Can Colombia get through without Radamel Falcao? Can Greece finally start the campaign with a win?

Yes.
No.
Alex S.
My guess: 1-1, but my record so far has been very spotty (and I will not watch this game very carefully).
Morzer
Columbia 2-1. But then, I thought Spain would win.
Morzer
@humboldtblue:
Can we get a maybe?
humboldtblue
The only mystery in this game if more than one Greek crosses the midfield line
Amir Khalid
Some are expecting Greece to park the bus, but I’d hope they don’t.
humboldtblue
Colombians are so damn talented. And young.
humboldtblue
They can’t park the bus now, they have to open up and Colombia is going to take advantage
humboldtblue
There are four teams from South American with a legitimate shot and Colombia is one of them
? Martin
Statistics don’t count for much once the ball is in play. This one could go either way.
Alex S.
@? Martin:
Yep, that’s why Nate Silver’s attempts to model soccer have always failed. A single game doesn’t offer enough scoring opportunities to make the law of large numbers work.
NotMax
Greece would score 3, but under austerity is limited to 1.
(Know less than nothing about soccer, but couldn’t resist the quip.)
Mr Stagger Lee
@? Martin: Well as the great German Manager, Sepp Herberger once said
Oh BTW I would have loved to listen to some Spanish Sports radio last night.
Mr Stagger Lee
@humboldtblue: I am glad to see Colombia back, after watching that poignant documentary from ESPN, “The Two Escobars”.
shelley
After five straight days of rain, I’m glad to finally see the sun back.
humboldtblue
The Greeks have applied pressure they can’t finish, however
Amir Khalid
@Mr Stagger Lee:
He must be the same Germany manager who said the object of the game was to put the round thing in the rectangular thing.
ronin122
These games sound weird without the vuvuzelas……..(so glad they banned them in Brazil)
Amir Khalid
@humboldtblue:
Let’s hope they manage to put the round thing in the rectangular thing early enough in the second half to make a real game of it.
Steeplejack
The Greeks seem to be really dithering and dawdling over the ball.
humboldtblue
@Amir Khalid: They’ve had some pressure ad good looks but only one dangerous chance
Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name)
@Steeplejack: Maybe they will have a Eureka moment.
Morzer
@NotMax:
And the other two will be taken by Germany!
Morzer
@Amir Khalid:
The Greek bus was repossessed by the Bundesbank, which is why they can’t park it any longer.
Steeplejack
@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name):
Heh, I’d forgotten about that. Nobby Hegel and “Beckenbauer obviously a bit of surprise there” in the lineup.
SRW1
@Amir Khalid:
You are correct, Sir. Source of that pearl is wisdom is selfsame Sepp Herberger.
I can’t believe Gekas is playing for Greece. They still seem a bit short of attacking options.
Onkel Fritze
@Amir Khalid: Nope, that was actually Beckenbauer.
Onkel Fritze
@SRW1: I correct myself. The internet is smarter than me.
raven
Well, I started it on the DVR on Univision but the insights that are brought here make it worth it to go back to real time.
SRW1
@Onkel Fritze:
Der Spegel had a list of football axioms recently, among them the round/rectanguar (in the original: rund/eckig) and they attributed it to Herberger. Beckenbauer is famous for his tactical nous when he was coach of the national team: “Go out and play ball” (Geht’s and spuits Fuassboi)
raven
@SRW1: What’s the axiom for putting your hands behind your neck?
humboldtblue
Colombia’s defense has shown itself to be vulnerable, they may need another goal to keep the Trojans at bay
humboldtblue
@raven: Executioners song
humboldtblue
That should be a red card, this Ibarbo is fantastic
raven
@humboldtblue: They play it an awful lot.
Alex S.
@humboldtblue:
This reference could open Pandora’s box.

All time favorite Monty Python.
I’ve been watching with my boys and all I can say is that I have never seen so much testosterone in a sporting match in all my life.
humboldtblue
@Alex S.: As long as there are no own goals
SRW1
@raven:
‘Haende hoch’, same as in English, except that that it might also include a derogatory slur referring to some ethnic aspect.
humboldtblue
OK, Ham-ezz, I get you’re not James but J-Rod? Oh no.
Amir Khalid
Alas, and also alack-a-day. Greece are two down. And they’re not a high-scoring team, so it’s hard to see them getting two to equalise let alone three to win.
raven
ouch
Steeplejack
Maybe I haven’t been watching this game closely enough, but it seems like both teams are infested with ball hogs. I look up and find myself yelling, “Pass it! Pass it!”

