Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Didn’t see this coming: Eric Cantor is losing 56-44 in his primary tonight with 75% of precincts in.

Unless there's a Chicago style vote dump (or a screw up by the vote counters), Cantor is… well… done.

— Harry Enten (@ForecasterEnten) June 10, 2014

Update. Still 56-44 with 86% in. Looks like he’s done.

    A poll conducted late last month for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) shows him with a wide lead over challenger David Brat heading toward next Tuesday’s Republican primary election.

    The poll, shared with Post Politics, shows Cantor with a 62 percent to 28 percent lead over Brat, an economics professor running to Cantor’s right. Eleven percent say they are undecided.

    The internal survey of 400 likely Republican primary voters was conducted May 27 and 28 by John McLaughlin of McLaughlin & Associates. It carries a margin of error of +/-4.9 percentage points.

Even though it doesn’t sound as if that’s the case with your mother, you might be able to convince her that this would be better than the regular toilet. (True for you, and maybe a white lie for her–it could become out of order.) Cheaper than a plumber call over time, I’m guessing. Another possibility is direct supervision in the bathroom. That’s a trickier issue, of course, but it might eventually become necessary. (It might help if it were treated as a medical issue, if you could swing that.) My last thought is that you might visit care.com, a set of online communities for caregivers; they’re nice people and may have better ideas.

If you overestimate how likely casual voters are to vote or underestimate the importance of crossover voters in an open primary, you’ll get epically wrong answers.

    Canada-born U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has made good on a promise to renounce his birth country’s citizenship — doing so amid speculation he could make a run at the White House in 2016.

    Spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said Cruz’s action became official May 14 and that Texas’ junior senator received written confirmation at his home in Houston on Tuesday. She said the tea-party-backed Republican “is pleased to have the process finalized.”

    Lisa Murkowski won as a write-in in Alaska after she lost the primary basically because she took the primary for granted and didn’t pay attention. or actually campaign. The Republican primary in Alaska is closed – you have to be registered R to vote in it – but more than 50% of voters in Alaska are unaffiliated. I disagree with Lisa but she is good at making personal connections with people (which is not my impression of Cantor) and that is important in a small population state. For the write-in campaign she pulled out all the stops including a campaign to get people to spell her name right!

    During his appearances, Fox labeled Dickinson as “(D-VA), Running For Congress.”

    Just one problem with that: He’s not. At least not as a Democrat.

    On Thursday morning, the Virginia 7th Congressional District Democratic Committee announced that it would cancel this year’s nominating convention, because no one had filed to run against incumbent Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

    The filing deadline — Thursday, April 10th, at 5:00 p.m. — passed by without any forms submitted by Dickinson. The committee’s chair tells Mediaite that he notified the party at “last minute” that he was not going to file.

    None of that was disclosed by Dickinson when he appeared on Fox News last night. (UPDATE: The committee chairwoman provided us with emails that show her requesting that Dickinson “let the show know that [he is] not a Democratic candidate.”)

    He knows that Washington’s uncertainty and gridlock coming has crippled the ability of our job creators to expand and plan for the future.

    Mike Dickinson is an “unapologetic liberal”, but he uses the Republican framing of “job creators” on his home page. And, apparently, he had some difference with the local Democratic committee, which is why he didn’t bother to file (I don’t really understand that logic, but there you are). I’m not sure this guy can swing this district. As others have said, THIS is why Howard Dean and his true commitment to a 50-state strategy was one of the main architects of the 2006 Democratic wave. While everyone was saying it was hopeless and he was bankrupting the party, he laid the groundwork to take maximal advantage of a change in the wind. How quickly the Democratic establishment went right back to forgetting that lesson.

Can’t be too shy to teach this subject in VA*.

    Few people appreciate the extent to which the American slave economy fueled national industrialization and an encompassing continental economic growth. After the ban on the international slave trade in 1808, the North American slave trade gravitated and eventually centered along Wall Street in Richmond, Virginia. The capitalized value of slave labor became as important as the dollar itself, a commodity to be loaned, bought and sold, speculated on, and eventually even serving as a means of financing a fratricidal Civil War. Learn more about this trade, and in the process, challenge some of the sacred myths that still persist about the history of slavery in America.

    *Many non-Virginians also like to avoid learning any truths about slavery, but Virginia was (arguably) the epicenter.

    Trammell isn’t mentioned anywhere. No talk of “flipping the district”. Just “sign a farewell card” (and send us money). Why should anyone donate to these idiots? WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO PAY FOR??? Morons.

    I think President Obama is the best President in my lifetime (an unfortunately low bar), and I never went starry-eyed for the guy (although I always liked him), but my biggest disappointment has been how little he has chipped away at the stranglehold of our awful elite establishment, both in DC and in the Party as a whole. I never expected him to revolutionize things, but I had hoped for a bit more rebalancing. Unlike other things, he has pretty much complete control over who runs the DNC; he should have left Howard Dean in charge, or one of his proteges. 2010 may have turned out quite differently if he had.

    Why, oh why, did I not stock up on popcorn tonight?

    RICHMOND — As if the political drama were not powerful enough, chaos erupted at the election night headquarters shortly after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor conceded his stunning defeat to tea party backed conservative David Brat.

    Cantor addressed his supporters for about four minutes at a suburban Richmond hotel ballroom, then boarded SUV without taking questions from supporters scurrying after him.

    Then it got really rambunctious. In the room of downcast Cantor supporters, a new energy suddenly erupted — but not the kind they wanted election night. A group of immigration activists stormed the ballroom, screaming and waving a flag. “What do we want? Immigration reform! When do we want it? Now!”

    A few Cantor supporters tried to block their entrance into the ballroom, and pushing and shoving ensued. And before they reached the microphone, one Cantor supporter threw his glass of wine onto a female protestor. She swore at him in return.

    @Pogonip:
    Talked to sis & she strong suggested you see what the county can do for you, some of them do a good job. She said it might take a professional evaluation to see if they can understand why she is doing this. Other than that she didn’t know much about what you can do.

    She did say that you might want to get a ‘cap’ which is sort of like commod that hangs inside the toilet. The down side is someone will have to dump it after it gets used but it would save the plumbing.

    Good luck.

    @shelley: because it gives the Dems a chance to pick up the seat, because this rando isn’t going to be the #2 in the GOP Congress, and because the votes all end up the same anyway (Rs vote for R priorities). And it helps the Village realize the GOP base is crazytown.

    @Violet:

    Could he pull a Lisa Murkowski and run as an Independent?

    Not in Virginia.

    @efgoldman:

    She doesn’t know Cassius’ Iago’s Cantor’s district well enough to know if this is a possible Dem takeover.

    Extremely unlikely.
