Mayhem with lots of CGI? Haven’t watched the vid.
Botsplainer
At loose ends. Due to the LaGuardia shutdown (Hurricane Arthur), our flights got canceled tonight, so we can’t make Mrs Botsplainer’s family reunion in Western Connecticut.
She’s pretty bummed-we suffered Sandy when on vacation in Jamaica – it wrecked the whole week. She’s had a couple of trips to Australia get screwed up due to cyclones, and now this.
We travel a lot. In 25 years, we haven’t had anything close to this weather misery.

Nice fireworks display cut short by Lightning here. From our porch you could see 3 different towns blowing off stuff right until the storm sit out down.
Helen
@Botsplainer: LaGuardia is shut down? I told you all to look out your windows.

The Beach Boys looked old, but Keith Lockhart had the worst hair cut of any major American conductor. 1812 overture cancelled due to lightning storm. A fun night

Absolutely. I saw this yesterday, and was impressed by how it wasn’t really trashing Michael Bay or a bunch of explosion jokes. It was a real analysis of his style over the year and what influenced it. The part about how Battleship was a poor imitation of Bayhem was really interesting, too.
JPL
@some guy: fyi.. the beach boys are old.
srv
John, you should take a film history class. Lots of fascinating stuff.

@JPL:
Relevant.

I’ve watched Gregg Allman sing a song he’s sung 100s of times, and do it like it’s the first time.
The Beach Boys are kind of the opposite of that, esp. Mike Love. Blech….
JPL
@srv: That was definitely better than I could say it.
Montysano
Re Bayhem: ending the video with a classic Coen Bros. scene was a subtle knife slipped between the ribs.
Joel
@some guy: also relevant

11.5 hr day after a week of 9-10 days. My workload keeps expanding & I still don’t know exactly what I should say I do. Plus I brought home a big sack of paperwork for my days off.

I own like 300 DVDs, I watched Lost In Translation Yesterday .Watched it again Then again. Putting it back in. I thought to myself I will make my parents watch.
Violet
@Tommy: I love that film. Love it. One of my favorites.
Anyone else looking forward to seeing the documentary about Roger Ebert: “Life Itself”? Getting very good reviews.
David Koch
@Tommy:
Isn’t that against the Geneva Convention?
The Dangerman
If you are Netflixer and could use a little chilling, Zen time, check out “Mile Mile And A Half”. Most excellent photography/videography.

@some guy: They’re aware that it’s July 3, right?

that is really interesting. nice to see somebody going beyond “it sucks” to actually explain why.

@some guy:
Does anyone remember when the John Bircher’s used to pitch fits over the 1812 Overture because it was written by a Commie Rooskie?
That was back when almost everything they proposed was laughed out of the room.
Now whatever the lunatic rightwingers rants gets concerned nods from Mara Liason and the rest of the media shitheels.
Little Boots
@GregB:
they are back with a vengeance.
it would be nice if everyone could simply start referring to the teabaggers as the birchers, but i suspect it will not happen.
Little Boots
you people cannot let me kill this thread.
John will be very angry.
Helen
@Little Boots: Um Hi? I’m awake too
BethanyAnne
Missed opportunity, should have been Baykkake.
Helen
@Little Boots: You’re the guy who is in love with Omnes, right?
Little Boots
@Helen:
well, love is an exaggeration, but a bit obsessed.

Speaking of Bay, I saw Transformers this past weekend and it was exactly what I expected and much worse. I love me some rock ’em sock ’em action flicks, hell it doesn’t even need a plot, just some ‘plosins, maybe a car chase or two, and if possible for hand to hand combat or ballet-like assault rifle shooting (ala Chow Yun Fat), but mahn, this one was overbloated and way too long and was basically 2 movies in one.
Be forewarned, it is 2hr and 45min longs (add to the 15 min for previews and its 3hours long!!!). Unlike some, I find Mark Walhberg to be one of the most boring actors ever. I can honestly name maybe 3 films of his that I liked (and most probably involved a partner who upped his game), but my lil sister just HAD to see this movie.
Add to that the “hot chick” wasn’t in the same league as Megan Fox or the last blond chick, and the character of the “hot guy boyfriend” was obnoxious and fuck and I never thought I’d say this, but so damn disrespectufl to Mark Walhberg’s character as times, that swear fo’ God, I was missing Shia Lebeouf.
The only saving grace for me was Stanley Tucci, who like Meryl Streep, can chew up some scenery like nobody’s bidness.
Ugh, all in all. Once again I found myself wanting to walk out of a Mark Walhberg movie before it even ended (have you seen Max Payne!).
Little Boots
and incidentally, helen, where is omnes?
Helen
@Little Boots: Dunno It’s not my turn to watch him.
Little Boots
@Helen:
well it’s somebody’s, and he’s gone. just gone.
on the other hand, michael bay, annoying.

