Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

People are weird.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

This chaos was totally avoidable.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Looks like it’s just you and me, kiddies (and I have a horrible cough, so I’m not sure how much fun I am going to be).

Music then….

I was going with some nice Bundy rum I bought this week, but the plan is essentially the same…

Just found out my 13 year old niece was arrested (or maybe just cited, not sure on details) for having alcohol at school. Oy vey.

I guess I can be glad it wasn’t pot, so it was at least something that’s legal for *some* people, even if not her. But good lord.

Speaking of which, at Christmas I found a nice little brandy glass (4" high, 7 ounces) at Crate & Barrel. I have never understood the need for a gigantic snifter. This glass is a good size for my two- or three-ounce dose of Rémy 1738, and it’s wide enough to get your nose in the bowl for sniffing purposes.

Apparently she doesn’t want to live at home anymore and said she wants to live with Grandma…meaning my mom and dad…where I live. In our apartment. Sooooooo no. Besides, she’d hate living here, she just thinks it would be better because her parents aren’t there because they’re being awful by, you know, being parents.

So… Is Drake supposed to be, you know, good at performing, singing, that general area? Because judging by the SNL showing, that was some tedious weak-ass shit.

  26. 26.

    Hal

    January 19, 2014 at 1:51 am

@FlipYrWhig: Personally I think Drake is a terrible performer. He can’t rap or sing, and he bears more than a passing resemblance to that sloth from Ice Age. My younger cousins love him though.

  27. 27.

    FlipYrWhig

    January 19, 2014 at 1:55 am

    FlipYrWhig

    January 19, 2014 at 1:58 am

@Hal: is he supposed to be a performer for young kids? Or was he once? I don’t get it. In a weird gray area with no sexiness and no grit and yet also no craft. So what’s left? Feh, off my lawn you whippersnappers.

Sharing a few of my favorite covers that IMHO are as good as if not better than the original:

    Matraca Berg’s cover of Jolene

I always liked this song, but couldn’t stand Dolly Parton’s voice.
Matraca Berg hit it squarely on the head.

The Kentucky Headhunters cover of Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine

Not your standard country group. They also did a cover of ‘Skip a Rope’ that l like, but Youtube doesn’t have it.

This isn’t a cover, but Steve Earle’s Snake Oil has a message that’s still relevant today.

    @Sarah T

re: Skidoo, gave the heads up this past Wednesday. That the film did not spontaneously leap from the camera and strangle the director, crew and cast is a wonderment.

Marx, at 78, had to be insistently cajoled to return to movies for this one. Gleason, Channing, etc., however, were far, far from being has-beens when the mess was produced.

So far as The Big Cube is concerned, Lana Turner attempting to play the Lana Turner she was in her 20s is not quite as discommoding as was, say, Mae West in Sextette, but a close second.

@burnspbesq: Pretty sure that the mere fact that you know what records were and was in a shop to purchase them is the very definition of “old”. Did you also seek out 8-tracks, phonograph cylinders, or 12″ laserdiscs?

    @Punchy:

I can’t speak for him, but I used to own an 8-track recorder* and a couple of Pioneer and Yamaha LD players.
LD players and discs continued to be produced until DVD took off in the late 1990’s.
Now you’re really showing your age if you remember the RCA SelectaVision CED Videodisc Player

*the only place I could even find blank 8-track tapes was at Radio Shack.
