Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Cole is on a roll !

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

‘Museums aren’t America’s attic for its racist shit.’

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself. We’re allowed to grow past that.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

The revolution will be supervised.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

This country desperately needs a functioning Fourth Estate.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Republicans do not pay their debts.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

This kind of shocked me, because the guy is a clear sociopath, but he really nails this:

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: I agree entirely with Chuck. First of all it isn’t enough to say I don’t agree with what he said. This is a despicable statement. It’s not the statement, you have to disassociate yourself entirely from the man. It’s not like the words exist here and the man exists here. And why conservatives, or some conservatives end up in bed with people who, you know, he makes an anti-government statement, he takes an anti-government stand, he wears a nice big hat and he rides a horse, and all of a sudden he is a champion of democracy. This is a man who said that he doesn’t recognize the authority of the United States of America. That makes him a patriot? I love this country, I love the Constitution, and it is the Constitution that established a government that all of us have to recognize. And for him to reject it was the beginning of all of this. And now what he said today is just the end of this.

And I think it is truly appalling that, as Chuck says, there are times when somehow simply because somebody takes an oppositionist stand, he becomes a conservative hero. You got to wait, you got to watch, you got to think about it. And look, do I have the right to go in to graze sheep in Central Park? I think not. You have to have some respect for the federal government, some respect for our system. And to say you don’t and you don’t recognize it and that makes you a conservative hero, to me, is completely contradictory, and rather appalling. And he has now proved it.

Gobsmacked.

BTW- has anyone started a list of the conservative heroes who have all flamed out? Let’s start a comprehensive list of these assclowns, their praise, and their imminent demise. Joe the Plumber and the witch from Delaware and Snowball Snooki and that idiot who makes that shitty pizza whose name I can not remember are a good start.

As you say Krauthammer is a sociopath. He isn’t an idiot conservative like Sean Hannity. He is smart enough to know that standing with Cliven Bundy is stupid. He is also a hawk which makes him a supporter of the DOD a huge part of the US Federal Government. Since he is a sociopath, I have no idea what his true beliefs and aims are, but he is smart enough to know that attacking Cliven Bundy will help him achieve them.

The Pizza guy is a challenge. I think you mean Herman Cain and are noting the fact that @he was the pizza guy who sought the Republican nomination in 2012 etc” stumped Jeopardy contestants. But you might mean Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan. There is something about conservatives and crappy pizza.

Others in the Witch league of course include Joe Miller who convinced Alaskans to learn how to spell Murkowski (sp???) to keep him out of the Senate. Also Ken Buck, Sharon Angle, Richard Mourdock, Todd Aiken, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich who has flamed out a few dozen times. I think counting politicians is cheating.

James O’ Keefe is a noted conservative hero, misleading video editor, senator’s phone tapper, and sexual harasser of another conservative and a CNN journalist.

A, by no means comprehensive, list that people can feel free to add to:

Joe the Plumber – The everyman hero
    Sarah Palin – Starbursts
Herman Cain – Nine, Nine, Nine! (No, not the video game.)
Michelle Bachmann – Former presidential frontrunner and a WOMAN. Take that Hillary!
Ben Carson – See, we’re not racist we have another black guy
Dinish D’Souza – See , we’re REALLY not racist we have a sorta Asian guy minority
Bobby Jindahl – Look, enough with the racism accusations.. Not sure what Jindahl is…maybe another Asian guy?
Marco Rubio – We even have a token latino guy.
Christine O’Odonnel – We’re also not misogynistic OR Christian Fundamentalist. We have both a woman and a witch.
Todd Akin – Okay, maybe we’re a LITTLE misogynistic
Richerd Mourdock – Maybe a lot.
Rick Santorum – Maybe a bit Christian Fundamentalist
Sam Brownback – Okay, maybe a lot
Mike Huckabee – Okay, we get the point already.
Sharron Angle – Time to change the subject…we’re free market!. Chickens for health care.
Allen West – Don’t forget we aren’t racist.
Rick Perry – We also are really smart. Can count to three and everything.
Cliven Bundy – To bring us back full circle, we represent middle america/the every(white)man out there.

I’m depressing myself at this point. There is drinking to be done and then preparing my body for Dark Souls 2: PC version. Carry on.

Yeah, good for Krauthammer, but why don’t any Democrats or liberals talk like that? It’s all “disappointing” and “shocking” and “I demand an apology.”

    Trigger warning:

I get apoplectic at Sullivan’s ability to never go away, but you know why? Because he’s not the world’s greatest writer or talker, but he talks like this. Flame him all you like – I do too – but the man went on a Sunday show before the 2012 election, looked at an Electoral College projection map and said on air that Romney’s support came from the Confederacy. And when someone got all outraged, he didn’t apologize.

I didn’t mean to make this about him, but really, outside of Alan Grayson, the best criticisms of conservatives come from conservatives. And I hate that.

