Anybody watching on NBC?
I missed the Fug Girls’ red carpet live-blogging, but I look forward with real anticipation to their blog coverage tomorrow.
Must’ve been some excellent globes on view, or else the Blogmaster would’ve remembered to put up an Open Thread earlier…
Violet
Yes, watching, although I’m a bit delayed on the DVR because I paused while in the kitchen. Love Tina and Amy. Watching because of them.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
Jacqueline Bisset bleep-out for the win!
Kathy
Wow Jaclyn Biset was completely out of it!
Elizabelle
@Kathy:
She didn’t expect to win, did she? And neither did the organizers; that was a long, long walk from a way far table.
Liked the quip that they’d keep the show under three hours or, as Martin Scorsese would say, Act 1.
JPL
Amy Poehler mentioned that watching Twelve Years a Slave changed her views about slavery. Thanks to Richard Cohen, pretty much every got the joke.
@Violet: You could actually get the exact quote from Poehler. I don’t have a dvr, it was great.
EriktheRed
Personally, I don’t give two shits for these awards shows anymore, but my wife still watches them. I just caught a little of the beginning and I have to say this:
As Tina Fey gets older, she gets hotter.
JPL
Who are the presenters for this award? I have to admit that this is the first time, I’ve seen the Golden Globes.
PsiFighter37
No idea who Bissett is, but damn was she tanked.
Also, the monologue was tame as shit. I want Ricky Gervais back!
Steeplejack
Whoa. Extended Miyazaki tribute on The Simpsons just now. Very cool.
Mike in NC
Godawful bio-pic of Liberace wins best TV movie or miniseries award! WTF? Pity vote for Michael Douglas, maybe?
Time to switch channels.
khead
Tom Hanks has gray hair? Now looks older than I am? WTF?
JPL
@Mike in NC: I was thinking the same thing but Downton Abbey doesn’t come on until nine.
PsiFighter37
@khead: He’s gotta be in his mid-50s now?
If there’s one thing to be said, it’s that the younger generation of movie actors (outside of maybe Jennifer Lawrence) have true star wattage.
gogol's wife
@JPL:
Right. And after Downton Abbey (at least here) there’s a “making-of” thing about Sherlock. Can’t wait.
? Martin
I only watch awards shows if people I know are in them, and I don’t know anyone there tonight. But Tina Fey gets very close to changing that rule.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
That “godawful bio-pic” was a fave here in the Pantload household. Very unflinching, non-fawning look at a high-rolling talent and personality. Douglas, Damon, and Lowe all gave their best.
debbie
Not to sound too superficial, but the gowns really suck.
PsiFighter37
Cranston wins best actor, and Breaking Bad won best drama…well deserved.
WereBear
@Mike in NC: It wouldn’t be a pity vote. Douglas CHANNELED Liberace. It was amazing.
Violet
@Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn: Yeah, I thought it was great.
Mike in NC
@PsiFighter37: Check out “The Deep” for JB in her prime.
Kathy
@Elizabelle: @Elizabelle: yes, we noticed the long walk as well. I do love the fact that the Golden Globes doesn’t perfectly game these things out :) sort of seemes like everyone has a scotch in their hand.
Comrade Mary
You guys are making me watch this. Grrr.
Love to see Cranston and BB get their due, but please, can we stop prodding the brilliant Aaron Paul to yell “Yeah, BITCH!” on command? I’m fine with the word, I thought it was effective and funny on the show, and I larfed at a bunch of compilation videos featuring it. But I’m done now with it being used as a blunt weapon. Done. Donedonedone.
JPL
I’m just glad there are no Chevy Truck commercials, at least so far.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
“Breaking Bad” earned the fuck out of that award. As a family/crime story, Season Five drew me in more than anything this side of “The Godfather” trilogy and “Goodfellas.”
the Conster
@debbie:
Sandra Bullock’s and Elisabeth Moss’s gowns are amazing.
Kathy
Oh crap, only wanted to reply to Elizabelle only once and edit button is sucking. Sorry.
Violet
@Kathy: I’ve gotten to where I enjoy the Golden Globes much more than the Oscars. The Golden Globes have TV shows, which these days are often really excellent, and since there’s alcohol they tend to be a lot funnier. The Oscars just take themselves so seriously.
Violet
@the Conster: I thought Reese Witherspoon looked gorgeous on the red carpet, from what I saw at least.
SiubhanDuinne
@PsiFighter37:
Are you serious?
[Edit: Are you fucking serious?]
JPL
@Violet: Maybe a tad to much alcohol.
PsiFighter37
@SiubhanDuinne: I guess I’m too…young? Not culturally aware?
Anyways, this composer is wasted or stoned? That was a mess.
Spike
@PsiFighter37: Gervais made the tactical blunder of actually being funny.
debbie
@SiubhanDuinne:
Kids today, huh?
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
REALLY wanted to Steven Price receive best score for “Gravity.” Granted, I’m into ambient sounds more than the average listener, but the detail and the motiffes that went into that soundtrack will blow me away for years to come.
Comrade Mary
Oh man, I love the winning composer. I have no idea what his score sounds like, but he was sweet, genuinely flustered, and the hawtest long-haired beardy guy in the room.
Oh, here it is.
Helen
@Spike: No. Gervais made the tactical blunder of making fun of the “cool kids”
ETA: see Colbert, Stephen; White House Correspondent’s Dinner

