Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The words do not have to be perfect.

You cannot shame the shameless.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

It’s a new day. Light all those Biden polls of young people on fire and throw away the ashes.

“That’s what the insurrection act is for!”

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

Republicans don’t trust women.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

.

A palate sweetener for the Blogmaster. Just in case anyone’s missed it, via NYMag and Grantland. Season Four coming to HBO April 6, I believe. Since I haven’t read the books or watched the earlier three seasons yet, can’t tell you how spoilerific it might be, but surely HBO is professional enough to avoid the obvious pitfalls…

I’m at the ER with my mom, waiting for her to be re-admitted. I’m pretty much hating every fucking thing right now.

We had some interesting co-care-waitees, though. There was a toddler who’d been bitten in the face by a dog, a woman who’d been thrown from a horse and trampled and a drunk 20-something woman who was brought in by a cop and handcuffed to a gurney. Not sure what she did.

I skeptically bought the first edition of the first Thrones book for 25 cents in the throw away pile at the library (paperbacks were a dime). It was about 1,000 pages for 25 cents, so I thought, great return on investment. On the downside, it said it was “Fantasy”. I quit reading Fantasy when a could not get more than 100 pages into the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings books. I gambled my 25 cents and bought it. Blew me away. Shared with neighbor lady and she flipped out. We were both buying sharing the other books in the series. There are issues with author GRRM’s frequency of published books, but you need to ignore this and jump on in.

One funny thing, the internet says the 25 cent first edition library book worth a pretty good pile of money.

Sounds like a typical ER in FL, particularly the dog bite. On our side of America’s dick the paper reported at least one serious dog attack a week. Usually it was a kid but often it was an adult who just happened to be biking by.

…surely HBO is professional enough to avoid the obvious pitfalls…

HBO is trapped in orbit around Martin’s World, little choice there. Pity the lot waiting for the punishment to stop, the author clearly hates his audience, his characters, his story, for why else does he taunt all comers?

The local library has listed a number of his non-Throne titles under the science fiction category, and though the temptation is strong, it reeks of further madness.

Supposedly, Game of Thrones was born out of GRRM’s frustration with the Things You Can’t Do On Television when he was working on Beauty and the Beast.

At least we’ve been saved from the carnage that would have followed had he worked on Little House on the Prairie.

    And I looked this up:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Sembler

    A couple of comments:

    1. Like so much of the so called Conservative Movement, it has quickly moved through Eric Hoffer”s three stages of “mass movements.” First, it starts as a cause, then becomes a business, and ends up a racket.

    2. I think the mass incarceration of the Black and Browns and White working class through the drug laws is a “feature” not a “bug.” It is a way of social control and creating a large class of “untouchables” who are limited in their employment and education options and who are easily stigmatized.

I have read all the books, gobbling them down as soon as they were released. But PSI is right, HBO has a problem in that GRRM is maddeningly slow in getting the sixth book out and the series is now into the fourth book. Incidentally, I did not care much for the fourth book. It was partially left over chapters from book three and a mishmash of chapters that did little to advance the (many) story lines. Loved Book five however, and HBO could easily take three seasons to cover both four and five.

    @Mart:

One funny thing, the internet says the 25 cent first edition library book worth a pretty good pile of money.

I doubt that very much. The real first edition (the one that is valuable) had a very small run; your library copy will undoubtedly be a later and cheaper reprint.

    @feebog:

But PSI is right, HBO has a problem in that GRRM is maddeningly slow in getting the sixth book out and the series is now into the fourth book.

GRRM will reportedly reveal the endgame to the producers of the TV show if they’re outpacing him.

Incidentally, I did not care much for the fourth book. It was partially left over chapters from book three and a mishmash of chapters that did little to advance the (many) story lines.

No, it wasn’t. Sure, there were leftovers from the previous book, but its biggest problem was that while writing it GRRM discovered he had a problem: he wanted to do a time jump, but that caused some logistical issues. And when he started again he noticed the book was going to be massive, so he split it — except he did not split it in time, but he grouped the chapters for a bunch of characters (most of them not fan favorites) into book four and put the remaining ones (which happen at the same time as the ones in book four) in book five. Also, he fired the person who edited the first three books and it kinda shows.

@Paul in KY: Season 4 is the last third of the third book, plus stuff from books 4 and 5 (you can see some of those scenes from the later books in the preview.) My guess is that season 5 will have most of the rest of books 4 and 5 (there’s a lot of extraneous material in those volumes that will not make gripping TV – or reading – drama) plus one of the beginning events of book 6, since neither book 4 or 5 contains the spectacular conclusions to which they are leading up.
