We’re all getting ready for GoT, and Steve is getting in a last minute nap:
Yes, he’s fat, yes, the chair is ugly, but I seriously have never seen a bigger frame on a cat. Even Tammy’s 33lb monstrosity has a smaller frame (just more bulge). He’s just massive.
Tommy
I will just say I hope we have some dragons kicking ass tonight. Dragons doing anything is cool.
Mike in NC
If they don’t show the frickin’ dragons tonight, I’ll be very pissed off.
ETA: beaten to it by Tommy
Ash Can
Every time I see Steve, just like whenever I’d see Tunch, I want to give him big hugs. I love how he fills up the whole chair. Big floofy kitty cat.:)
Tommy
@Mike in NC: It just seems to me it is time for Daenerys Targaryen army of former slaves and dragons need to stop marching already and kick some ass.
oldswede
John, you should take a trip to Maine. My wife and I have spent several vacations in Boothbay Harbor and these big kitties are all around town. Awesome to behold.
Suzanne
@Tommy: I am getting tired of the Danaerys storyline. Maybe I just miss me some Khal Drogo.
No, I DEFINITELY miss me some Khal Drogo.
Tommy
Can I ask a stupid GoT question? Is the number of seasons going to be the same as the number of books in the series? I ask cause I bought all the books, but I love/enjoy the show so much I don’t want to read them until the HBO show is done with. How much longer am I doing to have to wait :)?
ulee
I’m sure Shawn is ready for a break, from working and all.
Tommy
@Suzanne: Agreed. I feel like she should be the best story line, I mean dragons, but it just doesn’t seem to be moving forward. I don’t need some dude giving her flowers. Or a contest to see who can hold a sword at arms length the longest. Kick some ass and take over some kingdoms already.
JPL
Even though I have access the same way as Scalia, I haven’t watched Game of Thrones. It’s PBS for me starting with Call the Midwife and ending with The Bletchley Circle.
Suzanne
@Tommy: I just want more hot dudes. I love this show, but it is kind of short in the hot-dude department.
Villago Delenda Est
@efgoldman: Well, isn’t that pretty much what every episode of Game of Thrones might include?
As for Steve, well, Maine Coons are big kitties, yes they are!
hildebrand
@Tommy: In theory, there will be two more books. In practice, the show-runners have already said that they will finish the story in their own way if George R.R. Martin can’t pull his head out and finish the bloody books.
Villago Delenda Est
@efgoldman: This woman is an expat Republican National Committee member, is she not?
Tommy
@Suzanne: LOL. And the few there are appear not to have taken a bath in the last decade.
Villago Delenda Est
@hildebrand: ZOMG, then we’ll have a canon controversy!
Fire up the keyboards, boys, we’re going to duke this out at Reddit!
hildebrand
I will say that I am now in the Jaime-Brienne shipper camp (leaving aside the ghastly rape from last week, which seriously dented the show/Jaime’s redemption arc). I want those two to start waging a Shermenesque campaign throughout Westeros.
I really can’t wait for Arya’s next stage of the journey – although Martin needs to bring her story to the proper, satisfying conclusion in the books. That must happen. If Martin screws with Arya, I will be most upset.
Tommy
@hildebrand: Oh I thought there was only one more left. I’d hate they’d finish it and not Martin, but given they can’t wait. I say this because the shows that Martin writes are usually my favorite ones.
Jacks mom
Is Steve really that big? I’ve got an orange tabby, Morris who is the big guy in our house but only because Althea our grey longhair tabby is all hair and then there’s Belz the Maine coon mix that’s just a presence with attitude. Love my kittehs
slag
That cat wasn’t fat when you found him. You made that cat fat.
hildebrand
@Tommy: I do like his writing for the series, but he is seriously tardy in forwarding the narrative in the books.
Mustang Bobby
Enjoy GoT. I’m hooked on “The Good Wife.” Don’t hate me, please.
ulee
Winter is coming, Shawn.
Tommy
@efgoldman: A few of the shows move pretty slow. Plus when Rolling Stone can do an article on the top 40 characters of the show, it can be tough to follow. I’ve watched every show at least once if not more and at times I have to hit pause and think for a second, now who is that character again and how to they play into the story?
Tommy
@hildebrand: He is that. I read recaps of the shows, but any talk of the books I stay away from cause I don’t want any spoilers.
hildebrand
@Mustang Bobby: My wife and daughter love ‘Call the Midwife’. It is a well-written show, but the weekly assault on my tear-ducts is often more than I can handle.
Villago Delenda Est
@efgoldman: I was kidding. I have no idea if she’s an expat RNC member.
But she sure enough could be.
hildebrand
@Tommy: A wise plan. I sat down and read all of the books when I was on summer break. Good stuff, but the twists keep coming.
max
@Suzanne: No, I DEFINITELY miss me some Khal Drogo.
I didn’t start liking him but as barbarians go, he was awesome.@Tommy: Can I ask a stupid GoT question? Is the number of seasons going to be the same as the number of books in the series? I ask cause I bought all the books, but I love/enjoy the show so much I don’t want to read them until the HBO show is done with. How much longer am I doing to have to wait :)?
If I remember correctly, season 4 is second half of book three.

