Per commentor and party-planner Redshift:
The DC-Area Meetup was a success, and a good time was had by all! It was great meeting all of you, and I look forward to our next get-together.
Pictured: Seabe, Redshift, ET, Mumphrey, DeeLorelei, Mumphrey’s wife, and Sharl. (Elizabelle arrived a bit later.)

Commentor Uncle Cosmo, at the end of the last meet-up thread:
So can we get a roll call on who’s up for Busboys & Poets Thursday night? I could MARC down for an early evening meetup (last train northbound is at 10:30 PM) but would be highly torqued to make the trek & end up drinking alone…
If you’re up for tonight, leave a message below.
dedc79
Re Busboys and Poets, you might want to specify which one. There are two in DC and another two in the burbs.
raven
When you embiggen the photo it is upsidedown!
NotMax
Haven’t had that much to drink – the pic is actually upside-down.
Tommy
That is a handsome looking group of people. I am jealous. Former, long time DC resident and I miss the darn place. Heck I almost wonder if there are enough folks in the St. Louis area that would like to get together. Anybody?
Belafon
So, when you all meet up for one of these (I would still like to do one for the Dallas area), is it like being in Zombieland and you only use your Balloon Juice names?
PurpleGirl
@Tommy: That’s the first step — asking if anyone is out there in the area. Hope you get a meet-up going because they are fun.
PurpleGirl
@Belafon: At NYC meet-ups I’ve used my real name.
TooManyJens
I’d love to have a meetup at Netroots Nation if anyone else is going.
low-tech cyclist
Had to miss this get-together because my wife is out of town, so I’m Mr. Mom this week. But I’ll have to keep an eye out for the next one!
Tommy
@PurpleGirl: There are two active posters here that are in my neck of the woods, but it would be a few hours drive to get to me. I am willing to bet there are more, maybe lurkers, right around me.
Mnemosyne
@Belafon:
At our last LA meetup, someone (Mary G?) brought labels that had a line across the middle and we wrote our nyms on top and our names on the bottom.
JPL
How fun!
satby
I’m so ready for any meetup withing 60 miles of me, because being surrounded by the crazy all the time is draining. And I’ve got my own stalker trolls on FB now, very tedious. Wish Cleek’s pie filter worked for that!
PurpleGirl
@Tommy: Well then, instead of doing one on a weekend evening, plan for a Saturday or Sunday late afternoon. Research some restaurants or bar&grills that are open on Sunday and give them as possible places to meet. See if anyone responds. I’m sure Anne Laurie would post the information.
Mary G
@Mnemosyne: Can’t take credit for the labels, was it Ruckus, Ruemara or Roger Moore?
lol
@dedc79:
I’m guessing the 14th and V location. Never knew there was one at 5th and K.
PurpleGirl
It is time for a NYC meet-up. Who’s up for one? In July?
Tommy
@satby: LOL. About 90% of my interaction with folks on a daily basis, well not liberals. Not totally crazy folks generally speaking, otherwise I’d go crazy myself. But not liberals either. One of the main reasons I am here. It is just nice to talk to other folks that think the way you do.
Roger Moore
@Mary G:
Tweren’t me.
Manyakitty
I still want a meetup in the Akron/Cleveland area!
Villago Delenda Est
So was Eric Cantor there to cry in his Long Island Iced Tea?
Belafon
@Roger Moore: So, it was a Stand Alone Complex?
raven
@JPL: You can breathe easy, Price ain’t going for the post.
raven
I fixed the picture.
NotMax
@raven
Now the ketchup bottle is upside-down.
:)
No food on the table, not even snackage*. Interesting.
*hat tip to Ron Stoppable
Shakezula
Crap, is the B&P meetup tonight?
While I’m thinking of it – Has anyone ever attended one of the D.C. library’s Books & Bars events? I keep missing them, but I finally have the book for the next one.
scav
@raven: & @NotMax: Look at the text. This photo and crowd had quite the night.
JPL
@raven: He wants to chair the budget committee.
Gin & Tonic
@raven: I think one more rotation might be necessary.
seabe
Lol I’m the only young’n. Thanks for organizing!
raven
duh
raven
@Gin & Tonic: Better?
Roger Moore
@Belafon:
Somebody brought physical nametags; we just can’t remember who.
scav
@raven: Not a rotation, a flip.
Roger Moore
@raven:
Except that it’s a mirror image; the writing is all backward.

