Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Consistently wrong since 2002

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

It was just too damned nice to think about politics or blog today. Seventy to 80 with blue skies, a breeze, and no humidity. I seriously wish it was like this year round.

Good game so far between Rangers and Kings, and between Charlotte and Denver (pro lax).

Hanging out at the drive in (with its new digital projector) to watch Edge of Tomorrow. I have gotten to the point that I prefer drive-ins over regular theaters.

Gorgeous day here in NYC – mid-80s with virtually no humidity. A little warm for my liking, but it beats the standard humidity-ridden summer days at this temperature.

Getting a late workout in after stuffing my face with BBQ at the festival at Madison Square Park and getting my wedding suit measurements taken this morning. Less than 100 days until the big day, and so many fun little details to figure out between now and then.

John, If you are a weather wimp, move to SoCal. When I lived there, bad weather was rain on Saturday messing up your weekend. Now, I think they are doing rain dances in the whole state.

I am a weather wimp too. I have sweat barrels since I moved to the Ozarks. Humidity is a bitch here—not to mention chiggers and ticks!

Well, I’m not going to DC. Suffice it to say sometimes family can sure kill a good time.

It became obvious early last week, that I was more interested in taking this trip in July than my family was.

Oh well, I’ve got to resign myself to the fact that if I want to travel, I’ll just have to become comfortable travelling and doing things by myself.

I’m basically an introverted person, but I really don’t like to go out for a movie or to eat alone. I’m basically too used to big family things.

I sent an email to my Senator and Congressional Rep to cancel my White House tour request.

    Le sigh…

Had sports jeopardy audition today. Did a 30 question test to whittle down 300 to 25 and made it through. 2nd section was a mock game and interview. Now have to wait to see if I get cast over the next year.
It was fun. Did it in the wheel of fortune studio and I got busted messing with the wheel.

LA scored to pull within one, then the Rangers got that back in…11 seconds?

I remember when opposite sides scoring goals 20 seconds apart seemed fast.

I had mentioned on here a few weeks back about one of my good friends (and one of my groomsmen) being in a severe funk (likely serious depression). I’ve been chatting with his brother, and it appears that they finally convinced him (somehow) to go see a therapist. That said, I still haven’t spoken to him directly in 3 weeks now, and frankly with my wedding coming up in about 3 months, I have to make a decision about whether to drop him or not. What do y’all think is the right move / if I should let him go, the right way to go about giving him the news gently?

I also haven’t sent his wedding invitation yet (the only person I haven’t mailed) because I don’t have any honest idea about what condition he is in. If he is still drinking regularly, uncouth, and generally a loose cannon, I’m not sure I even want him to attend.

Denver has won 19 straight regular-season games, but Charlotte has a one-goal lead early in the fourth quarter. Shot clock and two-point line mean this one is far from over.

Playing goal in lax is a fool’s errand at any level, but in the pros, where everybody can shoot it 100 mph? You gotta be nutz.

Just checked in on the ISEE-3 Reboot:

06/05/14: We have received authorization from NASA to communicate with (and command) ISEE-3 until 25 June. Meanwhile, analysis of telemetry from ISEE- 3 shows that *ALL* of its science instruments are still powered on. Telemetry also shows that ISEE-3 has a power margin of +28 watts – after 36 years. It is important to note that ISEE-3 has not had a functioning battery for decades. Indeed, this power capacity is what was projected for the spacecraft to have had in 1982 after 4 years in space.
    …

I was on the launch team at GSFC way back then, so it’s really cool to see this thing come off.

Sorry for going political, but damnit this pisses me off.

So no surprise, but this is what the Faux News Fuckers and the other media assholes have aided and abetted…FBI: Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s parents have received threats

…All the while, a fallen soldier’s mother and a former member of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s unit pressed assertions Saturday that troops were killed while searching for him in Afghanistan. Officials say that there is no such evidence.
“Yes, men were injured and killed in the search for him,” former Sgt. Matt Vierkant, a member of Bergdahl’s platoon, told CNN. “The mission was to find Bergdahl.”
Pentagon and Army officials have looked at such claims, and “right now there is no evidence to back that up,” a U.S. official told CNN on Thursday…

Family! You really need to find a friend or two who likes to travel, or at least a friend in the area you want to visit who can show you around.

    @PsiFighter37:

Uninviting your friend entirely will probably break the friendship permanently. As someone else suggested, I would talk to his brother or parents first. You might be able to get away with telling him that you don’t want to put the financial burden of being a groomsman on him, but completely withdrawing the invitation will mean breaking off the friendship entirely.

The Triple Crown drought continues and California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn doesn’t think it will end any time soon because of “cowards.”

Moments after California Chrome finished tied for fourth place at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, Coburn delivered a harsh rebuke to Belmont winner Tonalist as well as the entire world of horse racing. Coburn fumed over the fact that rested horses who did not participate in all legs of the Triple Crown are permitted to compete against those who have made the grueling trek from Churchill Downs to Pimlico and finally on to Belmont Park.

The Texas Republican party platform for 2016 looks like a winner:

We revere the sanctity of human life and therefore oppose genocide, euthanasia, and assisted suicide. (..)

Properly applied capital punishment is legitimate, is an effective deterrent, and should be swift and unencumbered.

Texas Republicans venerate human life, so kill ’em all slow and let ’em die screaming.

And of course it’s not enough to kill the adults — gotta kill the kids too:

All adult citizens should have the legal right to conscientiously choose which vaccines are administered to themselves, or their minor children, without penalty for refusing a vaccine. We oppose any effort by any authority to mandate such vaccines or any medical database that would contain personal records of citizens without their consent.

Shorter Texas 2016 Republican platform: Die, die, die, everybody die! Kill you all, make you suffer!

Not just the kids ‘n the adults, but the entire human race:

While we all strive to be good stewards of the earth, “climate change” is a political agenda which attempts to control every aspect of our lives. We urge government at all levels to ignore any plea for money to fund global climate change or “climate justice” initiatives.

Absolutely perfect. The perfect storm of evil + insanity. Everything we’ve come to expect from the great state of Texas.
