Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Petty moves from a petty man.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

When I was faster i was always behind.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Has the losing goalie in a series (assuming the Kings win) ever been the Series MVP? Because Lundqvist is making a case tonight.

Ron Hextall comes to mind. 1987 Flyers lost to the Oilers in 7 games and Hextall was awarded the Conn Smythe.

His post game presser was one sad affair.

“Outplayed by” implies they were there for all the games. Tough to prove that the Rangers were there for Games 3 and 4, and the the third period of one or two more.

And before someone tries to make a point by noting that the Rangers won Game 4: I saw the game. There were some skaters on the ice, but no NHL players there. At least, none wearing blue (except for Henk).

The maternal side of the family almost all roots for Michigan teams, with the exception of a few Red Sox fans. Grandfather was born in Boston in 1900, and his dad and older brothers remembered their Sox winning the first modern WS before they moved to Michigan in 1905. One of my aunts and one of my uncles (of gramps’ sixteen kids) and a few of their kids remain Sox loyalists, while the rest of us pull for the Tigers.

But I see that look on the face of some G.R. suburbanites, too, when I tell them that I am, indeed, a real Rapidian, one of those people who voted (in the majority) to decriminalize teh eebil eebil weed- and that I’m a product of the G.R. Can’t remember if I’ve told this story before, but:

My husband and I both grew up in the Chicago suburbs (Oak Park for him, North Shore for me).

We both came out here to go to USC.

We both went to film school at USC (different departments).

We had at least one class together (large lecture class).

We graduated in the same graduation ceremony.

And we met through an ad on the internet seven years after graduation.

Ok, here’s a story – you guys will think it’s gross, no doubt…but! I saw Led Zeppelin when I was on acid back in the ummmm….70’s? and I kept thinking I was imagining like, bleeding in my seat until the end of the show? and then I got up and saw the seat soaked with blood (no, I hadn’t killed anybody) and I trailed my way out of the stadium and saw/thought I saw/did see blood splots on the floor all the way out…..and in the car after there were no drug stores open to buy the necessary item so I bought a bag of tube socks and used those to, you know, stop the splots.

There ya go! One of my stories! Wanna hear an opium story next?

It’s more of a small town Wisconsin thing, but you’ll here it from time to time in Southwest Michigan. It describes those Chicagoans- or, as Mnemosyne pointed out, Chicago suburbanites- who travel to these small towns, find their shops, bars and supper clubs charming, then buy those businesses and watch the charm run out.

In case you thought you were on to the scent I think you think you are on, you are barking up the wrong tree.

One doubts Tommy is around tonight, whomever might be running the sock. (To be clear, not moi.)

My interest lies in the fact that when my dog starts point and growling I become curious and tend to investigate.

Well, if we’re trading menstruation stories, I know that science currently claims that menstrual synchrony doesn’t exist, but it actually happened to me one time — I went on a weekend trip to the Bay Area and met up with my best friend to hang out. I wasn’t due for another week and was quite surprised when Aunt Flo showed up since I’m usually like clockwork. Sure enough, J was on the rag. Very weird.

@Mnemosyne: One of my high school friends was the alpha in sychronizing cycles. No matter who she lived with, their cycle always synched with hers. Happened all through college and law school with various roommates. At some point she figured out they were always synching with her. Hers never changed.

If you go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan there are Yoopers (natives) and trolls (who live “under” the Mackinac Bridge). If you’re around Mackinac Island (or St. Ignace, or Mackinaw City) trolls are also known as fudgies- tourists who are going to the Island, where, inevitably, they will eat some of its famed fudge.

The mother of my child has lived in St. Ignace and in Northampton, MA, and she worked in the food and beverage service sector in both. I think she could write an encyclopedia consisting of every different nickname- naughty, nice and in-between- for tourists that’s used in the USA.

The NY Neo-Con Times is really pounding their war drums. They have 5 stories on the front page of their web site and 3 stories on the front page of the print edition.

    Check out this gem:

American air power could play an important role in reversing the Sunni insurgent offensive in Iraq, current and former American military officials said on Friday, but it would be most effective with improved intelligence about insurgent targets and if the United States were willing to deploy small teams of advisers to call in airstrikes.

Despite skeptics, particularly Democrats, who say that American airstrikes are unlikely to change the course of events in Iraq, President Obama is considering them among a range of options to help the government of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki.

A major question for the Obama administration would be whether to also strike targets in Syria as the group is moving freely across the Syria-Iraq border.

Damn those “Democratic skeptics”. Iraq would be a Jeffersonian paradise but they thwarted Cheney and Kristol.

And of course, they want to use this as excuse to bomb Syria.

The biggest crime is the Times will always be labeled as liberal, when they’re nothing more than warmongering Likudniks.
