Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Not all heroes wear capes.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

In my day, never was longer.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

I was promised a recession.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

I really should read my own blog.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Everybody saw this coming.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

I owe somebody a hat tip for this cheery little mood-lifter. Gawker Wonkette‘s Doktor Zoom reports on the camo-clad friends of America’s Most Notorious Welfare Rancher:

We have what appears to be an Important Update on the Bundy Ranch Seige that is no longer a Seige, although the good people of nearby Bunkerville, Nevada sure are tired of all these militia yahoos hanging around their town. And according to a piece at Daily Kos, even the militia folks are getting tired of each other…

First off, Stewart Rhodes, the head of one militia contingent, the Oath Keepers, said on Friday that he’d gotten “intel” from a highly placed source that Eric Holder and the Department of Justice were going to launch a “hot drone strike” on the Bundy Ranch, because that makes perfect sense. And while Rhodes suspected that the leak may have been deliberate disinformation designed to make the militia heroes look delusional, or more delusional, he also decided, as a precaution, to “evacuate all of his Oath Keepers that have been stationed” at the Bundy Ranch, for, like, security and stuff. This decision did not sit well with “Booda Bear,” the “head of security” for the Bundy Ranch. (Who made him “head of security”? We have no earthly idea; we get the impression it may be a self-appointed position, but who knows?)

In a YouTube interview with some super-patriot named Blaine Cooper, who asked Mr. Bear for a “sitrep.” That is SO AUTHENTICALLY MILITARY and COOL! The sitrep was that Booda Bear was not especially impressed by Rhodes’s “high value intelligence” — which turns out to have come from an anonymous tip line. Bear also emphasized that such defections are bad for the tactical situation, since “this is a battle front in some sense of the word and to remove them is kind of ah — that’s some yellow cur — ya know, spineless backbone, piece of shit maneuvering right there.”…

And so, since the Oath Keepers chickened out (in another very important video, the Booda Bear Loyalists take a vote and agree that it was “desertion” — swear to god, it is like watching goddamn Teddy Roosevelt and the fucking Rough Riders storm Omaha Beach during the Battle of Bunker Hill here, tell you what), Mr. Booda Bear proclaimed that since he and his guys “sleep in the dirt out here, we’re on shifts for 14hours a day and trying to make sure that this family [the Bundys] stays safe and secure,” there were going to have to be some changes made…

Much more at the link, including an oath so risible I hope it next appears coming from the Bradley Cooper character in this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is actually intended to be a wacky action comedy.

They’re now running checkpoints on the highway in and out of Bunkerville… probably waiting for Donald Sterling to show up since he’s got nothing better to do now.

For those of you who are not into military jargon, SITREP is a “Situation Report”.

It seems the Oath Keepers may have more sense that Booda Bear. The Bundy Hill is not worth falling on your sword over.

Great, now the DRONEZ are the weapon of choice for the implementation of Agenda 21. Oh well, it makes logistical sense. The FEMA camps are a huge ongoing expense, and dronestrikes on the heroic freedomfighters that have the balls to take on State Power is a more cost-effective way to enforce the New World Order. Plus they make less noise than helicopters.

In a YouTube interview with some super-patriot named Blaine Cooper, who asked Mr. Bear for a “sitrep.”

You’re stuck on the outskirts of an ass-end exurb of fucking Vegas in a totally indefensible position, ‘protecting’ a nutbar from grazing fees and listening to him whine about not getting subsidized with enough free grass and otherwise stuck overcompensating for erectile dysfunction. Your poor excuse for a unit is dysfunctional (as most militia units were even back in the good old Revolutionary War days but those guys knew what they were doing at least), and the best you can hope for is total ineffectiveness. If you actually succeed in drawing the Feds in to attack your indefensible position, you will lose, because you are hopeless outgunned and outnumbered, and you will get the Darwin Award you are so desperately seeking – or time in the Federal pokey.

The Feds are smart enough to let you guys wear yourself out and then will do whatever number they decide to do on you. No one will actually rally to your cause because you are a fucking idiot. In fact, my only complaint about Federal inactivity is that they haven’t opted to snipe any cows that happen to wander onto Federal land. Bundy is stupid and will no doubt keep trying to send cows onto Fed land so they shoot the cows and then the cows will die and then Bundy will have no money. Because all the capital in a given ranch is tied up in stock. (The alternative version is that the militia guys will appoint themselves cow protectors and opt to spend the night on federal land with the cows which means they will all be pookered out, spread out all over hell and creation and easy to arrest for trespassing.)

You’d have done better to have a cake and cookies fundraiser for Bundy to pay his outstanding fees an fines, considering how much money you guys are burning on sleeping in the dirt and hugging cows in the middle of the Nevada desert.

In short, the Muslim guys in Anbar have it all over you (which should be pretty sad considering that all they own are goats and cheap knock-off AK’s and had incomes of a couple of thousand a year at most) and they had a better case.

    Have a nice day!

@max: The one things these guys have learned from Ruby Ridge and Waco is to show up with a large enough force as that will neutralize federal action. A force in the hundreds is too much for police action (even the FBI).

The thing they haven’t learned is everything that comes after that because everyone at Ruby Ridge and Waco were killed. They know how to stop it from starting. But they still don’t know how to end it.

I guess this is National-ish news. This guy, Byron Smith in a town down the road from here, just got convicted for the execution murder of a couple kids who probably were breaking into his place to steal some of his stuff. The thing is, he was kind of expecting them, since he had a tarp laid down, had a tape recorder on at the time, removed some light bulbs, and was waiting for them sitting in a chair at the bottom of his basement stairs with a loaded gun.

