Auburn-Alabama is awfully interesting — Tigers just tied it up. The Dawgs just pulled within three after playing dead for a half. Go ‘Bama! Go Dawgs! Go ‘Cocks! Go Mizzou!

As for non-SEC teams, I guess I’m hoping UCLA and Stanford win, but I’m not very invested. I hope both TN and USC lose because both were stupid enough to hire Lane Kiffin.

PS: Looks like Coles’s team is winning. I’ll root for them for his sake. Go ‘Eers!

  60. 60.

    Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)

    November 30, 2013 at 7:36 pm

The angle I want to see on that play is what was happening while the ball was in the air. My guess is that Auburn was setting up a return in case the kick came up short while Bama was just watching the ball.

  61. 61.

    Keith P

    November 30, 2013 at 7:37 pm

I am total shock at that ending. The Georgia game was one thing, plus there was 25 seconds for Aaron Murray to work, but this is the friggin’ IRON BOWL. How improbable a win? The refs put a second back on the clock when the game had “ended”. Nick Saban decides to have a redshirt freshman attempt a 57 yd field goal instead of try a Hail Marshall. Auburn *catches* the miss and goes 105 yards for…the…win! Delirious is about how I feel after this one. What a season for Gus Malzahn, and I hope they get to leapfrog Ohio State.
PS, Auburn will break Twitter tonight.

    @The Dangerman:

JMN may have called it a couple posts back; Bama maybe thought it had a chance too and got caught watching.

I agree with you & JMN – It was straight and they wouldn’t be able to see how short until the ball came down. Also, as Danielson pointed out, the Alabama players were linemen & blockers, not kick coverage guys.

But that ending came straight from the football gods – they loathe hubris. Should have let play end and go to overtime, but no. Saban had to have one more second. Football gods say, you really want another second? Okay, here it is!

  65. 65.

    MattR

    November 30, 2013 at 7:47 pm

@Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): Just caught a replay that showed it. Both teams were pretty much watching the ball. One Bama lineman was hustling downfield (#79 I think) and may have been behind the 2 other Auburn guys who started off behind the line and dropped back a bit but did not really sprint downfield. But he was on the kick returners right and was nowhere near fast enough to get across the field. What really worked out for Auburn was that they focused their kick rush to the left side and the kick ended up floating to the left a bit as well. So they ended up with three or four guys in position to wall off the rest of the Bama linemen.

Once he took off, though, it just seemed like he was going to go all the way given the kind of season Auburn’s had (going back to the Ole Miss game, where they won at the end). 2010 was incredible and all, but this season has just been something special. How on earth does one team have a Georgia ending AND an Iron Bowl ending in the same season (back to back, no less)? And I guess it goes without saying that Malzahn is coach of the year…doesn’t seem like it should even be close at this point.

I still can’t believe, 4th and 2, a field goal basically seals it, and Bama went for it (and, yes, the prior 4th down call was wrong, too, on Auburn’s part). I see the SEC is already lobbying for a 1 loss SEC team to leapfrog either OSU or FSU; good luck with that unless it’s Alabama somehow doing the leapfrogging (and I don’t see how they can leapfrog the winner of Auburn/Missouri if that’s the game).

Best part of this Iron Bowl is that it actually lived up to the hype. Was supposed to be the greatest Iron Bowl of all time, and a strong case could be made that it was. Contrast with the Bama-LSU game from a couple of years back (“Game of the Century”) that turned into a 9-6 snoozefest. Games like this rarely live up to the hype, but this one was hyped to all ends but was a fantastic game – the teams traded TDs all game long and literally came down to the last second.

My mom is pure War Eagle Auburn alum.

She is orbiting Jupiter right about now.

This is why we watch football, despite the scandal, despite the concussion woes. We watch for the unbelievable moments.

This was not just another game. This was not just another team. This was a rivalry game with everything on the line.

I’m a Gators / USF Bulls alum, but I gotta tip my hat to mom’s team. Best of luck, Auburn. Let’s see if you can play for the big title.

But that ending came straight from the football gods – they loathe hubris. Should have let play end and go to overtime, but no. Saban had to have one more second. Football gods say, you really want another second? Okay, here it is!

Saban: (ball incoming) I got it, I got it, I got it!
    BOOM
    Tombstone: He got it.

    @Betty Cracker:

I can picture both happening, especially MSU over OSU. The Buckeyes, throughout the length of this unbeaten streak, haven’t seen defense that’s close to as good as that which the Spartans have played this year- and I don’t think that OSU has the sort of defense that can hold the Spartans’ slightly-below-average offense under 20.

Going to get a full day tomorrow and continue to be hopeful.

The most amazing game ending I’ve seen in a long time with Auburn scoring a TD from their own end zone on a missed field goal from Alabama in the last seconds of the game. Shock and mayhem. Actually beat out the Penn State- WI game for sheer upset drama. All in all an interesting football game.

@Mr Stagger Lee: ESPN has deals with all the conferences, there’s no benefit for them to fluff one over the other. Sports media (and particularly the opinion portion of the sports media) tends towards not accepting anything other than the status quo. The SEC has won 7 in a row, therefore they must still be good and a one loss SEC team must still be the best because that’s what we’ve seen for the last 7 years. Alabama was a two touchdown favorite and lost. I doubt they’ll be punished for that, and will probably not drop much further than 5, which gives them a shot to get into the title game.

@efgoldman: nope, non-champs will be able to get into the playoffs. I think preference will be given to champs, but you could have the equivalent to the UNC/Duke basketball scenario where two of the top teams end up among the best in the country.

@JPL: They’ll probably need Duke and/or Michigan State to win next week. Then depending on how things go tonight, they could get back in against either Clemson or the SEC champ. I doubt that Saban has that much left on his soulcreditcard, but it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibilities. It all comes down to how forgiving (or not) the polls and computers are.

If OSU beats MSU, they are in the title game with FSU. Please SEC fans, spare us the baloney about leapfrogging. A one loss team has no place over an unbeaten OSU, whether it is Alabama or Auburn.

OSU v. MSU is not a gimme.
