Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Cole is on a roll !

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

Even though I know this is a bad idea, I’m off to do it anyway!

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Russia bombs Ukraine’s maternity hospitals; Republicans in the House can’t sort out supporting Ukraine.

Everybody saw this coming.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

This fight is for everything.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

This blog will pay for itself.

Fer fuck’s sake Pens. I’m staying up to watch this when all I want to do is sleep, so could you please not shit the bed?

*** Update ***

Nope. Another Sharks powerplay. Pens have sucked since the game before the Olympics, and I am not sure what they are doing wrong.

hokey is about fighting like nascar is about crashes? yes? I like to think the movie Slapshot sums it up. most people watch it to enjoy the carnage.

    Well said Sen Harkin.

@poptartacus: No. NASCAR tries to avoid crashes. Hockey doesn’t try to avoid fights. They could easily arrest any individual starting a fight for assault. That’d take them out of the game for the evening (nobody would ever press charges) but it’d soon put an end to it.

I’ve never been to a hockey game and maybe I’ve watched three or four in the past 30 years. I got tickets to go through work to a New Jersey team. Am I supposed to bring an octopus to throw on the ice or is that some other sport?

That is a tradition of the Detroit Red Wings during the playoffs. It’s still the regular season.

@RobertDSC-Power Mac G5 Dual: it’s not really on them. Kobe has missed 56 games, Nash has missed 50, Farmar missed 30… Seriously, they’ve had 7 different people start at point guard. You can’t expect anything that resembles success when most days you have more players on the injured list than on the active roster.

I hate goon hockey as much as anyone so tonight, I celebrated the fact that the Red Wings retired the jersey of Niklaus Lidstrom. In 20 seasons, he helped win four Stanley Cups, won seven Norris trophies, a Conn Smythe, and got the gold winning goal at the Torino Olympics. And in all that time, he never had a fighting major penalty.

Of course, he is not a Canadian but rather a Swede—one of the earth’s more enlightened tribes.

    @poptartacus:
Of course, that is NOT the message of “Slapshot.” This movie (Paul Newman’s personal favorite BTW) is about how the carnage of rust belt factory closures led to many manifestations of brutality. And not everyone signed on to the goon plans.

Slapshot was written by a Minnesota woman who loved her minor league players but was disgusted with how their lives had been brutalized in the 1970s.

It is easily the best sports movie ever made—about any sport.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said on CNN’s “Crossfire” that Obama had done “a very good job” in the last 24 hours. The South Carolina Republican added “I appreciate what he did today. Thank God he’s upping his game.”

@Baud: Check Charity Navigator for their “administrative expenses”. Scroll down to read John Reed’s take

They could have, and should have, used the footage that showed proud, happy, disabled vets and their families making use of some Wounded Warrior Project service or product and being helped thereby. They could have, and should have, left the choking back tears and confessions of suicidal thoughts and the scenes of a vet who apparently cannot speak because of brain damage on the cutting room floor.

    Program Expenses
(Percent of the charity’s budget spent on the programs
    and services it delivers) 57.9%
    Administrative Expenses 5.6%
    Fundraising Expenses 36.3%
    Fundraising Efficiency $0.23
    Primary Revenue Growth 78.6%
    Program Expenses Growth 62.9%
    Working Capital Ratio (years)

    36.3% for “fundraising”. Right

    Wounded Warriors Charity Navigator comments.

    Steve Petrilli Sr
Thanks to Charity Navigator I will not be flushing my $$$$ down the drain with this organization. Of 74 million in contributions over 57 million went to staff and marketing and not to helping the wounded warriors. Their commercial is slick and touching, but that is where it ends…at the commercial if only slightly more than 25% of the contributions are being used for the “stated” purpose of assisting wounded warriors.

Jeff Olson · District Operations Manager at Universal Hospital Services
I’ve given to the wounded warrior program in the past many times, and I would hate to dissuade anyone from giving towards organizations that assist our wounded veterans. With that being said, there are more organizations than just wounded warrior to donate money to. It is always best to do your homework first and l leave your emotion out of your decision making process, and treat it more like a business decision. After all, whatever organization you choose, you are still helping a wounded veteran. No matter how many veterans WWP has helped, their overhead is appalling. If this makes you uncomfortable, donate elsewhere.

If you see the TV ads for the wounded warrior project, it is a great cause but a poor way to give. 74 million collected in 2011 and 57 million spent on salaries and advertising. Don not get ripped off by this charity

Hell, my Red Wings might not even make the playoffs this year. They’re third in the league of man-games lost to injury (including their top two players, Zetterberg and Datsyuk) and have been having trouble putting together wins consistently. One upside, maybe, is that they’ve had to bring up their younger talent (the Red Wings organization tends to let players develop in the minors for a pretty long time) and some of those guys show great potential for the future. The experience will be very good for them.

ETA: Not really complaining, though. I of course would love for the Wings to contend for the Cup every year, but they’ve had a great run and even the best teams have to rebuild at some point. I feel pretty good about the future.

Another Canucks fan here, so little sympathy: my guys have been just hideous to watch this year. Utterly listless play and a coach with little imagination and no interest in offense. Until that last game against Dallas, I wouldn’t have believe they could fall into a top-5 draft position. Now…?

Maybe Shero should have sweetened the pot for Kesler, eh? An offer to take Tortorella would do it, I think.
