Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This really is a full service blog.

Pelosi: “He either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are.” Why not both?

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Come on, man.

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

I desperately hope that, yet again, I am wrong.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Glad to see john eastman going through some things.

Chutkan laughs. Lauro sits back down.

Open Thread: Maybe Cole Was Wrong…

… About that Social Media Director. According to NYMag, “U.S. Airways Employee Who Tweeted Plane Porn at Customer Won’t Be Fired”:

… “It was an honest mistake,” a U.S. Airways spokesperson told the Daily News, in reference to what is arguably the best and worst tweet of all time.

“It was in an attempt to flag the tweet as inappropriate” after a random internet troll sent the graphic image to them, the airline rep explained; “unfortunately, the image was inadvertently included” in a subsequent response to a paying customer…

If my first thought is “Social Media Editor either boffing the Chief Tech Officer, or the CEO’s otherwise unemployable son-in-law”, does that mark me as an Old?

I was on a pretty major news site and click over for the story. Said NSFW but I assumed that was just the topic. Right at the top the photo in question. No blurring. I so wish I could unsee that. Glad I did not have any liquid in my mouth or it would have been all over my monitor. I swear you don’t want to see that pic.

Maybe they figured it’s easier to keep the person on, looking magnanimous and getting lots of positive press for the decision, and then let them go during the upcoming merger.

Couple of bits which caught the eye.

Well, this is a little step, but a pleasing one.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Clean Cities program and the National Park Service (NPS) recently announced nine new projects to deploy green vehicles within nine of the 13 national parks.

The nine parks–stretching from Maine’s Acadia National Park to Utah’s Zion National Park–will replace conventional internal-combustion vehicles with low- and zero-emission alternatives, including propane-powered trucks and vans, low-speed electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids. Source

    And this is simply phenomenal.

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has documented the formation of a small icy object within the rings of Saturn that may be a new moon, and may also provide clues to the formation of the planet’s known moons.

“We have not seen anything like this before,” said Carl Murray of Queen Mary University of London, the report’s lead author. “We may be looking at the act of birth, where this object is just leaving the rings and heading off to be a moon in its own right.”

It is possible the process of moon formation in Saturn’s rings has ended with Peggy, as Saturn’s rings now are, in all likelihood, too depleted to make more moons. Because they may not observe this process again, Murray and his colleagues are wringing from the observations all they can learn. Source

@NotMax: The NPS quote you included is good news. Honestly you’d think this would have happened years and years ago. Maybe it can save them some money, cause I go to a lot of National Parks and they are clearly understaffed. I mean I often felt I could get away with murder in even the popular camping locations cause no staff were there. That of course wasn’t always the case.

If my first thought is “Social Media Editor either boffing the Chief Tech Officer, or the CEO’s otherwise unemployable son-in-law”, does that mark me as an Old?

It actually is a credible error. Kind of on the level of someone who clicks on an email attachment and infects the entire network. The end result is an expensive pain in the ass to clean up (from personal experience of being the one who had to organize and supervise such cleanups), but it’s not a firing offense – even if you want to strangle the person who clicked on it.

I’m not saying your analysis is incorrect. The offender may well have relatives or friends (with benefits) in high places, but US Airways proffered excuse is also believable.

Baldur’s Gate was fun, but, as a whole, it is something I could take or leave. I get that others love it. I imagine that many people feel about music what I do about gaming. For them, it is a passing amusement. Gaming is that to me. I usually avoid gaming threads to avoid acting like the fake superior guy – I am not above it. It just doesn’t appeal to me. I also stay out of the gardening threads. À chacun son goût.

@Omnes Omnibus: No I understand. In fact I don’t really have any of the “popular” games. I kid you not I tend to play games meant for kids. Heck my five year old niece introduced me to my favor game on my tablet/phone. I don’t like the FPS (first person shooters). Civilization can take 40 plus hours to play. That is the only game I have like that. I like to play games for a short period of time. 20-30 minutes as just a break. I don’t want to have to read a manual. Just sit down and play. So I am not like most gamers.

Folks that when a new game comes out they take off work and play like 40 hours straight. There are somethings about me I like that people think are strange. My love of coffee. Books (which is sad commentary on our society). Just not gaming.

@Elizabelle: Today. Kicked. My. Butt. Since I got reassigned to Field Assistance, I now have to worry about things like filing season. But at least tomorrow the job gets much easier since no more tax law questions.

Things aren’t going well in Asia transportation-wise. First Malaysian Airlines and now:

At least two people have died and 107 others remain missing after a ferry carrying 477 passengers, many of them students, sank off South Korea’s southern coast Wednesday.

@Violet: I am surprised this doesn’t happen more often. I watch the travel shows were somebody heads to Asian (and other regions of the world) and I see the roads, buses, ferries, and I think to myself, I am not sure I would be able to get on that thing.

@Suzanne: It’s the IRS, which means still a ton of persnickety bullshit. But beyond that it’s light years ahead of collections. Plus it’ll move me closer to my goal job in the Service, so it was worth it just for that.

    @Fair Economist:
Played Civ since it was released (On floppies, remember them?) in 1991. I was a beta tester for Civ III. Finally just became tired of it when activating Civ V necessitated having a Steam account. Or, it may have been the fact that strat sims so often boil down to finding the right cookbook strategy.

Defunct bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox files for liquidation: WSJ
    REUTERS — 2:05 AM ET 04/16/14

(Reuters) – Defunct bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox has given up plans to rebuild under bankruptcy protection and has asked a Tokyo court to allow it to be liquidated, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the situation.

These people cited the complexity of the procedure and the lack of realistic rehabilitation plans for the Tokyo-based exchange as reasons for the move, the newspaper said.

Mt. Gox, once the world’s biggest bitcoin exchange, filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan last month, saying it may have lost some 850,000 bitcoins – worth around $454 million at today’s rates – due to hacking into its computer system. It has since said it found 200,000 of those bitcoins.

Mt. Gox’s lawyers declined to comment on the matter.

Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles won’t travel to the United States to answer questions about the bitcoin exchange’s U.S. bankruptcy case, Mt. Gox lawyers told a federal judge this week.

If you’re interested in Alpha Centauri, GOG has it for $6 download. http://www.gog.com/game/sid_meiers_alpha_centauri

It was a fun game at the time, but I haven’t played it in over a decade at this point. I have no idea how it holds up. (Of course I still play Civ II, so YMMV anyway in that regard…)

    @Poopyman:

Bad article. Of course, it came from a finance news source, so we should expect slop like the sun rising in the east.

Apparently, he was supposed to talk to a financial crimes unit, unrelated to the BK filing. He doesn’t have a personal American lawyer in this very tight subdiscipline, so he’s declined to appear 4/18, and is seeking to make that appearance in May.

He’s a greasy, wormy little fuck, but that seemed like a reasonable delay to me.

@brendancalling: Watch the extra scenes on the DVD of Xmen 3. There is a much better, superior scene and Rattner’s audio is wondering why they didn’t use it in the movie. Hey, he’s only the director, not like he has any say in the matter.

@Tommy: There was a guy who did kill a young lady working in a National Park about ten years ago. He did get caught, though. Very persistent police work.

Did it for the cash in the drawer at the park entrance. ETA: No witnesses.

It seems to me that “it was an honest mistake” is about the best defense the airline could possibly muster in a court of law. Because if it wasn’t an honest mistake, the woman who received that photo will head to trial holding four aces.
