NHL playoffs year-in year-out the best spectacle in North American sports. Let’s go Bruins! Game 7’s are pissah.
ronin122
JC not to pour salt in the wound but what do you think is missing from the Pens? I mean they’re always a top 3 team in the East and two years ago they get snuffed by a team that played with a good defense and a brick wall for a goaltender. Can’t say I was rooting for them but at the same time I expected better last few years.

I’m guessing Bylsma’s gone after this series loss.

The are not Pens. They are Penguins. They are comical flightless birds who look like they are wearing tuxedos. This is why they lost.

Sorry John, I really would like to see your Penguins in the SCF with my Blackhawks. That would be entertaining.

The Penguins haven’t done well under Captain Crosby. They keep melting down in the playoffs, year after year. I suspect they need a different leader, he’s a great sniper but he doesn’t have the maturity and the resilience and the emotional depth to lead that team.

There is a growing problem in the world of bananas. I’m not certain what it is. Your standard Cavandish banana hasn’t had sex in years and now is threatened by a fungus.

United States of Tara – not sure I liked how it ended but it had to end when it did.
Other short-lived shows I’ve binge-watched – not necessarily brilliant nor a definitive list.
– Awake (Netflix) – possibly brilliat
– Life on Mars (first the US version (Netflix), then the UK version (which was better – no longer free on Amazon Prime)
– Endgame on Hulu Plus – not that great but entertaining
– Alphas (Netflix) – not brilliant but i liked it
– Dollhouse – Netflix – okay totally not brilliant but redeemed by the two end of season “epitaphs”
– Firefly – had to say it

Question for the BJ Hive Mind: Should I submit to the rituals my MIL wants me to perform?
They will be in Sanskrit and I won’t understand what the heck I am doing. Blaming Fleury for the Penguins problems means that you haven’t let go of previous years rather than analyzing what just happened. He was fine in this series. The problem is that his team stopped scoring. And, really, who are you going to replace him with? Ryan Miller at a ridiculous price after he was mediocre in his own team’s early playoff exit? Jonas Hiller, who just lost his playoff job to a guy who’d played a total of three games in the NHL? Jaroslav Halak, who the Blues replaced at exorbitant cost with Miller?
There aren’t any franchise goalies available. And you’re already committed to paying Fleury $5 million next year and if you decide that he’s not worth it, why do you think anyone is going to take him off your hands without charging you for the privilege?
Pittsburgh’s solutions are going to have to come elsewhere. My advice would be finding a third line that can actually get something done and a fourth line that isn’t cringe inducing. I’m not a big fan of the Penguins defensive corps, either. I’ve loved Paul Martin since he was a Gopher but he can’t stay healthy. And before you sign Matt Niskanen to a big contract, remember that he’s a St. Cloud State Husky. They never win anything.

In the Clapper case, a group of plaintiffs challenged the constitutionality of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008. It permits the N.S.A. to intercept Americansâ international emails and phone calls on the domestic network and without a warrant as long as the target of the surveillance is a noncitizen located abroad.
The Obama administration argued that the plaintiffs lacked standing because they could not prove their communications had been intercepted. The justices voted 5 to 4 to dismiss the case.
Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. recited two claims made by the government: The Justice Department must notify criminal defendants who faced evidence derived from such surveillance, and the N.S.A., to intercept the Americansâ communications without a warrant, must target their foreign contacts for surveillance. But both claims have come under scrutiny in the recent focus on N.S.A. activities.
It emerged that the Justice Department was not notifying defendants in situations when warrantless surveillance had led in turn to a wiretap order on an individual that produced evidence used in court.

I don’t know the Hindu rituals/temple culture at all, but would it be useful for you to talk to her family priest?
My Nana was the Irish Catholic version of your MiL — she had three daughters (whose first failure to her was, as she saw it, not being sons). The first two each married the first man they dated, and the youngest ran away & joined the Marines (age 17, in the early 1950s). But the happiest & most productive I ever saw Nana was when she was in charge of the Ladies’ Sodality at her church, where she got to boss everyone around. She did work very hard at organizing, bookkeeping, making sure every church festival ran efficiently and that every parish emergency in the congregation [sick kids, dead spouses, house fires] was swiftly met with babysitting rosters, funeral arrangements, temporary housing & clothing donations.
If her family priest is approachable, surely there must be local equivalents where she can use all the talents she’s wasting on collecting grievances? Parenting classes for teenagers, perhaps, or setting up child care arrangements so busy young couples don’t have an excuse to scant their religious duties?

@schrodinger’s cat: Oh dear. Well, at least you (and your husband!) have the consolation of living on the other side of the world, so you can at least count down the hours until your escape…
Would it be worth talking to the family priest, and asking if there wasn’t a local charity that could use her vast organizational talents so that such a pious lady’s devotion wouldn’t be wasted?

@SatanicPanic: You could call him a Commie. It all sounds Lamarckian to me.

I assume your MIL knows about your religious beliefs. If she understands this is a one shot deal, going along with it may not lead to a slippery slope. Also, the ceremony is scheduled, so whether your participate or not the thing is on.
Your MIL, I assume, understands this will not change your religious beliefs, therefore the issue is if you do it this one time, will she agree to not push her beliefs after this ceremony is over.
@schrodinger’s cat:
As the shradam ceremony is an annual thing, she has a point from her point of view about your husband needing to do it in year two, even though going to India to do it is a stretch, since he could do it at the local temple.
@schrodinger’s cat:
Have a cousin, who got divorced. Wife went along with the marriage and then said she already has a boyfriend and wants out.
If you think the divorces in the U.S. are litigious, India is worse by orders of magnitude. Took about 5 years to have the marriage annulled.
From what I’ve seen, with the few cases of divorce in India, I can see putting of a formal divorce from a purely logistical stand point to avoid the legal aggravation.

Three O6 in the final four. The league office must be happy about that (O6 = ratings).
So naturally that means Anaheim is going to win the Cup….

@SatanicPanic: is it just me, or does that sound like Christians taking credit for the presence of any Smart Jew.
Y’all never would have had your Einstein if my people hadn’t kept persecuting his ancestors.

@gene108: The ceremony is to be performed by me and MIL is still waiting for my yes to schedule it.
I know it is, but most people even in her family make it a humongous religious deal only for the first year.
SIL marriage has been on the rocks since 2008 and both MIL and SIL go on pretending like the estranged husband is going to come back. They are deluded on this score.

I know that you do observe a remembrance every year, but most people, and even those in her family make it a humongous religious deal only for the first year.

@JenJen: I’ve been playing hockey since 1967, but thanks for your concern about my awareness of the game. You don’t seem to read what I wrote with your repeated references to “bouncing pucks”. It is the strange and unpredictable ricochet off a stanchion, putting the puck directly in front of the goal in OT, that made this a crap ending. Duh.

If her son thinks it’s up to you, then don’t do it. Bad things happen all the time, just like good things. If she can’t assign credit for good things to you already, she never will.
This looks like a lose lose event to me. I decided early on that my MIL was crazy, and never gave her a chance to get me into her world. She never let her kids call her Mom, it showed a total lack of respect… how crazy is that?
Your MIL is crazy, don’t help her in that role.
