… About that Social Media Director. According to NYMag, “U.S. Airways Employee Who Tweeted Plane Porn at Customer Won’t Be Fired”:
… “It was an honest mistake,” a U.S. Airways spokesperson told the Daily News, in reference to what is arguably the best and worst tweet of all time.
“It was in an attempt to flag the tweet as inappropriate” after a random internet troll sent the graphic image to them, the airline rep explained; “unfortunately, the image was inadvertently included” in a subsequent response to a paying customer…
If my first thought is “Social Media Editor either boffing the Chief Tech Officer, or the CEO’s otherwise unemployable son-in-law”, does that mark me as an Old?
Bobby Thomson
Yes.
Roger Moore
Just a realist.
Tommy
I was on a pretty major news site and click over for the story. Said NSFW but I assumed that was just the topic. Right at the top the photo in question. No blurring. I so wish I could unsee that. Glad I did not have any liquid in my mouth or it would have been all over my monitor. I swear you don’t want to see that pic.
Violet
Maybe they figured it’s easier to keep the person on, looking magnanimous and getting lots of positive press for the decision, and then let them go during the upcoming merger.
Hunter Gathers
I’m going to guess that his boss has no idea how them thar computers work. Who hasn’t tweeted an x-rated picture on accident these days?
BBA
Silly me, I thought the tweet was a reaction to being laid off. There’s a merger under way, and the combined US American Airwaylines won’t need two social media directors…
The Dangerman
I’m going for the daily double; it’s the CEO’s otherwise unemployable son-in-law that’s boffing the Chief Tech Officer.
NotMax
Couple of bits which caught the eye.
Well, this is a little step, but a pleasing one.
And this is simply phenomenal.
Tommy
@NotMax: The NPS quote you included is good news. Honestly you’d think this would have happened years and years ago. Maybe it can save them some money, cause I go to a lot of National Parks and they are clearly understaffed. I mean I often felt I could get away with murder in even the popular camping locations cause no staff were there. That of course wasn’t always the case.
lamh36
They released the last new trailer for X MEN First Class sequel and IDK, I maybe fangirling it a bit, but it looks Good…right?

Again I say it’s glad to have Bryan Singer back in X MEN directors chair
Omnes Omnibus
Why would that mark you as an Old? A cynic? Sure. But why an “Old?” And why is old capitalized? I am sure I will have more questions, but those will do to start.
JGabriel
Anne Laurie:
It actually is a credible error. Kind of on the level of someone who clicks on an email attachment and infects the entire network. The end result is an expensive pain in the ass to clean up (from personal experience of being the one who had to organize and supervise such cleanups), but it’s not a firing offense – even if you want to strangle the person who clicked on it.
I’m not saying your analysis is incorrect. The offender may well have relatives or friends (with benefits) in high places, but US Airways proffered excuse is also believable.

@lamh36: Yes it does look good. Very good. But if a movie studio makes a trailer that doesn’t do that, well somebody isn’t doing their job very well :).
JGabriel
@lamh36:
Yes. That one directed by Brett Ratner was a travesty.
brendancalling
@Tommy: it wasn’t THAT bad.
KG
@warren: words, I have none
Tommy
@JGabriel: Surprised it wasn’t JJ Abrams. He seems to be directing or more to the point producing like every show I watch.
Violet
@warren: Bet it got his video a lot of views. Not sure that’ll do him much good if he’s in jail.
Comrade Dread
@KG: I’ve got words that would make a pirate blush, but I won’t print them.
Fred Fnord
@lamh36: I had to read the word ‘fangirling’ about six times before I comprehended it. “Fang? Fang… Maybe she means fingerling? What does this have to do with potatoes?”
Omnes Omnibus
@warren: It is an interesting conceptual idea. OTOH, it is also in terribly bad taste.

Maybe he can share notes on poor humor with Aldon Smith.

I think Jar Jar Abrams has his hands full right about now.

Between the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises, plus whatever shows he still runs on TV, I think Abrams hands are pretty full.
Edited to Add: @Roger Moore: Great minds …

@JGabriel: Yeah, depends a lot on their back-end software, which is usually atrocious from a UX perspective.
Tommy
@JGabriel: I was just joking of course …
That he is doing both the Star Wars and Star Trek is pretty amazing isn’t it. Heck you could easily argue the two franchises with the most dedicated and rabid fan base. Should be interesting to see what happens. The best I hope.
lamh36
@Tommy: I absolutely love Abrams Star Wars series and can’t wait for the last of that trilogy. I was never a fan of the Star Wars “prequels” but i did live the original 3. With how well he did with Star Trek, I’m looking forward to see what he does with Star Wars.
Tommy
@lamh36: I am looking forward to this:
I’ve been playing Civ for like two decades. I can wait for hopefully the same strategy and game play, but not on Earth. Also hope it is on a console. That I can now play Civ on my 60 inch TV with Bose surround sound is a true pleasure.

