Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

I really should read my own blog.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Bark louder, little dog.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

He really is that stupid.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

You cannot shame the shameless.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Question: What do I wear for an Easter Brunch to be held outdoors. It is still cold here in New England.

Coincidentally, I was just giving that album a first listen. I think I prefer them each on their own more than together – I don’t hear anything on this album that beats this or this – but it’s still a solid album.

Gall bladder surgery coming up on Tuesday! I have been calm, but suddenly today I feel nervous. People who have had it, please tell me it’s a piece of (low-fat) cake.

@Ferdzy: Gal bladder surgery these days is essentially an outpatient procedure. A few little cuts in your abdomen and they pull it out through your belly button. You even get to eat your favorite food that evening, as long as it’s not a really tough steak. When I had mine in ’93, one of the first years they did the arthroscopic procedure, the only reason I didn’t go home that day was I was in the Navy and there wasn’t anyone to go home to in the barracks.

@Ferdzy: My father-in-law, in his late 70s, hardly eats, doesn’t take his medications when he should, shuffles when he walks, etc., had gall bladder surgery recently. He was up and around a couple of days later, and not long after that he went to the supermarket with my husband and attracted attention because he was such a ball of energy. (That and he’s a bit… um… unstable, but that’s another story.)

So as surgeries go, it could be a lot worse. Sending hopes for quick and easy healing your way.

Thanks, Schrodinger’s Cat and Belafon. I have had the song and dance about what they expect to do from various doctors. I guess I’m just kind of convinced that I’m going to be one of the “more complicated” cases requiring more invasive surgery, as the Dr who did the scope seemed genuinely impressed by the size and quantity of my stones. (Hm… not sure that sounds right…) But maybe I flatter myself. I hope so.

@Ferdzy: A “giant” gal bladder stone is one that your urinary tract doesn’t like dealing with (they are painful). In the real world scale, that isn’t very big.

Off topic, but it may be of interest to some here: Malaysian lawyer and opposition politician Karpal Singh was killed in a highway collision between the minivan he was riding in and a truck. Karpal Singh, a former chairman of the Democratic Action Party and known as “the Tiger of Jelutong” (the constituency he first represented in Parliament), was 74.

About 100 years ago I was working on Newbury Street in Boston and stopped into a little hole in the wall record store. I bought a 45 (Pylon, I think) and the cover design was raised up and colored gold and the cashier, who happened to be Aimee Mann in her Young Snakes pre-Til Tuesday days, rubbed her thumb along the raised design and said ooh, shiny. I loved her then and I love her now.

I had my gall bladder out 10 years ago. It took me a couple of days before I could stand completely upright due to the stitches, but you get your energy back pretty quickly and you can eat pretty much anything. As surgeries go, it’s kind of a breeze. Good luck, Ferdzy!

@scuffletuffle: Is there such a thing? I will probably wear my blue dress with a cardigan. I have a lovely beaded bracelet that looks like a corsage to go with it and I will pair that with blue topaz and silver hoops.

Thanks, Karen. Your FIL – ha! And, oh dear.

Belafon; urinary tract? Do gallstones exit that way? The one of mine that made a run for it never made it that far – but managed to cause plenty of trouble (3 days in hospital) anyway.

Shakezula, I’ve never heard of lithotripsy for gallstones, just kidney stones. I looked it up and apparently it can be done for gallstones too, but no-one has mentioned such a thing as a possibility.

Aaand, thanks, Di! Glad to hear yours went well.

I heard this on World Café yesterday and found myself as locked in the groove as I was lost on the physics.

Also heard the new single from Chrissie Hynde’s upcoming solo disc. If you’re as ready as I am to finally get your “Dark Sunglasses” out of winter storage – this might be the summer tune for you too.

@burnspbesq: Ooh. . . Nice. I’ve seen Rodney Crowell a couple times at my local watering hole in Buffalo, NY (true story).

I heard a review for The Both’s eponymous record on Fresh Air whilst tote-bagging down I-90 yesterday, and I think I might have to pick it up. I don’t know much about Aimee Mann aside from Till Tuesday and one set of hers I saw at a free concert years ago (which was good, IIRC), but I’ve been a Pharmacists fan for a long time. They put on some epic shows at the late-great Mohawk Place in downtown Buffalo.

    Isn’t Record Store Day tomorrow?