ha ha: your cat always looks stoned
gene108
@Tommy:
No.
Seasons 3-4 are all about Book 3. I guess season 5 will then be Book 4 and who knows how many seasons it will take to cover the books.
The books are really really long and I do not see an editor making them shorter, at this point in time.
@hildebrand:
I hope he winds things up. I’m really scared he’s going to veer off into Robert Jordan Wheel of Time territory, where only the author’s death can force the series to conclude by having another author finish the series up based on the author’s notes.
Iowa Old Lady
@Tommy: I’m not watching the series but I believe last season and this one are both about the same book. The Red Wedding was smack in the middle of either book 2 or book 3, I can’t remember. So already the series is running more seasons than the corresponding number of books. God help us.

This weekend has been cat food weekend. My cat has been giving me hints that she’s sick of eating Trader Joe’s canned food, so I spent yesterday evening online looking for advice on good cat food. The internets convinced me that I should avoid foods with fish (because of contamination and difficulty to digest by cats), that I should avoid any food with carrageenan (a possible carcinogen), and that I should be very afraid of everything. This limits me to about a half dozen brands, all of which I can find close by but all of which cost 3-4 times more than the Trader Joe’s. I’m hoping she likes Evangers and Halo – they’re the only two I can afford on a regular basis. Natures Variety Instinct seems like the best of all choices, but it’s $3 a can. My Halley hates everything so this is not going to go well.
gene108
@Tommy:
That’s what convinced me to get the books after season 2. I couldn’t keep track of why things kept happening and why characters did what they did.
Tommy
@hildebrand: I am waiting to read them cause I love the show. It is my experience that I’ve never read a book that wasn’t a lot better then the movie or TV show so I am so looking forward to them.
BTW: I just started reading the Erago series. I know in some fantasy circles people have just savaged the kid (he was 16 when he wrote the first one I believe), but 300 pages into the first book and I am enjoying it. I think there is a movie, but not seen it.
Tommy
@gene108: Thanks. I kind of thought I read during the first season each season will be a single book. But it is a hit show, so lets face it HBO will most likely keep it going for as long as they can. Or as with Deadwood they cut it off cause all the actors became too expensive.
Tommy
@gbear: My cat is very, very picky about what she will and won’t eat. I am sure the “wet” food I feed her the sites you visited would yell at me about. Canned tuna in water. She won’t eat any of the other “wet” food I’ve tired, and I’ve tried a lot from super expensive to cheap. I kid you not, she licks it, but won’t actually eat it. Plus even name brand tuna is pretty darn cheap.
Tommy
@gene108: I love this about the show. Many of HBO shows and some of the stuff on AMC. That they don’t treat me like I am four year old and expect me to pay attention. Heck on one of the TV blogs I follow they note how many actors, that have movie star quality, are looking at TV projects cause they feel the scripts are more intelligent. This makes me happy cause I hate going to a movie theater.
gbear
@efgoldman: she will meow loudly and pathetically at every hour of the day and night. She will act like I am forcing her to eat poison cakes. She will act like a three year old.

