Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Let’s finish the job.

He really is that stupid.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

This fight is for everything.

Everybody saw this coming.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

T R E 4 5 O N

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Send Kay to Netroots Nation

We’re sending Kay to Netroots Nation since I have a ticket I can transfer to her and she will actually go to the meetings and report coherently on them. Right now, we just need a little scratch to pay for food, gas and lodging, so please hit the paypal link.

When the specific panels become available, please peruse them and maybe we can convince Kay to hit one that a lot of us are interested in and would her to attend.

I ain’t got any extra scratch, sorry, but I wish her a great trip.

Also, happy Father’s Day to all you dads. We are getting my father some help for Father’s Day; the old folks’ service called him and in the next two weeks will send someone out to appraise the situation. Endless gratitude to everyone who offered suggestions.

Not sure whether I did it right. I appear to have bought one item of John G. Cole. Is that, like, some kind of free gift that we get for a contribution?

And, if this is really a full service blog, shouldn’t we have both coherent and incoherent reports?
So Cole has to attend too.

And the commenters standing by in case an emergency care package of, I dunno, say pants, were needed, that would improve reader engagement.

Why are they having this in Detroit? Is it because hardly anybody can afford to drive there, so traffic will be light?

Wonderful news. Kay is a great writer, full of insight. And if she’s willing to go, lucky us.

There is a “note to seller” link to click on PayPay. You can identify your contribution as “For Kay to go to Netroots”, should you so choose.

Oops — that’s also the weekend of Detcon 1, the Detroit ‘national’ SF convention for fans who can’t make it to the WorldCon in London this year!

Not that I was planning on attending either event, but will it complicate the hotel / attendance situation?

Or maybe some people will consider it a twofer?

I would love to contribute to this cause, but I had a couple of bad experiences with PayPal a few years ago and will not put myself through yet another registration. What alternatives are there? I can send a check (yes, an actual hand-written paper check mailed in an envelope with a stamp on it), or if there is an option to use Visa or even the Amazon account, I’m good with that. But no PP, sorry.

Regardless (to borrow a recently-prominent word), I can’t think of anybody better suited to attend and participate in Netroots. Kay is one of your most brilliant finds, John Cole.

@Dee Loralei: It was a pleasure meeting you too, Dee Loralei! along with the other folks there. I’m kind of a hermit by nature, so it takes a bit for me to work up going to even such an informal event as that. I’m glad I followed through for a change; it was a nice evening.

By the way, did the meet-up on Thursday ever happen? I saw some comments alluding to it, but don’t recall any post-meetup reports.

@Anne Laurie: It wasn’t that I didn’t think you were right or didn’t trust your judgement, because I did and added her. It’s that I think we had just promoted several other front page posters, and I guess I am still a conservative at heart and believe in slow, sustainable growth. Let people adapt to the new writers, then introduce someone else when someone else stops posting. It was the same thing with Sooner. You were telling me to add him, but I was resisting because I think a new poster more than every 6 months is too much.

I have no facts or scientific data to back up my gut instincts, I just think that too many rapid changes can have an odd impact on a community. FWIW- I am doing everything I can to get Adam Silverman to be a front page poster. His Iraq post was the most informative thing I have seen on the internet. Speaking of, I am going to go email him and ask him to update because things are moving quickly, and other than Juan Cole, Silverman is one of the few whose analyses I trust.