I had a revelation about Conservatives after hearing about a Kraut op/ed in support of more mental health care after Sandy Hook. Kraut is a psychiatrist, so he knows this, and is able to make the right decision on it. And the Darth Cheney on gay marriage, since his daughter is gay. When they have deep experience, they make better choices. When they have no experience, they make dogmatic choices.

Why this reflexive need to quote some conservative charlatan who once in blue moon expresses something you agree with? Is it some need for Daddy’s affirmation? Krauthammer is no idiot and he’s distancing himself from Bundy because Bundy is radioactive after those remarks. If Bundy hadn’t made those remarks, Krauthammer would likely have been a loyal Fox soldier and member of the amen chorus with Hannity, irrespective of all the stuff about Bundy not recognizing the federal government. Ideological consistency is not a requirement at Fox. One wingnut who saw this coming was Beck, who probably has more intimate knowledge of the open racism of the posse commitatus/sovereign citizen subculture and knew that this would eventually be revealed and embarrass anyone involved. Krauthammer may or may have known the same, you’d have to see if he made prior statements or was conspicuously silent. A lot of Foxers apparently didn’t, which isn’t all that surprising considering they just care about fleecing the rubes and could care less about the details.

One of y’all should take this list, give each conservative flame-out a paragraph and a picture, write an introduction and a conclusion and publish it. Call it “Conservative Heroes” and you’ll get double the sales – half from liberals who’d appreciate a good laugh, half from teabaggers who aren’t smart enough to look inside the cover before buying.

Bill Clinton is more popular than ever despite the blow jobs. Lieberman was always hated so he got kicked out of office. I have yet to see liberals fawn over random morons picked up off the street the way conservatives do.

Does anyone remember that conservative study group, I think from Texas, that tried to get all of the 2012 GOP candidates to sign onto their position paper which asserted that blacks had it better under slavery than under Obama because slaveowners at least tried to keep families together? Not even Santorum would sign on.

I wonder if this is what led Bundy to think it was ok to say what he said.

  91. 91.

    TooManyJens

    April 25, 2014 at 8:46 am

@debbie: Bachmann signed it, though. It was all about how the black family was stronger under slavery than under Big Government. (I would agree that there’s plenty the government has done to undermine black families, but I don’t think my list would look much like hers. Start with the racist criminal justice system and pro-oligarchy, anti-working people economic policy.)

And look, do I have the right to go in to graze sheep in Central Park? I think not. You have to have some respect for the federal government, some respect for our system.

Isn’t this the same camp that thinks public parks are Big Gubmint overreach that takes The Land away from the Righteous Property-Holding Citizenry?

I’m glad that there’s two times a day when a broken clock like Krauthammer is right. But there’s a sudden respect for public entities here that I’m still not convinced is genuine, especially after all the hoopla over ANWR.

Agree, JC is giving Krauthammer way too much credit.

Krauthammer is a neocon, meaning that people like Bundy can never be more than useful idiots to him in pursuit of his dreams of eternal war as a balm to the soul and a boon to the nation. Krauthammer simply jumped in when it became apparent Bundy would not be useful, and did it to the hilt to build up his won cred.

An obscure note on Bundy/heroes: Bundy claims ownership of federal grazing rights. When Reagan was running up the deficit for his end-times defense budgets, his people raised money selling off federal land parcels and land rights. Two-birds-with-one-stone cleverness by James G. Watt. Read the Wikipedia. Chilling. James G. Watt was a conservative darling, but so extreme that when he made a bad joke about affirmative action they dumped him.

Speaking of which, your quotes of the day:

“Far more of the African-American community is being devastated by the policies of today than were being devastated by policies of slavery.” (Arizona GOP Rep. Trent Franks, February 26, 2010)

“You know Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery.” (Dr. Ben Carson, October 11, 2013)

“Our free stuff today is being paid for by taking money from our children and borrowing from China. When that money comes due – and this isn’t racist, but it’ll be like slavery when that note is due. We are going to beholden to the foreign master.” (Sarah Palin, November 9, 2013)

    and

Cockfighting Upends Kentucky GOP Senate Hopeful – Matt Blevin continues to maintain he didn’t know what the Tea Party rally he attended was for, despite all the posters, and despite what the previous speakers were talking about.
New Hampshire State Representative Will Infantine incensed fellow lawmakers when he suggested that the wage gap exists because women don’t work as hard as men do.

I do apologize, youngsters, for dragging this pathetic and potentially tragic historical character back to public scrutiny; the honorable Dan Quayle of Indiana was once one elderly heartbeat from the Oval Office. By the early 90s even most Republicans were trying to forget him. I think the Republican tradition of “It could be worse!” Assassination Insurance began there. Cheney, Palin and Ryan are evidence that it continues. Quayle was the original “Not Ready Not Ready For Prime-Time Player.”