Actually, I love the chair. Reminds me of a pair of wing chairs my grandmother had. Not the same design, but the same general idea and similar colours in the upholstery.
Apologies to the always-tasteful Suzanne who probably hates the chair. But sometimes even the most elegant room* can benefit from a little soupçon of ugly as an accent, n’est-çe pas?
*Not that I’m accusing John of having an elegant room to begin with, you understand.
Tommy
@gbear: I know that experience well. I wanted to feed my little girl the higher end dry food (clearly I’d like her to have a long and healthy life), but she will have none of it. Open revolt. I’ve tried almost every kind and she likes the Meow Mix Indoor formula. About the cheapest you can get, so I guess I shouldn’t complain.

@Anoniminous: Yep. The only movie my kid ever wanted to walk out of – he was so disgusted by its insipidity. (Not certain that that is a word, but it is now, that movie was dreadful.)
gbear
@Tommy: Halley would be in heaven if I fed her nothing but Fancy Feast Savory Salmon (she got a can of that from the vet to get her to start eating again after an illness. It’s like kitty crack). I’m trying to stick with ‘food that had feathers’ to get started. Not sure how this will end up. Halley is 15 so I’d like to make sure she’s not eating stuff that’s bad for her
I should go over and visit The Way Of Cats website. I can’t remember which BJ commenter runs that site…

If you enlarge the picture it looks like one of Steve’s eyes is just slightly open. Sleeps with one eye open, that cat does. Hmmm…. Better watch out, Cole.

Interesting day. Started with a basically nekkid 5 am foray into the ocean outside my door (nice-almost got busted by house security).
Did two dives – reef and vis were awesome. I stayed high – never got below 77 feet, wife (when diving with her, it’s like having no buddy at all) was hovering below at 90-95 feet and using no damn air – hate her for that.
Second dive, we were all harassed to shit by about 3 remoras. They were going for her hair, her safety device and were hitting the back of her neck, trying to latch on and suck. I made the critical error of chivalry to punch the fuckers off her, they then turned their attention to me and kept trying to hit my face. Blew through a solid 500 lbs of air dealing with the little bastards (2 feet long), nearly had to go for the dive knife. Once I settled down and ignored them, they calmed down, at least as to me, and turned on the Italian chain smoker who uses a tank in 25 minutes.
Tommy
@Anoniminous: Yes Eragon. I don’t really watch many movies so I am sure I’ll never see it. I like to joke I am 44 and until about seven years ago I never had cable (often times not even a television). There are so many shows I’ve never seen (just started watching the Wire for the first time).
I should also note that I see Syfy is going to actually produce a few fantasy shows next year. Oh and the first episode of Salem on WGN has my hopes up. I mean what dude (which I am one) doesn’t like “hot witches?”
lamh36
Just saw The Other Woman with my nephew and my cousin. It was better than I thought it would be, but definitely NOT great. The thought I was left with after the movie, Cameron Diaz is really starting to look her age. She def NOT the Charlie’s Angels Cameron, and I hope that’s okay with her. The bitch can still wear some fierce heels though. Oh, and Nicki Minaj should never speak in that New Yawk voice ever for any extended period of time. It will grate on your nerves!

If they are the usual SyFy quality – think “SHARKNADO!” – methinks giving them a miss is high on the agenda.

@gbear: I will just say take those sites with a grain of salt. I had another cat die very young (under two). Totally fine to sick to here the vet said the best thing I could do was euthanize her to ease her suffering.* Urinary tract infection off the scales. I was scared to death maybe it was something I feed her.
I headed to a few sites online and jumped into some forums to try and learn more. I had two take aways. (1) The first is the most expensive stuff, like Scientific Diet is not as healthy as you think. Vets carry it, but they get huge kickbacks. (2) There are vegan trolls on these sites. People that think it is pet abuse to feed your cat anything with an animal product in it.
I guess in a long winded way I came away from these sites both mad and more confused.
*I know think she might have gotten into the one room in my house I NEVER let me cats into and she licked some toner for my laser printer. Super toxic stuff.

