Late Night Open Thread

Just an absolutely gorgeous day today- 75 with blue skies, and Shawn and I took the new and improved family truckster to Lowe’s to pick up some stuff for home repairs, and rocked the Allman Brothers Live at Ludlow Garage with windows down and the sun roof open, just straightening the curves and marveling at how green everything has become in just the last week. Love that version of Dreams, btw:

I am so thrilled with my car. It’s just a great ride, and I can pick good lines and it hugs the road so much that I never have to brake. Plus, just the way it powers out of turns and hugs the road is enough for me. My first big boy car.

Came home, grilled some ribeyes on the grill, soaked some zucchini and yellow squash in soy and ground pepper that I then grilled, tomatoes basil and buffalo mozz with some olive oil and salt and pepper, and some coleslaw.

Oh, had an embarrassing atheist moment at Kroger today. Before I left Bethany to hit the big city, I stopped at the general store for some teas for the ride, and on the door the Sportsman’s club had an ad up for an Easter ham shoot on the 13th. So, I thought to myself, I guess Sunday is Easter, and I will have all the frat boys down who did not go home and make them a big dinner (I used to do the same thing every Easter for all the MA and Doc students who could not make it home when I lived in Motown). Got to Kroger, picked up a ham, and was in the checkout line and said gotta have the ham for Easter dinner tomorrow, and she looked at me funny and said tomorrow is Palm Sunday.

Oops. Guess the boys are getting a ham dinner tomorrow. Got some green beans I’ll cook up with bacon and onions and mushrooms, some knob onions to make creamed onions, some twice baked tomatoes and a garden salad, and a fruit salad.

I really have not felt that stupid in a while. I mean, I’m an atheist, but I should probably be more aware of when the oppressed Christian majority hold their Druidic rituals.

Watching Sons again, because Shawn had never seen it.

*** Update ***

Reminds me of the time I saw the sign on Chambers General Store that said ham or turkey shoot at the Brooke County Sportsman club, and I approached Harry Chambers and said “That doesn’t sound very sporting. You’re just going to release some pigs and/or turkeys (I forget which it was) and then shoot them? How is that even sporting? They all got hysterical and I was a running joke for months when I discovered they were target shooting and the winner got a ham or turkey.

Just got home after several days. Work is done for few days and my girlfriend is slowly recovering from surgery. Upon returning home I saw that someone had decided to spin out on my soggy lawn They left their tiretracks and in tomorrow’s light I’ll see if there a match for Cole’s car. Also, a letter from Superior Court asking me to fill out a jury duty form. Then the bath is clogged. I thought it was draining awfully slow when I left on thursday morning. What, did I say something to piss you all off?

The cook for my fraternity used to come in on Easter Sunday – even though she didn’t work weekends at all – in order to cook lamb for all the stay on campus brothers ( the vast majority of us). She also made a fantastic crab salad with a vinaigrette dressing – I really should have gotten the recipe.

OTOH, she once got the opportunity of getting a bunch a raccoons and she made us a stew. We made her our honorary house mother.

@Little Boots: I thought we were sharing Easter/food/college stories. That was mine. Also, that lady was a goddess. The easiest way for a fraternity pledge to not become any active member was to disrespect her in any way. She had spent her life in the restaurant business and retired. She found retirement boring, so a 2/3 time job cooking at a fraternity sounded like fun for her. She knew everyone in food in the area and always got great deals. We ate like kings. She could drink like a sailor, but abhorred bad language. Simply put, she was awesome.

My son’s preschool is doing metamorphosis for this month’s concept, and got tadpoles and painted lady caterpillars. I volunteered to take the caterpillars during spring break, figuring they’d sit in their cup for a week and I’d take them back. No, as luck would have it, NOW is when they are forming their chrysalises. So it was two cups and one butterfly dome, with five little chrysalises hanging from the top. Two of which fell off on the trip home. Visions of weeping preschoolers dancing in my head, I set out to hot glue them back into proper position (I’m not a sadist; I looked it up on the internet and it’s what is recommended and I read it on the internet so it must be true). I’ve handled snakes, I’ve handled Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and yet I shrieked like a leetle gurl when I picked up the first chrysalis to stick it back in position and it started wriggling in my hand. Ew. My son is already terrified of bugs; I did not help that situation one whit.

But the damn things are hanging upside down again, like they’re supposed to. And it’s kind of cool to watch the other ones that haven’t changed quite yet curl up into a J shape and then form the chrysalis. I just don’t look forward to moving them from the cup to the dome.

So will be cooking for a dozen next Saturday, (only a dozen – the people who shun seafood won’t be there, so can go that route).

Haven’t cooked seafood in ages and am contemplating making a dish I like but it calls for flounder, which is essentially unobtainable here unless one owns a restaurant. Ditto (usually) as far as getting cod. Stumped about a substitute filet that can roll up over a slab of salmon for the dish. Need a mild white fish that won’t clash with the creamy mushroom sauce it’ll be cooked in.

    Any non-snarky suggestions?

Leaning to using ono, if can find it thin enough to roll up rather than in a thicker steak cut. Or maybe halibut, which does show up at the fish market.

No weekly gathering tonight. Using the time to create a recipe for curried Japanese eggplant and carrot pancakes to go with the fish dish and saffron rice with peppers and green olives already planned.

I just saw a wrecker come trolling by and yoink a car parked across the street. This street is permit-only parking, but here in NoVa they apparently have über-stringent laws that have resulted in nocturnal packs of wreckers that prowl the streets and will pull cars out of apartment and condo parking lots for lack of parking stickers or even a license tag expired by a few days. (That happened to a friend of mine.) I’ve never seen the like anywhere else.

Plus this guy tonight bumped the car parked ahead of his prey as he was pulling it out (parallel parking). I’m going to check the car tomorrow morning and, if there’s any damage, leave a note for the owner that I saw what happened.

    Weirdness on the night shift.

I’m out too. I keep listening to Jenny Burton over and over. That song is one that has not been on YouTube in years, and it was nice to find it again tonight.

ETA: If anyone is still up, the original Shaft just started on TCM. It will assuage the pain of the really, really, really bad fight choreography just seen in Disco Godfather.

Thanks, I couldn’t think of one.

For some reason this sort of pisses me off, in that “Fight the power! The Man is downin’ me!” way. What are you supposed to do if, say, you’ve started dating someone and you have that first unexpected sleepover?

I feel bad for the person who’s going to come out tomorrow and find that car gone. Plus I think it’s like a C-note at least to reclaim the car.

Okay, one last scan on the Nexus. All is well. Blog can be safely handed off to the morning shift.

I will now lie here and wait for the housecat to come knead on her faux sheepskin throw, get her claws hung up in it and then get pissed at me when I untangle her. The small routines of daily life.

I did not know there was a 13 coins in SeaTac until reading this thread. Huh.

13 coins is expensive as hell, and open all night, so naturally the strippers who have a good night like to eat dinner there, accordingly.
