Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

Republicans in disarray!

“Look, it’s not against the rules anywhere, but a black woman with power was dating and there has to be something wrong with that.”

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

“But what about the lurkers?”

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Some Pics of Boghan

Here is my brother Seth and his dog, Boghan, the Wired Haired Pointing Griffon who really is the goofiest and sproingiest dog I have ever met- he bounces around like Disney’s Goofy- doing agility drills. A bunch of good pics, but this is my favorite, as Boghan inexplicably makes the wrong jump and my brother gives a look of pure disgust (and he looks like Louis CK, I think):

boghan5

One thing I realized when I looked at this picture that Seth posted on facebook was that he self-described this as a look of disgust, and I was confused, because 95% of the time that is what he looks like when he is around me. Then I thunk about it for a second and realized why he might have that expression 95% of the time he is around me. At any rate, some good pics below the fold.

Even Terry Mac is finding out that getting Republicans wasted won’t do the trick:

In an interview, the congenitally upbeat Mr. McAuliffe said, “Most people would say I had a more successful session than any first-term governor.”

But William J. Howell, speaker of the House, is not one of those people. “I’ve never seen, Republican or Democrat, anybody come in with so little an agenda and so little attention to the process,” he said.

Asshole pretty much sounds like Mitch McConnell, and McAuliffe has barely been in office for 3 months.

Republican Party platform: prove government doesn’t work by obstructing it when Democrats win, then break the whole fucking thing when we finally are in charge. GOP = Fail Upwards

I just realized I have been waiting all my life to see someone use the word “sproingiest” in a sentence.

@SiubhanDuinne: I guess I made that up, didn’t I? You know what I mean, though, he is like a coiled spring and just bounces around and contorts in mid air in all these odd shapes and is just super happy and bouncy.

FLD. Funny looking dog. Not in a bad way, mind you, just looks kinda pieced together I think it’s the hair ( you can’t really call it fur, can you?)

Reminds me of when my uncle’s sproingy dog ran face first into my pissed off/scared cat, resulting in a mutual sproinging apart of equal height and level of freak-out. I tried really, really hard not to laugh; you know how cats hate it when the joke is at their expense.

    Credit where it is due.

Japan will announce Monday that it will turn over to Washington more than 700 pounds of weapons-grade plutonium and a large quantity of highly enriched uranium, a decades-old research stockpile that is large enough to build dozens of nuclear weapons, according to U.S. and Japanese officials.

The announcement is the biggest single success in President Barack Obama’s five-year-long push to secure the world’s most dangerous materials, and will come as world leaders gather here Monday for a nuclear security summit. Since Obama began these meetings with world leaders – this will be the third – 13 nations have eliminated their caches of nuclear materials and scores more have hardened security at their storage facilities to prevent theft by potential terrorists. I agree with Wag that sproingiest is an awesome word. The pictures are great.

My friends and I took the grayhounds to a Saluki meet one time. They hoping to get some attention for retired racing grayhound adoptions. While the grays couldn’t take part in the various actions, they did let one of them run in the ending race. Sardi (a grayhound) loved being able to run. In one race when she was actively racing, she was clocked at 45 mphs. A bunch of Saluki owners came over and talked to us about the dogs. It was a fun afternoon.

@John Cole: I had one and I can attest to that. We used to let mine run in a local field and it was a joy to see. One day he saw a rabbit and that was it, there was no way we’d catch him. We went home and waited for the inevitable phone call. Sure enough, neighbors a mile away called and said he showed up and befriended their daughters. When we went to pick him up, he was happily eating peanut butter crackers out of the little girls’ hands. But other than the occasional mad dash, he was content to be retired, curled up next to me.

Here’s Coty after he caught the ‘big’ rabbit.

Love the photos of Boghan. He’s a beauty. Although his sister has my heart, with her floppy ear.

@Suzanne: I should amend it to say she isn’t conventionally beautiful, pretty, or cute. She is striking and sexy. There is a difference. Katy Perry fits the conventional model, but is uninteresting. Shirley, otoh, is interesting.

    Who’s a good boy? Boghan’s a good boy!

Rarely see griphons but when I do they’re relentlessly happy, good-natured doggies. Plus, who doesn’t melt at that scraggly mug? Same reason I’m helplessly smitten by Irish wolfhounds.

I love that dog. I want to cuddle him and watch him bounce forever. He’s gorgeous. Really nice pics, JC. Very productive weekend. Ran around doing pickups for the close, because I never think of a closer. Forgot to wear warpaint, so I rightly look tired. But the first mini-doc is done. I’m so happ-well, I’m really more tired and I just realized I forgot to send out emails to all the people I need to interview for the 2nd and 3rd docs. And I finished 2 pages of my new website. But I forgot to braid half my hair and I can’t find the motivation for anything other than lying down. Send in the clones, pls.

Hey, double what Mem said. Anyone heard from our Wa. branch of BJ commentariat?

@Mnemosyne: I’m surprised I didn’t hear about that earlier when I talked to my mom. She gives me all the Washington bad news updates and political reports. I’ve seen many areas around Western Wash. where you look at a hillside and wonder how it’s even holding up. I’ve lived in an area where there was a non-lethal landslide that blocked access to town. It was a miracle no one had been seriously hurt.

That’s the term I have for the contraption the lead singer/guitarist of band uses on about 1/3 of songs. Makes a ‘sproinging’ sound when he slaps it against his leg.
