Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Consistently wrong since 2002

I was promised a recession.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Second rate reporter says what?

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Okay, I don’t know soccer, but I do know dog breeds. Some of these choices are perfect, and some are not, and some are — inexplicable, at least to me. Here’s the ones I can identify, top to bottom, left to right:

USA – Boston Terrier American Pit Bull Terrier American Staffordshire Terrier
Mexico – Chihuahua
Japan – Shiba Inu Akita Inu
Netherlands – Kooikerhondje
England – English Bulldog
Germany – German Shepherd (“Alsatian”)
Croatia – Dalmatian
Italy – Italian Greyhound Spain – Galago Espanol
Brazil – Fila Brasileiro
France – French Bulldog (should be a Griffon)
Switzerland – Berger Blanc Suisse
Belgium – Belgian Shepherd
Australia – Australian Kelpie
Spain – Presa Canario Italy – Cane Corso
Argentina – Dogo Argentino

Anybody want to update or correct me here?

@MomSense: I thought Sennenhund for Switzerland. (They’re much better known in Europe; I’ve known the breed’s supporters to insist that St. Bernards are just derivative Sennenhunds.)

@Anne Laurie: Took me a second on the second row left in the orange jersey, but that’s a Kooikerhondje from Holland. Neat little dogs, big in Dutch history, not common in the US.

    Dude is pissed!

The Triple Crown drought continues and California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn doesn’t think it will end any time soon because of “cowards.”

Moments after California Chrome finished tied for fourth place at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, Coburn delivered a harsh rebuke to Belmont winner Tonalist as well as the entire world of horse racing. Coburn fumed over the fact that rested horses who did not participate in all legs of the Triple Crown are permitted to compete against those who have made the grueling trek from Churchill Downs to Pimlico and finally on to Belmont Park.

    June 7, 2014 at 10:29 pm

@efgoldman: Why? IMO, what makes the Triple Crown such an incredible achievement is that the winner has beat the best horses suited for the Derby, the best ones ready for the Preakness and the best ones at the time of the Belmont. Defeating all comers is what makes it so great and that would be greatly diminished if the Belmont was limited to horses that the Derby/Preakness winner had alrady defeated. (And of course the next step would be to complain about horses resting after the Derby, bypassing the Preakness and then ruining a Triple Crown opportunity in the Belmont)

Prince is that rare artist, that has more than one album that is really good, but Purple Rain is still my fav, hit, after hit, after hit.

And yet, Prince’s “hits” album is easily about 4 disc long. Cause even his non-“pop” hits are still aweseome, like “Soft and Wet” and “If I Was Your Girlfriend” or “Pop Life”.

And if you listen to “Raspberry Beret” and not have an earworm for the rest of the day, then I don’t know wha’t wrong with you…lol.

Prince has a way of writing an original song and you actually think it’s a cover, but nope he wrote it, like “Kiss” for example. You hear it and you think, I’ve heard that song before…nope he wrote it and NO one ever recorded it before.

France should be a poodle, or a Dogue De Bordeaux.

Switzerland should be a Greater Swiss mountain dog. (Yes, Berners are great, but come on, they have the word ‘Swiss’ right in their name.)

Australia should be Australian shepherd, or maybe Australian cattle dog. Or, let’s face it, dingo. Because how could you not?

US shouldn’t be a golden retriever, they certainly weren’t bred here. Coonhound would be fine, I guess, but a pit is also a fine choice. Personally I’d be partial to the Carolina dog, or maybe the Catahoula, but it’s not like anyone would have the faintest clue what they were.

To phrase it as politely as possible, the APBT breed is still undergoing a process of standardization.

Or as its detractors say, when a dog can ‘legally’ be anything from 30 to 95 pounds, that’s not a breed — that’s a crap shoot. Much like us human Americans… jumped-up mutts!

@Adam Lang: In Switzerland, the dogs we call Greater Swiss and Berners are just different sizes of Sennhund (and running around in the Brazilian heat, I’d go for the smaller dog myself).

What we call ‘Australian Shepherds’ were actually bred in the American West. They probably have some Australian Kelpie in their bloodlines, though. And the Kelpies almost certainly have some Dingo blood, although the Australians don’t want to talk about that. (Owning ‘an animal with Dingo blood’ is technically illegal in the sheep-raising states, and local authorities are authorized to shoot any dog identified as such. So, just as American shelters have an excess of ‘boxer crosses’ and ‘part great danes’ that look suspiciously like pit bulls, Australian kelpie & cattle dog breeders are a lot more circumspect than their American equivalents.)

