Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Consistently wrong since 2002

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Books are my comfort food!

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Silly Song of Summer, courtesy of a commentor who probably prefers not to be named. Ah, the risibility of teenage boys, and their inappropriate arousal at the the most ridiculous moments, in response to middle-aged checkout clerks or pandering advertising billboards…

Let’s just say I had a thousand bucks to contribute to political campaigns. I might, but I’d have to be convinced. To whom should I contribute, and how would I distribute it. Allison Grimes?

    @fleeting expletive:

I’ll put in another plug for State Senator Nina Turner, who is running for Secretary of State in Ohio.

Grimes needs to be convincing that she’s actually fighting.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but even Landrieu is fighting harder.

How about the North Dakota dude?

@fleeting expletive: I’d want to see a post-primary poll before I contributed to that race, but it’d be high on my list. Brasley in Iowa would also be high on my list.

I spent all day shooting at a Ren Faire. And I lost my phone, which means I have no contact with anyone until I spring for another phone. And my dim mother got a call from someone asking if she knew anyone who was missing their phone and she only considered herself, her husband and her boys. Jesus. I get real tired of being invisible, but DAMN, you could have thought just a little bit, mom. Annoying. I may have to smash something. But a good time was had by all. Except for musicians.

Random fact, fairly considerable overlap between adult Ren Fair types and the BDSM crowd.

    Always classy:

The father of Bowe Bergdahl, the Idaho soldier released from captivity in a controversial prisoner swap with the Taliban, has received emailed death threats that authorities are investigating, an Idaho police chief said on Saturday….
…The threats came as Hailey, a tourist community of some 8,000 people in the mountains of central Idaho, was buffeted by hundreds of vitriolic phone calls and emails.

This is no longer my country.

Dude, this has always been America’s Way.

The only thing that shocks me is that folks have been shocked by the GOP.

Their ‘ patriotism’ was always nothing but rhetorical bullshyt.

Not remotely shocked by what they’ve done to the Bergdahl’s.

    Good morning.

DC area Balloon Juicers: Mark your calendar for a meetup this Wednesday night, June 11, in Alexandria, VA, probably near the King Street Metro station (or Old Town). Place TBC (or we could do a pub walk …)

Dee Loralei and her son will be visiting for 2 days; she’d love your suggestions too on what attractions they (and her father) should catch.

Anne Laurie will put up a meetup thread later.

Does anyone here remember a 1993 movie about homeless people in New York, The Saint of Fort Washington, starring Danny Glover and Matt Dillon? I saw it on the telly years ago and found it very moving, but have never heard much about it. Its IMDB entry consists of just one plot summary — no cast list or credits — and if you order it on Amazon, Warner Bros. has to burn it onto a DVD-R just for you. Ebert had kind things to say about it, though.

Yes, I saw that movie. My recollection is that it came and went fairly quickly. Americans are a bit squeamish about confronting the issue of homelessness.

TV Guide‘s review was somewhat less than kind.

    @Bob In Portland:
And of course the Ukrainian military are shelling Ukrainian civilians out of pure wickedness, because they’re just that way, and because there are absofreakinglutely no Russian or Russian-backed forces anywhere in “the” Ukraine, n’est-ce pas?

  27. 27.

    Bob In Portland

    June 8, 2014 at 3:07 pm

@Amir Khalid: Didn’t say that. Can you only discuss things by pretending to speak for me? Rather poor skills, don’t you think?

I’m saying the US backed this coup, created a regime that is antithetical to ethnic Russians and is continuing to kill civilians.

What do you expect the outcome will be? The troublemakers will be eliminated and everyone will start taking Ukrainian language classes? If you want peace you sit down and talk.

    @Bob In Portland:

I’m saying the US backed this coup

On what evidence, really? And why is Russia so threatened by political developments in a nation so much smaller and militarily weaker than itself that it must meddle in that other nation’s affairs?

  29. 29.

    Bob In Portland

    June 8, 2014 at 4:07 pm

@Amir Khalid: Really? You won’t even admit that the US backed this coup? Really? The US has a seventy-year history with Ukrainian fascists. You think that they cut off the relationship with them last November?

How about Syria? Do you deny that the US has its hands in that one? How about El Salvador? Did some of those death squad officers get their training at the School of the Americas?

You know, I find it curious that all these allegedly clever liberal/progressives here can’t seem to get their head around American post-WWII foreign policy. Well, if Obama says that he’s for peace in Ukraine then the billion bucks in aid must be for peace.

Let me know when you notice what our foreign policy has been all of your life.
