Jesus. And I thought the Garbage Pail Kids fad was stupid…
dmsilev
Arguably not as stupid as planking or owling, both of which I think have gone to the great fad graveyard.

I have never heard of The Red Detachment of Women. Weiwei is a genius.

This is what happens when you take away people’s guns. They start shooting things with their feet.

Leave your gams at home, dear. Don’t take your gams to town.

@Baud: The 2nd Amendment guarantees the right to bare arms, but says nothing about bare legs.

@Jerzy Russian: Wikipedia can help:

The article lists the following variations:
Just shoot me. With a leg, of course.

Teens mimicking each other with opaque rituals that have no meaning to outsiders.
I think Socrates got in trouble over something like this.

Is it possible that Ai Weiwei is just kind of a loveable jackass, but China is so stuffy that he really stands out? It cracks me up that he could scratch his balls in public and launch deep debate about free expression and the regime.

I like it.
Ai Weiwei is an important voice in China and it’s good that he’s continuing to push for freedom of expression and the right to criticize.
Here’s a direct link to his Instagram page.
Cheers,
Scott.

Remind me what Instagram is actually useful for?

Pretty sure you can’t walk into a Walmart in China and buy an assault rifle, so this is the alternative.

This will never catch on in the US because our kids can’t lift their fat legs that high.

Oh, a weapon.
Was wondering if Chinese youth had developed a national foot fetish.

Admittedly I am a borderline old but….. I don’t get it.
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
It’s based on something from an artist, so interpretation is always dicey. But since it’s Ai Weiwei that started it, I take it to be a commentary on who has real weapons in China and who has bodies that can be used to fight real weapons. People have more power than they realize.
It’s commentary that can be taken as subversive, but it’s not overtly so, so how can the State stop it? It’s like replacing Chinese tanks with big rubber ducks. If the State cracks down on it, they look ridiculous. “The mighty Communist party is afraid of a rubber duck!!” If they don’t, people realize that there are many who have similar feelings and views that are outside of State control.
That’s my take anyway.
Cheers,
Scott.

I _don’t_ have a foot fetish.
But I _am_ looking for a sole mate.