I’m watching tonight ’cause I wanted to see Breaking Bad win big ᕙ(`▽´)ᕗ but yeah, my first reaction on Jacqueline Bissett was ‘man, she is loaded’. Don’t think she expected to win, good on her!
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
REALLY wanted to see Steven Price receive best score for “Gravity.” Granted, I’m into am – beint (is this the word that got my original post into moderation purgatory?) sounds more than the average listener, but the detail and the motiffes that went into that soundtrack will blow me away for years to come
Comrade Mary
@PsiFighter37: DUDE. He was sitting in freakin’ Wyoming, had to hike a mile to get to the stage, was accosted by Puff Daddy who had to tell some old story, and then had to gather himself again for a speech. Give the damn cute underdog some space.
And I’m loving what I’m hearing of the soundtrack so far. Very Discreet Music. So chamber.
Schlemizel
I forget, what are the golden gobs for?
Sorry I missed Fey & Pohler, they can be pretty funny but awards show is where entertainment goes to die
PsiFighter37
@Helen: The best was his sign off on the last one he did, knowing full well (I’m sure) he wasn’t coming back. “And I’d like to thank God for making me an atheist.”
Fucking awesome.
Comrade Mary
@Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn: Yes, the bit I heard of Gravity intrigued me. Both movies and scores are on my list now.
Schlemizel
@Spike:
Damn, I wish I had seen that. Rare events like that don’t happen too often
Corner Stone
Who the fuck does not know who Jacqueline Bisset is?
What’s wrong here?
beltane
@SiubhanDuinne: I hadn’t heard much of Jacqueline Bisset since I was a child in the 1980s. It occurred to me that she must be around the same age as my mother-both of them seem to be experencing the same problems with their hair.
For all you youngsters out there, Jacqueline Bisset was considered to be quite hawt back in the day. As they are now, so shall we be…
Violet
@PsiFighter37: Well, he said he wasn’t coming back the second time, and then he did the third one.
Elizabelle
@Comrade Mary:
Loved the winning composer. Graceful, deft speech too.
Liked “All is Lost” very much, but don’t remember the score. Have to see it again now …
Also liked acceptance speech by U2 for their Mandela song.
(Has anyone seen “Mandela” yet?)
PsiFighter37
I saw the ads for Ray Donovan, but is it really a critically acclaimed show? I don’t remember it making a press splash.
debbie
@efgoldman:
I didn’t realize Bissett was still acting, but it was a pleasant surprise to see Charlotte Rampling show up in the last season of Dexter.

Aaron Paul doesn’t win for BB?! Yo, bitchez!

Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
@Comrade Mary: I can be very VERY particular about movie scores I adore. When I was about 14, John Williams’ scores for “Close Encounters” and “Star Wars” were up against each other for best motion picture soundtracks, and I’m STILL pissed “Close Encounters” wasn’t the one that got the nod.
STILL!

People were talking about you not being around.

@Corner Stone: I am reminded of my father crying like a baby when we went to see Dark Eyes with Marcello Mastroianni. It wasn’t that my father thought the film was particularly moving, it’s that he was so upset to realize that Mastroianni, the idol of his youth, had become an old man.
SiubhanDuinne
@PsiFighter37:
Probably too young. I would never call you “culturally unaware” — in fact, I mostly reserve that descriptor for myself.
Not watching the GG, so can’t really express an opinion. I’m just following along with the comments here.
Mnemosyne (iPhone)
@Elizabelle:
After listening to the song on YouTube, I’m pretty sure the GG voters just saw the name “Mandela” and voted for it rather than actually listening to the songs.
I’m also now fully expecting “The Croods” to win Best Animated Feature, because it seems to be a “Fuck Disney” kind of night.
patrick II
I see Amy Adams wore a dress consistent with her winning movie character.
PsiFighter37
Amy Adams wins…think she was the front-runner? Would’ve been cool if JLD had won…but she’ll probably win for Veep.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
Haven’t seen “American Hustle.” Did Amy Adams really earn this award? I’ve wanted to champion her talents, but she’s generally come up a smidge short in what I’ve seen her in.
Speech was good, though. I love the raw emotion this platform provides for w/r/t the acceptance speeches.

A quick consultation with Mr. Google informs me that she is two years younger than I am. Uh….

Ha! I just Googled and found a picture of Bissett when she was in “Under the Volcano” with Albert Finney. Stunning. It’s a shame what life does to us all.

Corner Stone
@beltane: I, for one, am not kicking her out of bed. To be blunt about it.
SiubhanDuinne
@efgoldman:
Wendy Carlos begs to differ.
beltane
@SiubhanDuinne: That would make you two years younger than my mother. But you seems to be much younger in spirit.
We need a “Leave Jacqueline Bisset alone” petition. People are so mean: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/watch-jacqueline-bissets-train-wreck-of-a-golden-globes-acceptance-speech/

House of Cards finally wins an acting award with Robin Wright. I really like Spacey better in the series, but I am glad it got recognized aside from the production side.
SiubhanDuinne
@dance around in your bones:
Oh! You’re back!!!
Welcome back, DAIYB!!
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
I don’t begrudge Robin Wright Penn he award one iota — “Drive carefully, the roads are icy” is one of our fave lines by any actress over the past year — but Anna Gunn didn’t even get a nom?
PsiFighter37
@Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn: Maybe she is supporting actress? I don’t recall if they had done that award.
That said, Gunn was great as Skylar throughout the series. Seeing her change from season 1 to 5 was…quite unnerving.
Did not know Jared Leto hadn’t acted in 6 years – guess that makes sense given his work on 30 Seconds to Mars.

@SiubhanDuinne:
Thank you ever so…I had to take a break for a while from politics because it was getting me down – but I missed alla youse and the witty repartee around this joint.
PsiFighter37
Spike Jonze gets best screenplay for Her – really want to see this movie from all I have read.
SiubhanDuinne
@efgoldman: Oh, I know. It’s just that s/he was the only name I could think of in a hurry.
And truth be known, I don’t much like synthesized music either (although I admit to a weakness for the theremin, which I suppose could be considered a kind of synthesizer).
Occurs to me, we could get into a really interesting conversation about the intersection of music and “new” technologies. Valve trumpets, anyone?
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
Also, too, good to see ya back, Dance.
PsiFighter37
Andy Sandberg for best actor in a TV comedy? Are you fucking kidding me?!
That said, his acceptance speech was probably the best of them all.
dance around in your bones
@efgoldman: I knew someone would say that.
Let me say I find your repartee quite erudite and enjoyable to read. If repartee is the correct term in this regard…..which I am sure you will know!
Schlemizel
@dance around in your bones:
HEY! Welcome back – I hope all is well in the Bones household.
PsiFighter37
Also, from what little I’ve seen (and read), the Michael J. Fox Show is not all that funny, and has quite shitty ratings to boot….feel like that was a giveaway of a nomination. Wish Bateman had gotten it, but I feel like ‘Arrested Development’ wasn’t as well-received this time around (mainly given the puzzle-piecing nature of it).
Surprised ‘Blue’ didn’t win best foreign film, given all the notoriety (and awards it has already received) around it.
Console
Tatiana Maslany or GTFO.