3 cheers to Redshift for picking Murphy’s in Alexandria and organizing this — it turned out to be a great location.
1) accessible by Metro (King Street Station), and free Old Town Trolley will bring you to Murphys (aka Mumphreys). Balloon Juicers can return you to the Metro, in event Trolley has retired for the evening.
2) Parking situation is good, especially on South Columbus Street (roughly, behind the Ross store). Paid parking only through 7:00 p; after that it’s free.
3) although: last night was rainy, so maybe less competition for parking anyhoo.
4) Old Town looks beautiful at night with white lights encircling the tree trunks. Very photogenic last night, with the wet pavement and neon too. And more pubs and restaurants abound.
5) Upstairs of Murphy’s was quiet enough to talk, good selection of brews (Tim F and DougJ might disagree), and they make a good charbroiled burger with not so great cottage fries. ($7.00)
But enough about logistics:
The group last night was wonderful! Thanks to Dee Loralei for inspiring the get-together! She is lively!
Enjoyed meeting ET and seabe and Sharl, and seeing Mr. and Mrs. Redshift again (science rocks); bummed I arrived too late to see Mr. and Mrs. Mumphrey.
DCists: should we try to do a few of these a year, with more notice? Or when another farflung Juicer sidles into town?
You want to do another over the summer?
Sadly, we cannot guarantee a high-ranking Republican’s career will go belly-up every time we schedule one. But we can hope…
NotMax
@Roger Moore
Flipped redux.
Elizabelle
Sharl’s in grey, Seabe’s in plaid. You can figure from there.
satby
@Tommy: indeed
raven
@Roger Moore: Damn. I’ll take it off of the bill.
scav
@raven: What did my grandfather say? “I’ll do the job for five dollars. Ten if you watch and twenty if you contribute.” This muti-step fashion was far more amusing and locally characteristic.
NotMax
@scav
Chico: Now, for-a rehearsing, we get-a $500.
Groucho: $500? How much for not rehearsing?
Chico: You couldn’t afford it.

Between the flipped photo and my (apparently) having made incorrect assumptions about the gender and/or age of commenters, I am having trouble putting names to the faces in the photo.
Help! (please)
Elizabelle
Let’s see:
from left (at least, now):
Sharl, in the grey polo shirt
Mrs. Mumphrey, behind him
Dee Loralei, in B&W tank top at end of table
Mr. Mumphrey, in button down shirt
ET, in blue tee shirt
Redshift, in smile and black T with blue graphic
Seabe, the young dude in plaid
Not pictured: Mrs. Redshift, helming the camera, and Elizabelle, not there yet
No pets were in attendance.
DeeLoralei
I had a blast last night! Loved meeting you guys. I’m ip for Busboys and Poets, I promise to be there by 8! Gotta do my daughter lay duty and get my dad fed! Where is this place?
WaterGirl
@Elizabelle: That helps a lot, thank you!! How great to match faces with names, and maybe get to meet a lurker or two, as well.
Please tell me that Mr. Mumphrey is not 12, as he appears in the photo.
DeeLoralei, I tried to figure out what “daughter lay duty” is, and concluded that it was “daughterly duties” hijacked by autocorrect.
ET
@NotMax: I had potato skins so there was some snacking…..
Had fund meeting some of the commentors! But i don’t love having my photo taken but sometimes you just gotta….
Uncle Cosmo
Best laid plans o’ mice & men, Chapter 762: I went to sign on this morning & discovered my Net access was fucked. After several hours trying to fix it myself I gave up & called Verizon help. After another 90 minutes with “Munshi” from Hyderabad (the name means “teacher” in Hindi) we finally dug down to the problem in my PC & got everything working again…
but now there is no way I can get down to a DC meetup tonight. Sheeyit. Sorry, folks. I shoulda known something would screw the plans up…
Elizabelle
@Uncle Cosmo:
Oh, that’s awful. So we shall have to do another pass at Busboy’s or Murphy’s later, with lots of notice.
HAVE FUN, DEE LORALEI and Balloon Juicers. Wish I could meet the Thursday crew too. Drink liberally!
Ruckus
@Mary G:
Wasn’t me.
