Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

He really is that stupid.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Republicans in disarray!

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

The willow is too close to the house.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

I’m trying to figure out what the US expects to get from its sanctions against Russia. Crimea? No way. Russian troops withdrawn from Russia (which has been the recent complaint, that Russian troops are near the Russian border with Ukraine)? Don’t think so.

Does anyone here think that they’ll give up Crimea now? Does anyone think that Germany and France will give up on Russian gas, much less China and Japan?

Since Russia is about to sign a trade agreement with Iran, I guess no one really wanted that one to work either. Wonder if anti-aircraft surface-to-air missiles are going to be part of the deal.

I see that the Ukrainian government is attempting to disarm the fascist gangs in order to clean up its image, and that’s a start, but does anyone see Ukraine’s economy doing anything besides collapsing and contracting over the next few years?

Does anyone see the inevitability of a loose federation for Ukraine? How else is this mess going to be solved?

    Just asking.

I can’t really say that the idea of making the oil industry pay their own way for once upsets me. The actual American way is to cut food stamps because the government had to shell out so much money propping up extraction industries.

In the 60s, the comics code very tightly restricted what comic companies felt safe to print. As a result, you got these bizarre, sitcom-like comics where Superman and Batman play pranks on Robin, or Superman uses his Super Counting skill to guess how many jellybeans are in a jar. It was called the Silver Age, for no reason I clearly understand!

What an irritating day all around. I’ve gotten into a Facebook argument with two people I don’t even know over Hobby Lobby. These two are making the argument that Hobby Lobby is exercising it’s religious freedom, to which I replied that Hobby Lobby is an inanimate corporation. “It” doesn’t care if people are using contraception. The owners do.

Since when did so many people in this country start to see corps as individuals with their own thoughts and feelings? Another Facebook friend of mine feels sorry for all the taxes the oil companies pay (No, I’m not joking) and bitches about how unfair it is that people who win the HGTV dream house have to pay taxes on their prize. Good, freedom loving people who are more than willing to turn over their country to Adelson and the Koch Brothers. I just do not get it.

To regard a corporation as possessing personhood isn’t necessarily a bad idea since most corporations do consist of a human population. (The exception would be fake offshore corporate entities created by Halliburton under Liz’s daddy where no humans existed, e.g..) The problem, like the HL situation, is that the corporation (as person) is limiting that definition to apply only to the humanity of it’s owners/ board of directors. Managers, supes, all the little people on the HL payroll are NOT considered in the concept of corporate personhood. Why? These non-persons would be the same ones who would be denied contraceptives or even health care if it offends the religious beliefs of it’s, much smaller in size, governing board. If (s)he has a corporate ID then (s)he is part of the corporation. Yet, they are deliberately excluded. Apparently, democracy has no place in the modern American corporation a la conservative legal thought.

Which is why it’s a good thing the US ain’t alone in the economic sanctions game. For the love of God, sanctions brought IRAN back to the table. I don’t think Russia’s got much of a chance if enough people pile on for long enough.

@A Humble Lurker:Except that Russia has a deal in place with Iran, taking some of Iran’s oil in exchange for Russian commodities. And Europe is not going to sacrifice itself to satisfy the US’s spite here. France just signed a big oil shale deal with Russia.

The problem for the US is precisely that their sanctions aren’t going to hurt Russia because Europe and Asia won’t go along with them. The saber-rattling isn’t going to scare Russia. And now that the fate of Ukraine is in America’s hands, don’t expect Congress to come up with 35 billion to keep Kiev afloat until November.

Also, if the US keeps trying to piss off Putin our astronauts may have to hitch their way back to earth.