y@dance around in your bones: Hey, daiyb! Welcome back! Take a break from politics? Did the Chris Christie bridge scandal draw you back in?

Thanks! Lately it’s been puking from stomach flu (all 3 kids) and a nosebleed today. But in general, though much has changed, all is good.
@Violet: Sort of all of the above…..Cole’s car story cracked me up and his ongoing love affair/photography efforts are priceless.

In other news, Michael Douglas nailed it.
Duh.
Calling out to Matt: “I had more sequins.” Pure class.
PsiFighter37
Michael Douglas wins. Not surprised, I guess they didn’t have a ‘Supporting Actor’ category for Damon?
Garbo
Agree with whoever said above, Douglas disappeared into the role. Hard to do for such a well-known actor.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
@PsiFighter37: Arrested Development’s return suffered from the full 30-minute format, IMHO. Pared to 22 minutes per ep, the series’ original incarnation seemed to better thrive under the Robert Benchley maxim, “brevity is the soul of wit.” The other 8 minutes of each ep of the Netflix season struck me mostly as bloat.
PsiFighter37
@Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn: I would need to watch it again, but it did run a little long.
gogol's wife
Downton was great tonight! (except for Edna) I’m so relieved. Last week worried me.

Thought JLD would win easily, but surprised (happily) that Parks and Rec is getting its due, even if it’s a bit late in its run.

Guess Woody Allen couldn’t show up? Classy acceptance by Diane Keaton, though.
Paddy
@Console: Amen.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
Woody never (to my knowledge) show up at these awards shows. But Diane Keaton did a damn fine stand in.
It’s hard to recall Allen was behind so very many remarkable movies.
PsiFighter37
Brooklyn 99 wins best comedy? WTF?

@Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn:
Woody is notoriously shy – one might say emotionally unavailable :) There is a fine 2 part documentary about him and his movies on Netflix right now.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
As a HUGE “Gravity” fanboi, I’m happy to see Alfonso Cuarón receive what should be the first of many richly-deserved nods for how he managed to bring that movie to the screen. The technical brilliance alone never fails to send my jaw crashing to the floor.

