Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

You cannot shame the shameless.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Republicans in disarray!

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Always the victim:

So let’s just start with, we don’t agree on the facts,” Nye responded. “This third report came out, saying it’s very serious, you say no. There’s the essence of the problem, S.E.”

Cupp then interjected to call scientists bullies.

“Isn’t it a problem when science guys attempt to bully other people?” Cupp asked Nye. “Nick here had to say, ‘I’m not a denier.’ He had to get it out: ‘I’m not a denier.’ Because really, the science group has tried to shame anyone who dares question this, and the point I’m trying to make is, it’s not working with the public.”

Using facts to tell people they’re wrong is the new Westboro Baptist Church picketing funerals of dead soldiers.

If I had the option, I’d start calling her “Alice” or “Mildred” in these debates. And when she objected, I’d claim that her name wasn’t a fact, that my opinion on her name was as good as anyone else’s, and that she was bullying people by insisting on her “facts”.

But then, her intended audience wouldn’t get the point.

I know that my fondest memories growing up as a nerd were the times that me and my posse would beat up athletes, take their lunch money, and stuff them in lockers.

Also, does SIppy Cupp have an actually first name, or is it really just ‘S.E.’?

This aggressive, unapologetic ignorance is nothing new. Back in Watergate days there was a GOP Congressman named Landgrebe from southern Indiana who, when presented with evidence of Nixonian perfidy, said, “Don’t confuse me with the facts. I’ve got a closed mind.” Difference was, he became in instant laughingstock, and even though he was from a pretty red district he got voted out next time around.

@ranchandsyrup: Fucker Carlson went to my buddy’s prep school, and showed up (uninvited) at one of our parties in North County (mid 1980s) and came within an inch of getting his ass seriously beaten. To call him “deliberately annoying” would be the understatement of the year.

He really should have thanked me. I kept him and his two bros from getting a world-class beatdown. He had no idea. I got the vibe that he had no idea that anyone would even consider hurting him.

Knowing what I know now, I didn’t do him any favors (although “doing him a favor” was the last thing on my mind). A beating would have improved his attitude considerably, I’m thinking. But then some of us would have ended up in jail, and he would have gotten off as “the victim”.

‘Facts’ are very low on the list of things that motivate Ms. Cupp. Prejudices, beliefs, resentment, projection, etc. I guess Nye hopes that whoever he’s debating will say something so stupid that it goes viral– so this is a win for Nye. I don’t envy him, though.