My Iranian friend just posted this:
Lee
Apparently this is the first American referee since 2002
humboldtblue
For those of you feeling “bitey”, Suarez will not start today for Uruguay

The Kenyan Usurper will be giving the Commencement speech at UC Irvine at 11AM. UC Irvine is also in the Collegiate World Series in Omaha, first game starting at 1PM PST.
Busy day in the OC.

The onion is going to have a hard time topping that one
Tommy
@? Martin: Oh how I love the college world series. When I was at LSU in the early 90s I thought the baseball games were the best ticket in town (free for students). Plus at the time they were a powerhouse so they always hosted the super regional.
Alex S.
@D58826:
What will the neocons say? Ally with Iran to fight jihadists or ally with jihadists to fight Iran?
Helen
OT -(cuz I know absolutely nothing about this particular form of Sportsball)
Sadly, No! is back up and running.
Tommy
@D58826: I saw that late last night and assumed more then a few Republicans heads were exploding in anger. Maybe us talking to Iran about their nuclear program wasn’t such a bad idea after all. Look I am not going to come to the defense of the clerics running Iran, but it isn’t a backwards nation. I’d kind of like to have a better relationship with them.
pamelabrown53
@Alex S.: McCain would say: Both.
Onkel Fritze
And it’s a wrap, 3-0 for Colombia. The rest of the day it’s going to be a wild party around here. Although tomorrow are presidential elections, that means ‘ley seca’, so no more alcohol after 6 PM. People just have to get drunk right now.
Calouste
@SRW1:
I think Gary Lineker said something along the lines of:
“Football is a game with 22 players that lasts 90 minutes and then the Germans win.”
Bob In Portland
Rumors that the neo-Nazis will attack the Russian embassy again tonight with firebombs. And that the Ukrainian army will use poison gas on the east tonight.
Botsplainer
With pest control guy. I have snakes(!) in the attic due to mice, and bats in the walls. The mice disappeared with a good bit of bait in other parts of the house several months ago, but he can’t tell if all the snakeskins are recent or not, so we’re doing the expensive mousey treatment for a year.
The bats are requiring some extensive sealing, etc. He’s going to walk the roof and then hand me an estimate that’s going to be jaw dropping.
Joy.
SRW1
@Calouste:
That Lineker quib also made it onto the list of axiomatic statments about football in Der Spiegel. Probably not surprising, considering who get’s to smile most about it.

@Bob In Portland:
Hello, St. Petersburg! Make a screenshot of this one, too!

@Botsplainer: Did you buy the house from the Addams family?
ruemara
@Steeplejack: is it just me, or does that look like a good evening of console gaming?
Steeplejack
@ruemara:
Oh, yeah. I still have nightmares about the original Wolfenstein, although most of them involve running down interminable halls to get anywhere. Damn, that game had some empty real estate! But at the time it was mind-blowing. Though soon to be replaced by Doom in my affections.
Bob In Portland
Have no idea if these things (firebombing the Russian embassy in Kiev, poison gas deployed by the Ukrainian army in the east) will occur, they are rumors and rumors in a war are notoriously unreliable. And if they do happen they won’t be reported in the New York Times.
Remember about a month ago when the steel mill oligarch’s took over Mariupol? That was supposed to be a victory for the Kiev government. What took the Ukrainian army a month to get into town?
There have been reports from the dark, evil side that a unit of the national guard has gone AWOL and returned to the west because they hadn’t been fed or paid. Maybe true, maybe not, but no reporting on it in the Western press, so I guess it doesn’t matter. There is a kerfluffle about Russia supplying tanks to the the rebels. The videos actually showed Ukrainian tanks that aren’t used by the Russians anymore. Yesterday the Russians complained that the Ukrainians crossed the border with several tanks. One apparently broke down and was abandoned there. That would point to a possible false flag op, but who knows? A friend of mine who was over in Ukraine a few years ago said that the borders are unmarked and he inadvertently jogged across the border into Russia on a run, so I imagine that those weapons that the rebels keep “finding” probably wandered over across the border. We can presume that the CIA and NATO are supplying weapons for the Ukrainian army. Heck, if we supplied NATO weapons for our enemies (Iran in the 80s) I would be surprised if we weren’t.
Anyone examine the “peace offer” from Poroshenko? What is he offering the eastern Ukrainians? If you want peace you stop waging war. I think the US would rather see Ukraine divided, because by continuing this war the east has been lost.
So we must all divert our attention. Sporting events are useful. If the fascist coup in Kiev had happened during the NFL season I might not have noticed. Our country needs more coordination with foreign interference and sporting events, although the World Cup is good.