Two unexpected dresses charmed me: Julie Bowen’s colour block with contrasting texture, and Emma Stone’s outfit that went from UGH! to Hmmm! for me in about two seconds.(I can’t find a link,so maybe when I finally see it, it will be back to UGH!)
Mike in NC
DiCaprio. You magnificent bastard!
kc
@kc:
Comment FAIL, sorry. Can’t delete from iPhone.
PsiFighter37
DiCaprio wins for Wolf of Wall Street. Kind of surprised given how much the movie has been crapped on.
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
DiCaprio is sheer class and grace. Very well-deserved call out to Mary Scorsese, who’s given DiCaprio career making roles. Hard to believe Leo felt so constricted by Cameron in “Titanic” that he skipped the Oscars the night “Titanic” swept so many awards. His is a talent to exploit, not constrict.
? Martin
@PsiFighter37: That’s one of those ‘Gee, how’d we manage to not award this guy all of these years? Ok, that was close enough.’ awards.
Violet
@Comrade Mary: I thought Emma Stone’s dress was awful! It was like she was wearing various parts randomly thrown together. It even moved weird.
Can’t believe Brooklyn 99 won. It’s not horrible, but it’s certainly not that good.
Violet
@PsiFighter37: I really want to see Wolf of Wall St. I worked with those guys–okay, not those specific guys but in that industry–for awhile. From the commercials and trailers I’ve seen of it, it seems pretty accurate.
Mike in NC
“American Hustle” award was a tribute to the utter shittyness of the ugly 1970s. Bravo!
lol chikinburd
So I’m not watching, but apparently a child molester has won more awards tonight than all black artists combined? Is this true?
Mnemosyne (iPhone)
Matthew McConaughey? Over both Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor? WT fucking F?
Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn
Matthew McConaughey makes good. I’ve always appreciated him. Still need to see Dallas Buyers Club, it’s tops on our to-see list.
Comrade Mary
@Violet: Yeah, I thought it was ugly, then it flipped. Waiting for another look before I make up my mind.
Twelve years after the show started, 12 Years a Slave won! Here’s McQueen now …
Violet
@Mnemosyne (iPhone): I’m glad to see him get an award, but, yeah, kind of hard to believe he got it over those guys.
Comrade Mary
Oh, and Lupita Nyong’o was KILLER in a simple red dress. No jewellery except for teeny diamond earrings, just that colour (less orange on my tv than this photo) and sweep against her skin. KILLER.
Mike in NC
@Comrade Mary: Looking forward to the Richard Cohen reaction in WaPo.
Comrade Mary
@Mike in NC: “I never really understood award shows until last night …”

@debbie:
What’re the Globes for if not superficiality? Agree with you — most of the dresses this year were awful. A few exceptions (Kate Beckinsale…) — most of the rest either dowdy or weird.
I liked Robert Downey Jr.’s jokes. Also, even though I rather dislike Michael Douglas and always have, he was friggin’ brilliant as Liberace and that was a great TV movie.
cckids
@Violet:
My spouse works in the industry (for 17 years now), and yes, it is accurate. The movie, however, is WAY too long. Like an hour too long (clocks in at 3 hours). Not enuf story for that length.
Yatsuno
@Comrade Mary: Linkie no work. Please to be fixing.
Comrade Mary
@Yatsuno: Sorry, sweetie.
Here she is.
Anne Laurie
@Comrade Mary: Those ‘Separated at Birth’ photos of Sofia Vergera and Lena Dunham… oooowch!
I totally respect Dunham’s body-positivity, but, sweetie: Fit is important. If you aim to impress, the words ‘sausage casing’ should never bubble up in the viewer’s mind. Too also, whoever told you that color was flattering was not your friend. For the next event, go up a size — maybe two sizes! — and try a nice scarlet, or maybe teal? (Also, that much gown requires a much more polished hairstyle, but one step at a time… )
Omnes Omnibus
@Anne Laurie: I would guess that Dunham is playing up a contrarian image. Even if she follows your advice, she will not fit the current beauty model. So she decided to go the other way and emphasize her “flaws.”
Anne Laurie
@Omnes Omnibus: There’s contrarian and there’s clownish. I had Dunham’s body when I was her age, and I’d respect her choices if I thought she were actually going the Minnie Pearl/Phyllis Diller route. But it looks like she wants to play the ‘plus-sized girls can be sexxxy, too’ theme — only she’s either getting bad advice (stylists don’t have much experience with woman-sized women) or she’s just not seeing in the mirror what the rest of us see on the screen (as will happen, with twenty-somethings).
Take a look at these two photos, for an example how it can be done. “Adele is wearing chic designer Stella McCartney!” — yeah, she (or her stylists) have taken the notoriously fugly-productive SM’s sack-with-arm-ruffles-and-a-wraparound modesty panel, ripped off the tack-ons, added real sleeves, given it a proper fit at the bust, changed the waist, flared the skirt, and improved the hemline. But they kept the neckline, and the really pretty fabric, so it’s Stella! And people went, Wow, doesn’t Adele look great! — not, I wish I had her courage. (Pro tip, anyone tells you “I wish I had your courage” they mean “I hope you look like that on purpose, because it’s not a good look on you.”…. )