@Little Boots: I think I saw him in the SCOTIS thread. Is he a lawyer?
Michael Bay is annoying? Well I have no clue who he is. Sounds like an Aussie. So – I win?
Little Boots
oh, another sleepy site.
there was a time, oh, never mind.
Little Boots
@Helen:
he is a lawyer. a damned lawyer. it’s true.
JCJ
Just got home from seeing Rise Against at Summerfest in Milwaukee. They were great as always.
BethanyAnne
@lamh36: Only thing I remember loving that had Mark Wahlberg was “I Heart Huckabees”.
Amir Khalid
Ah, Michael Bay. The auteur of big, loud, and stupid cinema. I saw the second Transformers movie, and I don’t feel the need to see any more. And 2012. For all the destruction, you can’t help but realise how small people were thinking 3,000 years ago when they dreamed up the end-of-the-world scenarios that wound up in Scripture. All you have on a galactic scale, never mind that of the entire cosmos, is a minor oopsie on a speck of dust in the middle of nowhere.
Little Boots
@Amir Khalid:
the special effects were a bit, meh.
Anne Laurie
@ruemara:
Well, it sounds like you need to rehearse explaining that you can’t work these many hours on a regular basis, no matter how much you love the job or need it, so you need either more flexible deadlines or an assistant. Or, if this is just “temporary”, a guaranteed financial bonus suitable to the hours you’re taking off your own lifespan. Which is, I know, hideously hard to say (that’s why you rehearse in advance, possibly with a friend standing in for your boss if you have someone you trust like that). Because when you don’t use your words, your boss can — honestly or not — say they had no idea and if only you’d said something when you drop over dead from the stress… or run away screaming in the middle of yet another Very Serious Deadline.
Easier typed than done, I know, but that’s the hell of having to work for money!
Anne Laurie
@⚽️ Martin:
While you Left Coasters are preoccupied with your wildfires, the threat of Hurricane Arthur made a lot of Northeastern towns reschedule their Independence Day fireworks to the Third or the Fifth. The nationally-televised Boston Pops celebration, for instance, was hastily moved forward to Wednesday (and I hear it still got cut short, because of an entirely separate wave of thunderstorms).
Amir Khalid
@Little Boots:
And the characters were cardboard cutouts, and the plot was all bullshit coincidences, and the science was straight out of low-budget 1950s “sci-fi” schlock. 2012 is a feast of cheesiness, or of cheesy goodness if you like that sort of thing.
⚽️ Martin
@Anne Laurie: Ah, right. Well planned Right Coasters. I retract my snark.
NotMax
@Amir Khalid
So it’s ‘Less than meets the eye?’

@lamh36:
The only movie I kinda liked Mark Wahlberg in was Ted, and I was pretty shocked I liked Ted in the first place.
Applejinx
That video was a flat-out masterpiece of analysis. Bravo :)
HeartlandLiberal
I tried to watch the first Transformers movie. Really. I did. But I failed. After 20 minutes, I could sense that I might be suffering brain damage from the totally meaningless plot, the lack of coherent narrative, and the total triumph of CGI violence and constant motion over anything resembling human beings interacting in in sort of real environment.
So I popped the DVD and have refused to watch any Michael Bay movies.
As for Mark Wahlberg, I have to admit that one of my favorite movies is “Shooter”. Believable action AND plot AND characters you can identify with and care about.
And one of the greatest conspiracy theory references in movie history:

Michael Bay will have a lot to answer for when he arrives at the pearly gates of directors’ heaven.
Just looked up his oeuvre on IMDB. Ugh. Maybe Bad Boys and The Rock were not too bad, but after that it’s all downhill: Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Island, culminating in the middle-school shlockfest of the Transformers franchise.
@HeartlandLiberal:
Shooter is a great little movie. Really tight. The other Wahlberg semi-B-movie I like is Four Brothers.
Chris
Michael Bay movies are mostly shitty, but I find The Rock to be a minor masterpiece.
Yatsuno
@Amir Khalid: Why for you hate the lens flare?
Steeplejack
@Amir Khalid:
The awfulness that is 2012, while Baysian in scope, should be laid at the door of Roland Emmerich.

Ok, I know this is really late in this thread, but is there no love for Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights? I wanted to put his head in my lap like Julianne Moore did.
Also, I am trying to watch 1776 on TCM but it is mostly boring with a few funny parts.