@Tommy: Yep, trying to learn about anything online is courting confusion. I’m sorry about your kitten.
Tommy
@Anoniminous: Well they were “sources” from the channel, I mean what else are they going to say, but that next year and moving forward they are going to try and go back to their roots. That would make me happy. I mean you look at a show like Helix, started off wonderful IMHO and then quickly got so “campy” I don’t have words for it.
I assume from your comments you are a science fiction and fantasy person like myself, and there is so little of it on TV (or at least any good). You’d think if they just produced OK shows they would have great ratings. An example. I wanted Believe to be good. Resurrection. I’ve already stopped watching both of them. Stopped weeks ago.
Ash Can
@gbear: I believe that Werebear runs that site. And it’s a dandy.
Tommy
@gbear: Thanks. My vet is wonderful. Nice living in a rural area where your vet might work on your cat, then later in the day a cow, pig, or horse. With my kitten I was just happy she didn’t bleed me dry. She openly said they could try to treat her problem, but she’d never have a good day. Just not bad days. She in a roundabout way said that I had taken in her from a shelter. Given her a good home and that maybe the best thing I could do was ease her pain. Might make me feel good to try and “save” her, but alas not the best for the animal. She is buried under a tree I planted out front of my house. It is a pretty tree.

@Cassidy: I have to admit Naked & Afraid is quickly become about my favorite show on TV. I am an avid hiker and camper and usually these shows, well I don’t find them that interesting. This one, well I find it very interesting. I love how many of them think they are “bad asses” and can do anything. Then they get out there and are like WTF, I am in over my head.
For those that don’t watch it they have to spend 21 days with no cloths and basically no support in any way in isolated places in the middle of nowhere. Last week the two (a man and a women on each show) didn’t even make it five days.
Cassidy
@Tommy: I wanted to like Believe as the male lead is a 3rd ID guy who fell into acting by accident. The show sucked.
Mike in NC
Where in Westeros is Dullsville located? I snored through tonight’s episode.
P.S. Mad Men sucks, also too.
Cassidy
@Tommy: Same here. I know survival isn’t easy and have done my fair share of training in it. I love watching the military “badasses” do everything wrong against what we’re taught.
Tommy
@gogol’s wife: You are more than welcome. I try to mention a few of those things as often as possible, cause many of the talking heads on TV have NO clue what they are talking about.
One another note you should pick up Tom Clancy’s new book (came out in December 2013) Command Authority. The book is literally exactly what is happening in Ukraine now. The US response is about the only thing I can think of we could do. Just a few Army Rangers on the ground. A few attack helicopters. Paint the Russian tanks with lasers and hit them. Not to stop them exactly, but maybe give the Ukraine military a chance.
But of course that isn’t reality. It is a novel, not the real world.
Pogonip
@Tommy: Don’t read book 5 if you’re a Dany fan. It’s not her most shining twelve hours. Likewise for Tyrion.