You’re right about the Catahoula, though — they’d be great on the field, and those mad blue eyes would definitely intimidate the oppostion :)

Lovely day (boo on the loss, but it looks like California Chrome got kicked by another horse leaving the gate- he has a gash in his foot that I’m sure was no fun to run on), until it was time to leave, which was a clusterfuck of monumental proportions on the part of NYRA and the LIRR. Each of whom, of course, is now blaming the other. Or, at least, NYRA is blaming the LIRR, which is typical of NYRA (their slogan should be, “not our fault!”) What a mess. Thirty minutes to get out there, three hours to get back.

As for the dogs, the APBT is an appropriate choice for USA- it’s was used in a WWI era piece, so it’s got a history of being the US’s breed rep:

@lamh36: @Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name): Just found this bit where Neal Brennan is describing meeting Prince with Dave Chappelle and ?uestlove a couple weeks after that skit ran. Prince had seen it after Morris Day called and told him to watch. As Prince is asking if anyone wants something as he orders room service, he says ” Dave, pancakes?”

@KG: It isn’t a tournament. No one is obligated to enter his/her/their horse in any event. If one the thinks one has has a potential Belmont winner, one enters it. Otherwise one doesn’t.

@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name): I was just drawing a comparison, and one that basically made the same point you did. Just like the grand slam events are separate events, the triple crown races are separate events, they’re only considered part of something bigger because we decided they were a long time ago

Here is The Time with “The Walk.”

Lamh36, like? As a 19-20 guy, this was awesome. My friends and I had Morris and Jerome’s lines down.

ETA: This was a short version; I haven’t upload my vinyl.

Shit, I’ve got to work tomorrow but damn VH1 Soul is just on “Most Beautiful Girl In The World” era of Prince songs. There is still Prince – NPG to gto…damnit.

ETA: And Prince is ONLY 56!!!! You forget he started when he was like 17!!!! Jeez. He’s still got some years of possible great music making ahead of him

ETA: Some of us don’t forget how young he was when he started. Mock the Upper Midwest as you will, but some cool shit has come out of our area. And, yeah, we ain’t no NOLA, but we aren’t a wasteland either.

@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name): Awesome! Saw him in Vegas at an after-set during NBA All Star weekend. Didn’t even know where I was going. A friend’s boss gathered us after the main party we were at and said “come on, we’re going to see a little purple man”. Like your gig, it started at 4am. I was pretty inebriated and didn’t even pay the obvious riddle no mind. It was Vegas and I knew I’d be out all night. When we got to the hotel and I realized what was going down, I sobered up enough to soak it all in. He was about 50 feet from us. Other musicians were in town for the festivities so Wil.I.am, Queen Latifah and others jammed with him. It was an amazing surprise and performance.

I was going to watch the end of the Nats game and go to bed early (for me). So the Padres just tied it up with a homer in the bottom of the ninth. D’oh!

Screw it, I’m going to bed anyway.

    Adam Lang

@Anne Laurie: Well, if you go back far enough (120 years) they weren’t distinct breeds. But that’s true of all dogs if you go back fr enough, sooner or later, so I’m not sure that is a terribly useful distinction.

Since the very early 20th century the Grosser Schweizer (Greater Swiss) Sennenhund and the Berner (Bernese) Sennenhund have been distinct breeds. Their fur is quite different from one another: the Greater Swiss is much more similar to the Appenzeller and the Entlebucher. And these breeds were first recognized in Europe, and the Swiss have been registering the dogs in different breeds since well before they were recognized in the US at all. So if you ask the Swiss, then they are definitely different breeds, and have been for quite a long time.

I’d link you to some comparative pictures (I’ve got pictures of all of them on my blog) but IIRC having more than one link in your comment always ends badly, with it sitting in purgatory forever.

You can have three hyperlinks in a comment— but the “reply to” link counts as one of them. So you could have put in two dog pics.

I suspect they weren’t necessarily going for the most obvious association between country and dog breed here. Still, I don’t know where they found the dogs they did use. Them shoulders look suspiciously broad …

I wonder how you managed to confuse Spain and Italy. It says ITALIA right there at the top of the Italian FA badge on the shirt. Another thing of interest about the badges on those World Cup team shirts — see the stars above some of them? One for each World Cup that nation has won. Germany has three champions’ stars, Brazil five, England’s one and only (from 1966) remains a national tragedy in The Birthplace of The Sport.

OK, now this is a Dogo Argentino in a soccer uniform. I have no idea what breed the other photo is. The original source for all this montage also has Portugal (Portuguese Water Dog) and Russia (Siberian Husky).

France should be represented by a Yorkie. It’s the most common breed by far there, and perfectly typical of the national psyche.
