Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

I’m rooting for Bosnia (and Herzegovina), even though I’ve been informed that, as a Juicer, I hate Muslims.

Well, that was quick. Nothing puts you on the back foot like an own goal in the first 3 minutes.

    @⚽️ Martin:

Would have been too easy for BIH otherwise.

I like Messi. Argentina is probably my least favorite team in international soccer. At least in hockey he’d be given credit for that first goal.

Bosnia are showing quite a bit of skill and nous after going behind. They’re proving to have a strong defensive set up (how many times had Messi been dispossessed?) and when they switch to attack they’ve made Argentina very, very nervous.

Were I a betting man I’d put money on another upset here.

    @Tony J:

I’ve been hearing/reading nothing but positive things about B-H in the run-up to Brazil. That win over Mexico- in Mexico- in the warm-up friendlies was no fluke.

I’m rooting for B-H because Yasmin, the Bosnian waiter in our favorite Italian (Montenegrin-Kosovar) restaurant, will be so ecstatic if they win.

How’s this for a movie screenplay? The host country Brazil loses the Cup because of an egregiously bad call [payoff?]. No foreigner makes it out of the jungle city alive, and Brazil declares its intention to permit the jungle to reclaim it all. The End.

Hm, maybe they thought they didn’t need to do more after they were gifted the lead, but what Argentina delivered in the first 45 minutes was’t that impressive. With a bit of luck B-H could be level.

@Long Tooth: a good opening 15 minutes. In Act II, 50 years have gone by and a good looking biologist and her linguist new husband are leading a team of good looking grad students through the forest, when they accidentally release the rage that is still within the sap of the trees.

Heh. 1978. Argentina-Peru. Argentina wasn’t that good, and Peru wasn’t that bad.

This is setting up nicely for Dzeko, who has a history of coming up big when it matters most, to be the difference-maker. Argentina needs a second in the first 15 minutes after the break or they could be in some fairly deep doo-doo.

Also too, it would serve Klinsmann right if Ibisevic, who grew up in St. Louis and never got a sniff from the US, were to come off the bench and be the hero for BIH.

As much as I would like a Bosnian upset, that was classic Messi.

@burnspbesq: Ibisevic has been playing for Bosnia since 2007, including qualifiers. Klinsmann has been the US manager since 2011. So unless he has a time machine he can sniff at him all he wants, he’s not gonna get him.

And so, the team with two Manchester City players holds on to beat the team with only one. Truth and justice take it in the shorts.

I’m not sure Ibisevic is a US citizen. I’ve never seen anything definite either way.

(Neven Subotic is a different story. Someone at US Soccer fucked up big-time there.)

Once again, a team with decent counterattacking skills raises its game against a team that focuses on possession. And in this group, it’s Argentina and your-guess-is-as-good-as-mine, and I can see Bosnia-Herz getting through.

@Thlayli: That is generally thought to be Thomas “Wrong Again” Rongen, who chose not to take Subotic to the 2007 U-20 World Championship, after publicly criticizing Subotic for something or other related to playing in Germany