@gene108: I recall reading that Martin has instructed his executors not to give his notes to anyone. However that was before he signed a contract with HBO.
Tommy
@Cassidy: I hope nobody dies on one of these shows, but my gosh we’re getting close. Those two people last week should not have even be allowed out there. It was like watching a train wreck. I didn’t want to really see how terrible things got, but I couldn’t pull my eyes away from it. Guess that is what the producers are going for :).
I just feel like for ratings, it is better when they fail. And they are going to keep putting people out there that are not experienced enough to do it, and somebody is going to die.
Tommy
@Cassidy: Oh I just have to add this little note since you watch the show. I think they have no idea where they are going, therefore can’t read up on what they can and can’t eat from a plant point-of-view. But they know one thing no matter where they are going. They need fire. Fire to boil water. Fire to cook. Fire to stay warm. Fire.
How do you go on this show and not know how to make fire like ten different ways? Even with some pretty advance fire starters a few of the times it has taken them days and days to make a fire. I just don’t know how this is possible. In my backpack I have about 3-4 different ways to make fire. Without it you die.
lurker dean
@Tommy: totally know the feeling, we tried to feed our cats the high end stuff too for a while, but they hated it. we found a compromise, purina proplan, that they like, i believe it’s purina’s highest end and has a lot of protein (40%+) and supposedly less fillers and less of the bad types of ingredients. we also feed them purina pro plan wet every day so they’re not on a pure dry diet, which isn’t good. i figure i don’t force myself to eat healthy food i hate, so i won’t force them to, i’ll feed them something reasonably healthy that they at least like.
CaseyL
I saw a few episodes of “Naked and Afraid” because the people I was visiting were watching it.
I found it fascinating, but too… I don’t know, revealing? I don’t mean the nakedness, but watching people get put into truly dangerous situations for entertainment value is just too Circus Maximus for me. I don’t watch reality TV, ever, so maybe my sensibilities aren’t sufficiently blunted. (After all, I do still watch professional football…)
Can we talk about GoT? Or are we observing an embargo until everyone who can see it has seen it?
Tommy
@efgoldman: Of course I know that. It is also very hard to tell how serious some of the problems are and if the producers are just playing it up for “good TV” (which of course they are). But last season a guy ended up in the hospital for a week or two. The two people last week didn’t last five days. They were smart enough to tap out early, cause I hate to think how bad things would have gotten if they stuck around. They had no business being out there.
My main point was that it is “good” TV when people epic fail. My gut is they will keep putting people out there that have no business being out there for “good” TV. Somebody is going to die. Mark my words.
Cassidy
@efgoldman: Well, let’s see, one guy contracted malaria, his partner had extreme abdominal pains and was evacuated. Appendicitis was ruled out, but could easily have been diverticulitis. Regardless, the remoteness causes long transport times. One guy had a pretty severe 1st degree sunburn which combined with severe dehydration can get real bad real fast. So yeah, there are safety measures in place, but bodies in starvation can crash quickly. And of course the wildlife, venomous snakes, aggressive fish/ eels, etc.
It is only a fucking tv show, but it’s actually got some serious possible consequences.
John Weiss
@Tommy: Tommy! Read the books! Now!
The books expands the show and vice-versa. Also, Rail Road is a fine writer.
Tommy
@CaseyL: No we can’t. Just starting to watch GoT.
I totally get the Circus Maximus thing about Naked & Afraid. As I noted above I am a huge hiker and camper. Nothing super extreme, but I also don’t usually use a camp site and often hike way into someplace. So I find shows like this amazing.
But I will admit there is a part of me that does like watching idiots make stupid mistakes.
Tommy
@Cassidy: There is another thing. The first short season most people made it out. This year the exact opposite. Most are not making it out. Makes me think they know that failure is more popular then success for ratings and, dare I say it, they have lowered their standards for the skill set needed to be on the show. Or at least that is my thinking.
Cassidy
@Tommy: you should check out Dude, You’re Screwed.
Cassidy
@Tommy: I don’t think it’s really a lowering of standards. I’ve noticed that they’ve focused more on camera friendly. I think they’ve picked more extreme locations and basic survival skills doesn’t always cut it.
Tommy
@Cassidy: I did. I actually felt that show was 100% pretty much fake. I can’t put my finger on one exact reason I felt that way, I just did. You are also I think right about more extreme locations. I am not remotely saying I could make it in any of them, but I’d rather the first year locations then the second year. Well honestly put me anyplace other then a freaking jungle. My experience in Belize and a few other places, jungles are never good places to be stranded.
Jeffro

I haven’t seen the movie but I got the same impression from the commercials I’ve seen on TV and some interview with the cast for one of the entertainment shows. She’s definitely aged. Leslie Mann (also in the film) is a year older than her but looks younger to me.
CaseyL
@Tommy:
No problem. It’s strange though: I’m on the West Coast, but Xfinity-Comcast airs GoT multiple times over the evening, with the first airing being 6:00 pm local time (i.e., 9:00 EST). This odd because apparently Comcast doesn’t do this for other West Coast markets (I’m in North Seattle) otherwise everyone here would watch it “early”.
Tommy
@Jeffro: It is horrifying on so many different levels. Lets just put aside we shouldn’t do that to other humans, any person that seems to know anything about gathering intelligence will say torture doesn’t work.
I like to think I am a little bit of a badass. I might be able to resist for a little, if for no other reason then you were pissing me off. But I’d break in short order. I’d then tell you anything to make it stop. Tell you want I thought you wanted to hear even if it wasn’t true.
And of course, that is what happens.

