on and on about their “wealth guilt”.
I was all WTH? until I finally figured out that “wealth guilt” is a dog whistle for “white guilt”.
Suzanne
I am wondering why no one has started a beer delivery business. For your lazy alcoholic.
Aji
@Omnes Omnibus: Aren’t those gorgeous? He did those a few months ago. I love ’em, but they’re ment for sale, not for me. Gotta be ruthless . . . . :-D
I’ll bet the Indian jewelry was a big hit there. We have a number of returning clients from various corners of Europe. Now that they can see his stuff online, of course, they can “return” without actually making a trip to the States, which is nice. And nice of you to give some business to Native artists in the process, BTW.
Aji
@efgoldman: LOL – yeah, “but” . . . .
Actually, I love winter. But when it’s early, hard, aggravating my AI disease, and causing the horses founder flares all at once, notsomuch. And Mnem and I are friends, so I have to give her a little shit, and vice versa.
fuckwit
@Cassidy: I have vivid memories of drinking shots of tequila on quite a few occasions. Whatever happened after that, however, I’m rather fuzzy on. I also on quite a few occasions drank white rum straight, though most often I’d cut it with Lipton iced tea if there was any. And no, I don’t miss drinking.

@fuckwit: I’ve done the shot thing, but they seem to be pushing tequila as a sipping drink lately. I thought society was still on borboun kick.

@Aji: Oh, my – the lip? Yikes that sounds rough. Cats is the edge of the inner ear, which is difficult on my guy because he’s got big tuffs, but we make it work. Although I was just telling my brother I poked right through his ear and pricked my finger and our blood mixed, so I had to run the test again.
Yes, cats can have temporary diabetes and then spontaneously recover. He’s a good candidate because of how it presented.
TaMara (BHF)
@raven: I was thinking of you today and wondering. So glad to hear that, you guys deserve some fun.
Aji
@TaMara (BHF): It’s definitely not fun for her, but she’s really good about it. My sympathies on the poking yourself thing; sounds like something I’d do. I’m lucky that we can tag team. He’s on insulin, too, so he’s more used to working with lancets than I am (although I’ve done plenty of it). So he does the poking, and I grab the blood with the meter.
Here’s hoping that it’s a temp thing for your baby and he’s back to full health fast.
PsiFighter37
@Looking for a Canadian (fka wini): I would very much like to…last time I was in Minnesota was in the Twin Cities in August more than 10 years ago. that said, my fiancee does want to travel more internationally this year…going to be tough to convince her to swing it.
But what the heck, I may just do it myself if I have the time. Have to see how the vacation availability falls, what with getting married and taking a honeymoon, etc.

@Suzanne:
Rain in SoCal yesterday, took 2 hrs to get to work. Unfortunately it was because of 2 massive truck accidents with deaths on 2 of the 3 freeways I have to take. Could have gone another way but that way also had a massive truck/car pileup with deaths, in a tunnel. Almost turned around and went back home but that way was backed up farther.
Looking for a Canadian (fka wini)