Omnes Omnibus
@Tommy: Not criticizing at all, but gaming is one of those things that I just don’t grok. Not just computer games… I enjoy chess or backgammon. I liked Monopoly. Baldur’s Gate was fun, but, as a whole, it is something I could take or leave. I get that others love it. I imagine that many people feel about music what I do about gaming. For them, it is a passing amusement. Gaming is that to me. I usually avoid gaming threads to avoid acting like the fake superior guy – I am not above it. It just doesn’t appeal to me. I also stay out of the gardening threads. À chacun son goût.
Roger Moore
@Tommy:
Didn’t you ever try Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri? It was the same general concept as Civ, but with human colonists on another planet.
Tommy
@Omnes Omnibus: No I understand. In fact I don’t really have any of the “popular” games. I kid you not I tend to play games meant for kids. Heck my five year old niece introduced me to my favor game on my tablet/phone. I don’t like the FPS (first person shooters). Civilization can take 40 plus hours to play. That is the only game I have like that. I like to play games for a short period of time. 20-30 minutes as just a break. I don’t want to have to read a manual. Just sit down and play. So I am not like most gamers.
Tommy
@Roger Moore: Nope. I’ll have to look into it. Didn’t even know it existed. Thanks for bringing it up.
Suffern ACE
@lamh36: In the new star wars film, the Death Star will be invulnerable to exhaust port attacks, but completely destroyed by camera flare.
Omnes Omnibus
@Tommy: There are people, though, who love the games. The ones who have their fingers hovering over the order button seconds before a new game is released. I have done the equivalent in my day to get a newly released album or to get concert tickets. I grok the love. I just don’t grok the subject of the love. That was really my point.
Tommy
@Omnes Omnibus: No I get it. That isn’t me. I like games but view them as another form of entertainment, not my life. I know gamers where that is all they do when they are not working. Folks that when a new game comes out they take off work and play like 40 hours straight. There are somethings about me I like that people think are strange. My love of coffee. Books (which is sad commentary on our society). Just not gaming.

Did anybody watch Fargo on FX tonight? Billy Bob Thornton; think it’s a 10-episode series.
They’re re-airing the first episode in about 15 mins. Have opened some red wine and might settle in with it …

I’m glad slack was cut. More than once have I regretted hitting the “send” button, having lived through the birth of e-mail.
The first work e-mail I ever got said, “Your mother sucks cocks in Hell” and the sender and I will STILL laugh about it, some 25 years later.
So yeah, I’d say it makes you an Old.
Tommy
@Elizabelle: Watching it in about 30 minutes. I’ve read some reviews without spoilers and they all seem to indicate it is wonderful. FX put up the shows first 10 minutes a few weeks ago and it did look really good. I can’t wait. Loved the movie!

Sigh, because that srsly is USAir management’s longstanding attitude towards customers, and employees too.
Ripley
@brendancalling: Agreed – I found Last Stand about on par with the first X Men movie, and really enjoyed Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast. X2 was the standout of the original trilogy, and First Class was near great, looking forward to Future Past.
Ratner’s Red Dragon was a hack job though. Edward Norton didn’t help things.

Just saw the Coen Brothers’ The Big Lebowski on a big screen Saturday.
It’s been years for Fargo, and do like me some BB Thornton.
Tommy
@Elizabelle: I though it might be a prequel or something, but it is not. It is its own story. In fact I’ve read the lady that plays a police officer (I don’t recall her name) is going to win a lot of awards cause she is flat out amazing.

@Tommy: Dude. Maybe I have just been on the internet too long. But I saw Tubgirl and Two Girls, One Cup, and this picture was just a toy airplane sticking out of her twat. Practically something to discuss over dinner with Grandma. Wholesome fun the whole family can enjoy.

Not to get down on Tommy (or Cermet (sp?)) but it’s like they’re new. Really really new. Which I had figured had stopped happening sometime in 2005.

Just a little note. If you are not watching Bates Motel on A&E IMHO you are missing out. I came to it late cause, well it seemed like how can you make a show out of this topic. Well they did. It is suspenseful. Creepy. Moves at a pretty fast pace. About done with it and then on to Fargo.
Yatsuno
@Tommy: I can guarantee you one thing:
Lens flare.
Fair Economist
Sigh. Every Civ release is two months of way too little sleep for me. I tried replaying Alpha Centauri a year or two ago and was surprised how the improvements since then spoiled the original for me (notably zapping Infinite City Sprawl). I would like to see an Alpha Centauri update – I enjoyed the Colonization version of Civ 4 – but this looks like they’re planning a different setup.

Things aren’t going well in Asia transportation-wise. First Malaysian Airlines and now:
Tommy
@Violet: I am surprised this doesn’t happen more often. I watch the travel shows were somebody heads to Asian (and other regions of the world) and I see the roads, buses, ferries, and I think to myself, I am not sure I would be able to get on that thing.
Suzanne
@Yatsuno: Hugs. I hope you are digging the new gig.
Yatsuno
@Suzanne: It’s the IRS, which means still a ton of persnickety bullshit. But beyond that it’s light years ahead of collections. Plus it’ll move me closer to my goal job in the Service, so it was worth it just for that.

@Fair Economist:
Played Civ since it was released (On floppies, remember them?) in 1991. I was a beta tester for Civ III. Finally just became tired of it when activating Civ V necessitated having a Steam account. Or, it may have been the fact that strat sims so often boil down to finding the right cookbook strategy.

It was a fun game at the time, but I haven’t played it in over a decade at this point. I have no idea how it holds up. (Of course I still play Civ II, so YMMV anyway in that regard…)

@Poopyman:
Bad article. Of course, it came from a finance news source, so we should expect slop like the sun rising in the east.
Apparently, he was supposed to talk to a financial crimes unit, unrelated to the BK filing. He doesn’t have a personal American lawyer in this very tight subdiscipline, so he’s declined to appear 4/18, and is seeking to make that appearance in May.
He’s a greasy, wormy little fuck, but that seemed like a reasonable delay to me.

@brendancalling: Watch the extra scenes on the DVD of Xmen 3. There is a much better, superior scene and Rattner’s audio is wondering why they didn’t use it in the movie. Hey, he’s only the director, not like he has any say in the matter.
Another Holocene Human
@Tommy: There was a guy who did kill a young lady working in a National Park about ten years ago. He did get caught, though. Very persistent police work.
Did it for the cash in the drawer at the park entrance. ETA: No witnesses.

It seems to me that “it was an honest mistake” is about the best defense the airline could possibly muster in a court of law. Because if it wasn’t an honest mistake, the woman who received that photo will head to trial holding four aces.