@Tommy: it’s that the danger element is played up, but doesn’t really exist. We all know those guys are in no serious danger. At least with N&A, the producers are going to let the contestants eat whatever their starving minds say they’re willing to ingest, parasites be damned.
Tommy
@CaseyL: Just a random thought. I wonder if they will be able to finish the show with the current cast. People on it are becoming stars. They are going to get movie deals. Bigger parts in a TV show. Or they will just want a lot more money. That seemed to happen with Deadwood. Maybe with Rome, but I think that was more the sets, that were just super expensive to produce so they canned the show almost overnight.

Shawn will get up. Won’t get a job. Cole will cook him breakfast.

Double posting the truth.

@ulee: You may also feel free to eat a bag of salted dicks. The situation between Shawn & JC are the business of Shawn & JC. Not yours. Not mine.
Tommy
@Cassidy: It is very hard for me to tell the level of the danger. Clearly the show is carrying insurance and there have to be layers of safeguards in place to keep said insurance. Recall that photo years ago from Bear Grylls? On the show he was saying it was in the middle of nowhere. Then a photo hits the Internet where like a five star resort was in the background.
If there is one thing I think might be fake about this show it is that they are in the middle of nowhere like they seem to present. I can’t believe they are that far from a road, town, hospital. If you get bitten by something. Eat something you shouldn’t. Drink terrible water.
Well if they can get you to a hospital you are going to live. It might suck. You might get really sick. But you live.
Tommy
Another TV thought for other fans of good TV. Anybody else see Salem last week? Just about half way through GoT and then watching the second show. I don’t know why, but generally speaking I don’t like “period” shows. I like the modern world or the future world. But watching Salem last week I was like wow, they are going to be that over-the-top. That violent. That sexual. Almost felt like I was watching a show on HBO or Showtime, not WGN.
ulee
@Yatsuno: Shawn is job hunting.

But no one’s going to complain about the war on the meaning of their own Sacraments by theoretically co-religionists, they’re too busyoff co-opting Easter Bunnies and whining about Holiday Greetings.
CaseyL
@Tommy: I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think cast availability will be a huge problem because filming each season of GoT only takes 4 months, which gives the cast time to do other stuff during the rest of the year. The actors seem to genuinely love doing the show, too, which helps.
That seems to be the model for a lot of cable TV now: shortened seasons, spaced almost a year apart. (Or, in the case of BBC’s Sherlock 3 episodes, spaced 2 years apart. Dammit.) I don’t know how much that’s driven by the need to keep the actors content by giving them lots of time for other projects, and how much by how expensive the shows are (esp. the SF/fantasy). It’s been surprisingly successful, in that fans do come back each season rather than losing interest over the intervening months.

@James E. Powell: I tired to get into the show and never could. Watched only the first season a year or so ago. Strange cause I am an ad agency guy. I worked with people that worked in the time that Mad Men was done, and well to hear of those times I guess I expect more and/or something different from the show.
You might call it the “Golden Age” of advertising, but basically there were just no rules. Lots of sex. Anything goes.

Since this is an open thread: Got my A1c test results back. My endocrinologist wanted to see what it was, even though it hasn’t been 3 months since my last one yet, because my blood sugar numbers have been so consistently low since I started what I’ve been calling the John & Steve diet. (Not really what John has been posting that you guys have been eating, but the dietary changes I made based on the Google and what has been posted on the Type II diabetes threads here – just to be clear.)
Anyhoo, my A1c was 7.2!!!! That’s after 10 weeks of the new diet, and my last A1c was 13.
So thanks again to the folks on this blog. You guys helped me make a big turnaround very quickly!

@Original Lee:
We got your drift—although the “John and Steve” diet would be interesting. Keep up the good work!

@Jeffro:
I don’t think Ms Satan Palin needs a coach from moment to moment. Just working on instinct will work fine for her. Once she gets into a crack, then Satan can come in to coach her out into the flats.
