Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

It’s easier to kill a dangerous animal than a man who just happens to have different thoughts/values than one’s own.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The lights are all blinking red.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

A consequence of cucumbers

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickel?”

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

@mmfa …but paying CEOs even more UN-fairly for their work will make them work harder and create trillions of jobs!

Paying people more fairly for their overtime work will make them work less

Or it might encourage them to volunteer to work that weekend or holiday… I remember union people getting excited about the chance to work overtime on a holiday – triple time. That day went to the senior guys.

The former chief counsel for the Church Committee, Frederick A.O “Fritz” Schwarz Jr., is pushing for a new committee that would investigate secret government, particularly actions by government since the September 11th attacks.

The Church Committee played an instrumental role in the 1970s in calling attention to abuses by the national security state. The Senate established a committee chaired by Senator Frank Church of Idaho to examine the conduct and operations of intelligence agencies.

@Omnes Omnibus: But, these union thugs want to get paid money for working extra hours on a weekends or late nights, or over a holiday, or on short notice because its less trouble for the boss than doing anything else. That doesn’t count as real work. I mean, if you have to pay money for all the work workers do, that just makes them uppity and lazy.

And how are the one percenters going to get aaaalllll the money with a scheme like that?

Anyone have some tips on the best way to loosen up one’s lower back? I tweaked it pretty badly last week (to the point where I was crawling on the floor Saturday)…it feels better, but it’s definitely a lot tighter, and I feel like I generally have less flexibility overall.

Also, too, it’s not new, but time fucking flies when you get older. Nearly a quarter of 2014 is already gone. It’s a bit weird, because I always had a very hard time envisioning myself getting this old. Not because I’m reckless like the ’27’ Club is, but it is just hard to fathom being at an age that I thought was ancient just a decade ago.

What helps me both as a stretch and a strengthening exercise is to do a child’s pose (sometimes called a prayer stretch) and then slowly and gently transition into cobra pose, back and forth about ten times. This video shows you the poses: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xhklne_yoga-cobra-and-child-s-pose-women-s-fitness_travel

If it hurts, don’t do it, either you’re not healed enough yet or your problem is different.

    Ha-ha, suck it agribidnez.

A federal appeals court on Thursday largely upheld a 2008 plan that called for restrictions on water deliveries from California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to protect a tiny, threatened fish.
In a 2-1 ruling, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel said that much of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2008 biological opinion about the Delta smelt was not arbitrary and capricious as a lower court judge had ruled.

The decision won’t have any practical effect on water flows since protections for the smelt were kept in place while the lower court ruling was appealed.

Farmers and water districts had objected to the biological opinion and said Thursday that they were disappointed by the ruling. Restrictions on water deliveries have spelled major losses for growers in the state’s farm belt who rely on the Delta to irrigate crops.

“The ruling gives judicial blessing to regulations that impose real punishment on people with only speculative benefits for a declining fish species,” said Damien Schiff, an attorney for Pacific Legal Foundation representing farmers in the case. “Under these draconian regulations, water is withheld from farms, businesses and communities from the Central Valley to San Diego based on sloppy science and ideological agendas.”

Thomas Birmingham, general manager of the Fresno-based Westlands Water District, said he is considering options for further judicial review. Westlands is the nation’s largest supplier of irrigation water, serving about 600 family-owned farms in California’s Central Valley. The farmers they serve are already grappling with the harsh drought conditions, he said.

Birmingham supports efforts in the U.S. Congress to change how federal laws protecting endangered wildlife are applied to two vast water delivery systems operated by the state and federal governments — the State Water Project and the Central Valley Project.

“It is particularly frustrating that water dedicated to protecting the Delta Smelt has not provided any protection to the species,” Birmingham said. “The population of the species continues to decline.”

Hard work should be rewarded and incentivized. No wait, hard work, working beyond the normal should be provided for free. Hold on, let me reorient myself.

Poor/working class people should take any level wage to create a work culture, and if they’re lucky move up to working long hours off the clock. However, rich people need higher after-tax incomes to incentivize them to work harder. Why would anyone work harder for slightly lower income gains?

Anyway, I’m going to go with “management consultant” and anyone whose title can be described as “advisor”.

Even Gabriel Byrne’s character in Miller’s Crossing? Fucking sacrilege.

And while used car salesfolk may provide a service, they are a consensually villainous group, occupation-wise.

Looks like all the states have something about public education in their constitutions:

State Constitutions and Public Education Governance
    Education Commission of the States
    http://www.ecs.org/clearinghouse/17/03/1703.htm

Wikipedia article on history of public education in U.S. say laws to establish free and later compulsory public education systems started in northern states in 1840s. That is when the rot set in.

Final thought on Ohio Rep Brenner and public education. If the Ohio he is from is THAT Ohio, I believe that it’s formation and admission to the union was governed by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, which required establishment of schools and encouragement of education in the new territories. Not sure much was done to enforce that, but that was the law. The law was explicitly adopted by the new U.S. government under the Constituion.

Some historian expert person can correct me if I’m wrong. Been a long time since I studied in HS, but Wikipedia seems to confirm my memory.

Pain makes the muscles tense up. Which can cause more pain.
Been in a few car accidents. The muscle relaxants worked way better than the opiate pain killers for getting moving. Of course your mileage may vary. And be real careful to mix with etoh. Bad idea

It might be boring, but some may find it interesting. It’s about how being successful in not poisoning ourselves off in the 70’s may have contributed to our current stalemate on big sustainability projects as a nation, right now. I thought it might be a good subject to film on.

I’ve done in my back really badly a couple of times. Once pulled the main muscles on both sides, that was two weeks to be able to get out of bed. About 6 yrs ago I herniated a disc. I now sleep on a solid bed or the floor, otherwise I can’t walk, sit, bend and same problem as you, exhaust the extra stuff with any gusto. Ibuprofen is my friend. So much so that I have to watch that I don’t over do it.
If it’s a muscle issue try heat or cold, probably heat. Not too long at a time. See a doc, probably get some PT.
If it’s a disc, sleep on the floor for a few days. See a doc.

@PsiFighter37: Try stretching your hamstrings. Sit on the floor with your back against a wall, legs in a flat V in front of you. Throw a towel or belt or whatever over one foot, & *gently* pull your torso forward until you feel it in the back of your leg (it won’t take much). Don’t bounce. Hold for a 10 count, then do the other leg, 3 reps each side, first thing every morning & again before bed. It works like a charm for me when the back spasms act up!
