Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Let’s finish the job.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Let there be snark.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

I really should read my own blog.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

He really is that stupid.

Germany v Algeria Round of 16 Open Thread

Time for a little payback for Algeria 32 years in the making?

I lived in Germany for three years and my favorite dish remains Sauerbraten:

2 cups water
1 cup red wine
1 cup cider vinegar
1 lemon, sliced
1/2 large onion, diced
1 clove garlic, diced
10 whole cloves
2 bay leaves
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons salt
1 tablespoon juniper berries, crushed (optional)
1 teaspoon whole peppercorns
1 (4 pound) boneless beef chuck roast
2 cups chopped onions
2 cups chopped carrots
1 cup diced celery
8 gingersnap cookies, crushed

Heat water, red wine, cider vinegar, lemon, 1/2 onion, garlic, cloves, bay leaves, white sugar, salt, juniper berries, and peppercorns in a saucepan over medium heat until sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Allow marinade to cool and pour into a resealable plastic bag. Add beef roast, coat with marinade, squeeze out excess air, and seal bag. Marinate in the refrigerator 2 to 3 days, turning the roast twice a day.
Place onions, carrots, and celery in a slow cooker. Remove roast from marinade and place atop vegetables. Strain marinade and pour 2 1/2 cups over roast; reserve remaining marinade.
Cover and cook roast on Low for 8 hours. Turn slow cooker off. Transfer roast to a cutting board and cover with aluminum foil. Strain cooking liquid into a large bowl and return vegetables to slow cooker to rest.
Heat about 3 cups cooking liquid and gingersnaps in a saucepan over medium-high heat, adding reserved marinade as needed, until gravy is thickened, about 10 minutes.
Slice roast and serve with vegetables and gravy.

I’m not surprised that Algerian food, like Moroccan food has couscous as a staple. This one sounds great:

Saffron and Raisin Couscous with Fresh Mint

Ingredients

2 cups water
½ teaspoon saffron
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups couscous
¼ cup raisins
3 Tablespoons fresh mint, chopped
Procedure

In a saucepan, bring the 2 cups of water to a boil and add the saffron.
Remove from the heat, cover, and let stand for 30 minutes.
Return the pan to the heat, return to a boil, and mix in the olive oil, salt, couscous, and raisins.
Remove from the heat, cover, and let stand for 30 minutes.
Top with the fresh mint.
Makes 8 servings.

Much of how this game goes probably depends on whether Germany take Algeria seriously enough. If they do, they should have enough to beat them. If they don’t, this could get interesting.

Germany has two Muslim players in its starting XI: Mesut Özil and Shkodran Mustafi. Özil has said he is skipping the fast during the World Cup, as he can choose to do. Algeria manager Vahid Halilhodzic was asked at the pre-match news conference which of his players weren’t fasting, and he (very rightly) told the reporter to mind his own business.

    O/T uh-oh.

Three Israeli teenagers who were abducted earlier this month in the West Bank have been found dead.

An Israeli military spokesman said their bodies were found in a pit near the town of Halhul, north of Hebron. Naftali Frenkel and Gilad Shaar, both aged 16, and 19-year-old Eyal Yifrach were last seen at a junction near Hebron as they hitchhiked home. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas was responsible, a claim the Palestinian militant group has denied.

At the start of a meeting of the Israeli security cabinet, Mr Netanyahu said the three were “kidnapped and murdered in cold blood by animals” and promised: “Hamas will pay”.

But Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told the AFP news agency that any action to punish the movement would “open the gates of hell”.

@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name): That’s how I felt about the Costa Rica/Greece game because a Netherlands win promotes domestic tranquility in my home.

That was no miss-kick but an adroit “hockey” deflection. Nice presence of mind to get a heel on a ball that was behind him.

@Amir Khalid: Algeria is clearly suffering from insufficient supplications to the almighty. Bribes might have been useful. Fasting, however, would be de trop under the circumstances.

@Amir Khalid: Dude, if you are holding back from allowing Algeria to score a couple of goals to avoid allegations of favoritism on religious grounds, I will be most disappointed. If you are trying to raise the dramatic tension, well done.

I haven’t been able to watch this game but the stats make it look like Germany has dominated but just wasn’t able to score. Is that an accurate assessment?

@Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN): I’m not very knowledgeable but Algeria really fought hard and had a lot of opportunities but just didn’t get the goal. Germany didn’t play all that well at times, but did better toward the end.

    @Anoniminous:
The reason people are sensitive to “the Ukraine” is because Russia refused to recognize Ukraine as a country and instead refered to the as merely a province of Russia, the Ukraine. If the US took over Canada and pretended it was always just part of the nation and refered to it as “the Canada” they might be a bit particular about it also.