The local gun nuts are having a real meltdown, as Smith was their big hee-row, but it turns out the jury didn’t think snuffing a couple of kids was a proper way of dealing with burglars.

I gotta tell you, I got a really creepy vibe off this case from the day the news broke. I’m glad he’s been taken out of society, but I wonder how many others like him are out there, rubbing their hands together waiting on their big chance

    @? Martin:

The thing they haven’t learned is everything that comes after that because everyone at Ruby Ridge and Waco were killed.

    Not true.

Quite a few survivors at Waco, and a few of them ended up convicted of felonies. A lot of 40-year sentences handed down originally, many of which had 25 years lopped off on appeal.

At Ruby Ridge, Randy Wearver’s wife and son were killed. Weaver, his three daughters and his buddy, Kevin Harris all walked out. Weaver was convicted on two counts out of ten. One conviction was set aside by the judge. Weaver was fined $10K and sentenced to 18 months, but got credit for time served plus 3 months- he walked away after the sentencing. Kevin Harris wasn’t convicted on any count.

Then the Weavers and Harris sued, and all got settlements from the government.

They know how to stop it from starting.

Do they? There’s a vast difference, imo, between what happened at Ruby Ridge and Waco, where residences were besieged, and Bunkerville, where the BLM was on federal land removing someone’s property from where the owner had been judged to have no right to put it.

@andy: I saw an article about this and then made the mistake of looking at the comments beneath. Lots of pissing and moaning about how Smith was merely trying to protect his castle from a couple of “thugs”. One guy even ventured the opinion that the case would have been a “slam dunk” for the defense had the teens in question been black, only to be corrected by another commenter who started ranting about Zimmerman and how hard done by he was at the hands of Sharpton and the PC Police and the Kenyan Muslim in the White House. *sigh*

Interesting parallels between Bundy and the War of Canudos. Mario Vargas Llosa’s “War of the End of the World” is the fictionalized version, and the actual reportage is “Rebellion in the Backlands” by Euclides da Cunha.
The parallels aren’t exact, though, and I don’t see Bundy ending up the same: he’s going to end up in the slammer with a bunch of his friends. They’re going to be surprised when it happens.

Given his ego, which would seem to be about the size of Jupiter, one would think there’s only one chief of security at Chez Bundy, that being the deluded old fool himself. But never mind that for the moment….these guys are starting to sound like the Arizona Minute Men, whose solidarity ended up cracking apart like a dropped egg. Going way out on a limb, It shouldn’t be a shock if some of the same people are involved. Could it be this is a hobby for some of them? Interesting scenario for a job interview:

“What are your interests and hobbies?”

“Well, I load up my personal vehicle with camping gear and semiautomatic weapons and drive around to wherever Fox News tells me people are needed to act like assholes and be popup targets for law enforcement officers.”

It does make me wonder, though; don’t these people have jobs? Don’t they have families? In short, do they have nothing better to do with their time? Yes, he shot them again even after they were already down. Yes, he waited a day before calling police. But he was in his own home, they were intruders committing a felony (burglary), and he had no way to know whether they were armed or not. I do not condone his actions, but I am surprised at the verdict.

Could it be this is a hobby for some of them?

Yes. They are basically engaged in some “Red Dawn cosplay”. It’s a giant role-playing game for these clowns – they get to pretend to be brave heroes standing up to the evil sociamalist gubbmit while not actually doing anything at all other than hanging around with their buddies, drinking beer, showing off their weapon collection and telling stories about how oppressed they are by minorities, women, and the communist government that is run by minorities and women.

Honestly – if someone could have introduced these guys to Vampire the Masquerade or the Society for Creative Anachronism or maybe even Civil War re-enacting when they were younger, they’d at least have a healthier outlet for their fantasy cosplay fun.

This whole thing started over about $1 million in unpaid grazing fees. For the Federal government this is pocket change, and it’s not worth mounting a response that will cost tens of millions of dollars and several lives. Bundy has chosen to put himself out of business and eventually, he’ll pay his fees, fines, and probably do jail time. Let the yahoos sit out in the desert as spring becomes summer and let nature do the work of wearing these morons down. Use them as subjects for military surveillance exercises. As for the “checkpoints” on public roads, it’s up to the county or state officials to deal with it.

So here’s a great idea. Why don’t the sides all gather together and talk? The people in the east want a federation. That seems like the best that Ukraine is going to get. But they better hurry, because the Poles in northwest Ukraine want to secede too.

@fubs: I had wondered about the sanitation issues at Rancho Bundy as well. Having enough water, outhouses/sewer capacity for this many people long term is an issue, or perhaps a bunch of sagebrush is now suffering from urine overdose/poop burial. I doubt any of these self-deluded heroes were willing to do the scut-work of digging latrines, though maybe a few days into their siege they realized the need. If not, the coming heat of the Sizzling Nevada summer will make this quite obvious.

The Feds will wait them out, after all, Nevada summers are brutal and heat makes tempers even shorter so there will be even more turning on each other. Let them posture and spit; sooner or later most will need to go home and make a living. No doubt the moles in the group are doing a fine job of collecting names and getting hints on how long the individuals can afford to hold out, and perhaps getting a few good deals on under-market priced gold coins as provisions grow thin. Keep these nuts simmering all the way through November, just so the less-informed can get a better look at the modern Rethuglican party. At some point they will say or do something that falls onto the pathetic/laughable side of the ledger, and the whole country can point and mock (very effective on the small-peened/handcockians).
