    I think we’re getting the feel of things. It’s hard to play in these conditions. Everything takes more strength, you’re much slower because you get no grip and you’re hauling around several pounds of water, the ball is sluggish, you have to adjust everything a little bit. I think the US is just slow to get going (30 second goal notwithstanding). If we can put some offense out there and get some possession time, that should pull Germany back a little bit.

    At least 3 goals need to be scored for us to not advance (Ghana up 2-1, Germany up 1-0). That would put us and Ghana on equal goal differential, and put them ahead on goals 5-4. If Portugal wins 1-0, we’d need to lose to Germany by 5 goals.

    @Calouste:

    I’d think one of the first things on the gentlemen’s agreement would be to avoid any yellow or red cards. They haven’t particularly succeeded at that.

    There’s like a 0% chance that there was a gentlemen’s agreement. The issue is that both teams benefit from playing conservatively so the number of good scoring chances should be low.

    So Portugal is the only team to win the game after playing in Manaus.

    What a wonderful sport. One game you are desperately hoping for a tie and then 30 minutes later are crushed when that is the final result. Next game, a 1-0 loss feels like a victory. :)

    That was shit. If soccer is the future of sport, the future is very bleak indeed. They might as well have agreed to the draw because that fake game they just played was more of a disgrace than just honestly admitting the rules are such that you don’t actually have to play to win every game in the World Cup.

    Luckily there is a rugby test match on the DVR for tomorrow. New Zealand and England.

    I can’t do it.

    Their beer is too good.

    Yep. Beer, french fries, and their politics is even more screwed up than ours.

    Oh, I remember back when rugby was fun, before it got management-consulted into homogeneity and tedium.

    just honestly admitting the rules are such that you don’t actually have to play to win every game in the World Cup.

    The Rugby World Cup has a round-robin with bonus points for not losing badly, and pool ties decided by points differential. I’m sure you’ll be moaning about that as well, right?

    Rugby is the Black Keys of sports: not all that fulfilling but it sounds good when you tell people you like it.
